Romanoff Press Conference

  • by: donscottknox

(Reasonable analysis screams “he’s out,” which would be an intelligent decision at this point, but we’ll have to wait and see – promoted by Colorado Pols)

TUESDAY POLS UPDATE: According to multiple sources, Andrew Romanoff will announce that he is ‘recommitting’ to the U.S. Senate race–we suppose that’s the thing to do, since people were starting to wonder. But if you’re questioning whether or not calling a press conference to announce “I’m still in the race!” ultimately does more harm than good, you’re not alone.

He’s still in? He’s out? He’s running for governor?

Elected to four terms in the state Legislature, Andrew Romanoff was the Speaker of the House from 2005 to 2009. He led the Democrats to their first back-to-back majorities in more than 40 years. 1. I asked John Schroyer, Romanoff’s spokesman, if he was staying in the race, and got this reponse: “All I can tell you right now is that Andrew plans to talk about his campaign.”

            1. I’m guessing the news here is huge. Why else hold a press conference on the same day as the biggest news in the political arena is occurring?

                    1. 4Q dollars, which will either be a monster number (north of $1.5mm) which would be newsworthy or he will test some messaging about why money isn’t that important.

And would the denver media really be po’d to have to cover a Senate race?

                    2. will be sufficient news. He doesn’t have to beat Bennet this quarter, but if he puts up serious totals, that’s a big deal.

It’s more problematic if he announces he banked $300-500,000, which is what I’d predict. That raises Don Knox’ question, and Romanoff probably has an answer for that: It’s plenty to get to the caucuses, and once he comes out on top there, more money comes his way. In addition to that, the lesson of the MA Senate race is that the actual candidate Democrats run matters, and that all the party machinery and big bucks in the world don’t get you across the finish line if voters don’t like you.

                    3. then I’ll buy it.

the lesson of the MA Senate race is that the actual candidate Democrats run matters, and that all the party machinery and big bucks in the world don’t get you across the finish line if voters don’t like you.

Absolutely.  It’s not to say that AR comes out over MB on that, but it is to say many of us haven’t had the chance to judge that question yet.

          1. Everything is good news for Republicans. The 2006 electoral defeats were very good news, because it meant they’d have a fighting chance at winning again at some point in the future.

Republican Calvinball is easy to learn but hard to master.

      1. but to roll his withdrawal into the difficulty Democrats will have at the polls this year, whether Brown is squeaking one out or not.

Of course, the reverse possibility is true too. “The MA Senate race underlines how important it is Democrats put forth their best candidates.” But either way, whatever he says won’t be the biggest political story of the day because of his timing.

    2. Odd timing is Romanoff’s specialty. Remember, this is the guy who let his primary opponent raise $3 million and campaign for 9 months before he jumped into the Senate race.

        1. I must be going crazy if I were to think that number would be anywhere near the truth…

…and thanks for being so chivalrous in not just calling me absolutely nuts.

    1. Which is beyond odd for timing since absolutely no one is going to care about anything tomorrow except the race in MA.

And when is the last time anybody has called a press conference to announce his endorsement of somebody? I would imagine most Democrats assume, as do I, that if Romanoff isn’t running for governor, then he supports the candidate that is. I’m pretty sure we don’t need a press conference at noon to confirm the obvious. That just seems a desperate cry for attention and Romanoff, despite some of his supporters here, is a much better politician and diplomat than that.

              1. There would be some seriously pissed-off reporters if that’s what the presser is about.

But, as we know from Bob Moore’s posts above, it’s about his own Senate campaign, so we’ll just have to see.

                1. Shroyer said Andrew plans to talk about his campaign; he didn’t say he’ll be talking about his Senate campaign.  Maybe he’s jumping into the gubernatorial race … or Denver mayoral race … or challenging DeGette….

  1. The only things I can think of this big are:

    1. Withdrawing (or changing races).

    2. A MAJOR endorsement (Hickenlooper, Ritter, or Obama) – and that’s not happening.

    3. A MAJOR policy change (like he’s going to endorse TABOR).

    4. ???

    – dave

        1. …that the sequence of events could unfold not that they would necessarily all unfold/be announced at tomorrow’s press conference.

Consider the broad support that Romanoff enjoys and that the Dems would be complete idiots to let his talents continue to be lost in limbo.

  2. and nobody showed up.

I don’t think there is any news to report.  Endorsing Hickenlooper is not exactly news.  Nor is a statement that he’s still in the Senate race and he raised a pathetically small amount of money in the fourth quarter.

So, now he’s going to piss off the news media by dragging them in for nothing.  Brilliant.

  3. To call a press conference to say, “I am still in the race” would be so lame, I don’t think he would even consider it.

As much as he is qualified, he would be the wrong pick for Lt. Gov. Two liberal 40-50ish white guys from Denver with long names does not make a balanced team. Hickenlooper is smarter than that.

Does he have a plan to use his media fame to help the innocent people of Haiti? Naaaaah! (I hope he proves me wrong.)

Does he have a new federal appointment? (Are there any even left?) Are they creating a new one for him to help with Haiti?

I suspect he will be endorsing John Hickenlooper for Governor, for sure, but what else? Maybe putting a positive spin on his fundraising, whatever it may be, before someone else spins it? I don’t know — just some guesses.

    1. Although, to be fair, Romanoff supposedly had a very different press conference planned for last Monday than what occurred, and changed his mind. So anything could happen.

  4. http://blogs.denverpost.com/th

Jessica Fender reports at The Spot:

“He is not pulling out of the Senate race,” said spokesman John Schroyer. “Andrew will be discussing various aspects of the Senate race, and he will more clearly define the differences between he and Sen. (Michael) Bennet.

    1. … not to run for Gov?

If it becomes apparent after the caucus that he will struggle to be viable without much bigger fundraising, will he accept PAC/corp money like he did when he was State Rep?

Jane Norton has said we should eliminate the Dept of Ed – why shouldn’t we?

Jane Norton has said she opposes cap & trade – because it’s bad for America. Is she right?

          1. As many comments about the neighborhood and the logistics of the “live” feed as the actual event.

I’ve seen the neighborhood and I don’t care that curtis saw U2 once not far from there. Not unless AR was with him

              1. were streaming it “live”

At that link curtisahubbard was apparently attempting to live blog the event.

                2:36

curtisahubbard: AR: History has handed jus an opp to make meaningful and lasting progress on a host of issues

                2:40

curtisahubbard: AR: To make the most of this opp we need bold leadership not only in WH but also at the other end of PA Ave. That is why I’m running for sen

                2:40

curtisahubbard: AR closer: The spec. interests have enough politicians on their payroll. We need a Senator for the rest of us.

                  1. I wasn’t there, but as near as I can tell: it started late, AR endorsed Hick, and made a couple of comments.

Why did he have it?  Was he going to say something else but changed his mind?

                    Why no Q&A?

                    Why just AR supporters?

As earned media, it was weak.

As a campaign event it wasn’t.

I mean at the least he could have reminded everyone today is the registration deadline for caucus, asked for support and donations, and said something about Norton.  Apparently the non-campaign continues to not campaign.

                    1. Which is where I went looking for the text of his remarks.

                      They weren’t there.

And his blog hasn’t been updated in nearly two weeks.

                    2. This is getting painful to watch. I used to think that I wished Romanoff had been appointed Senator but that since he wasn’t and as things are now, we should stick with Bennet. Now, I’m glad I didn’t get my wish.  Andrew Romanoff is nowhere near ready to play in the big leagues. He’s making Bennet look more statesmanlike and senatorial by comparison every day. Somebody should arrange an intervention for the poor guy.

                    3. didn’t include anything substantive beyond AR endorsed Hick.

No quotes, no Q&A, no analysis

  5. Andrew Romanoff forgot how to campaign.

    – Dumb reason for a “press conference”.

    – Picked the worst day to get media coverage.

    – Still no message.

How could anyone actually think he could pull off an election win against Jane Norton with campaign advisers this bad? Even high school class presidents would do better.

Andrew Romanoff is a great guy, motivated by a sincere desire to help people. His supporters believe in him, and are decent, honorable people (for the most part).  His judgment in all decisions related to his campaign suggests he doesn’t really want to win this race.

Like I said before, I can’t watch this political train-wreck.
