Poll: Quo Vadius Maes?

  • by: dwyer

Tuesday is the day the Secretary of State prints the November ballots. If Maes is still on the ticket, it will be too late to replace him with a more “acceptable to the Powers that be” candidate.

Will Maes be on the ballot on Wednesday, August 25th?

  1. The SoS doesn’t print the ballots, the Counties do.  The SoS certifies the ballots so Counties can print them.

Also, Maes can drop out after the certification date, but his name, not his replacement’s name, will appear on the ballot.  In practice, that would be a mess, advertising would have to convince people that a vote for Maes is really a vote for someone else.  But Tuesday is NOT the last day to replace him.  It’s only the last day for someone else’s name to show up on the ballot for sure.

Vacancies are covered in CRS 1-4-1002.  There’s some interesting stuff in there, like if the vacancy occurs less than 18 days before the election and the vacant position wins, a party can fill the vacancy AFTER the election.

    Here’s a link to Title I.

which shows that 3 September is the last day for the Secretary of State to send notice and certification of the General Election ballot to the county clerks. (No later than 57 days before the General Election).

With the Dems looking to replace Hickenlooper, the Dem SOS will not certify until that’s been sorted out.
