What you can do to fight back this week (December 9)

Colorado has a Nazi problem.

Hate crimes in Colorado are on the rise. [1] Just a few weeks ago, a white supremacist was arrested in Pueblo while plotting to blow up a local synagogue. [2] One of the leaders of the modern neo-Nazi movement was recently discovered to be living in subsidized housing in Denver while spreading his ideology of violent hatred. [3]

And then last week we learned that Kirk Widlund, a producer at Denver conservative talk radio station 710 KNUS, allegedly maintains an online double life as a devout neo-Nazi who idolizes Hitler and says America fought on the wrong side in the Second World War. [4] [5] The realization that our local right wing talk radio harbors unapologetic neo-Nazis is deeply troubling, but unfortunately not surprising. We can’t deny anymore that fascism is alive in our political culture once again, and we cannot let avowed Nazis and racist hatred in Colorado go unanswered.

Since Widlund’s exposure last week, the hosts and management at 710 KNUS have been completely silent. It’s time for you to get involved. Call 710 KNUS right now at (303) 750-5687, or if you prefer their on-air line at (303) 696-1971, and tell them their employee Kirk Widlund’s neo-Nazi ideology is an affront to Colorado’s values. American politics may be a marketplace of competing ideas, but there is no room in our politics for actual Nazis.

Thanks for standing up to hate and demanding better from our local media. Here are more ways to make a difference for the week of December 9:

San Juan Citizens Alliance: AQCC Methane Public Hearing

The Colorado Air Quality Control Commission (AQCC) is holding a Durango hearing on strengthening methane regulations from the oil and gas industry. Strong new rules are vital in order to reduce emissions, protect our health, and curb climate impacts. Five years ago, Colorado became the first state to directly regulate methane pollution – an extremely potent greenhouse gas – from the oil and natural gas industry. Since the rules were adopted, Colorado’s economic growth has exceeded projections, proving that smart environmental policy can go hand-in-hand with economic prosperity. But the old rules aren’t enough- Colorado needs new protections that reduce emissions to safeguard our health and our environment.

Where: 1101 E 2nd Ave Room E103, Durango
When: Wednesday, December 11 at 6:00pm

Museo de las Americas is wheel-chair accessible, and some seating will be provided. Free parking available in the back of the venue, and metered parking is free after 6 p.m.

Sincerely,

Alan Franklin
