No good deed goes unpunished these days–Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington have filed a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee in response to Senator John McCain’s robocalls that targeted several Senators, including Michael Bennet.
CREW filed the complaint against McCain for using NRSC (National Republican Senatorial Committee) funds to make robocalls in 5 states. The robocalls, aimed at Unaffiliated voters, targeted Democratic Senators and specifically urged passage of McCain’s motion.
According to CREW, that’s a big no no. CREW cites Senate Rule 38, which states:
prohibits senators from maintaining “unofficial office accounts,” meaning they cannot use private donations to support official senate activities and expenses.
What is the NRSC’s response to the complaint? Their current defense against the complaint is that CREW is in the pocket of the DSCC. Good luck with that.
