Crank Cries Foul on Weird Mail Piece

by: Colorado Pols

Tue Jul 18, 2006 at 14:26:49 PM MDT

The Christian Coalition of Colorado is paying for direct mail that attacks two Republican candidates for congress in CD-5: Jeff Crank and Lionel Rivera.

The mail piece in question (CLICK HERE - PDF) seeks to show that both Crank and Rivera are sympathetic to gay rights, but it does so in a pretty bold way. It also does it in a pretty inaccurate way, claiming that Crank endorsed "known homosexual activist" Richard Skorman for the Colorado Springs City Council. The piece points to a 2003 article in the Colorado Springs Independent as proof, although nowhere in the story does it say that Crank endorsed anybody - so, nevermind the doctored headline reading "Crank Endorses Skorman."

Advertisements done to benefit the campaign of Doug Lamborn by attacking his opponents have already drawn enough criticism to get them pulled from the air. Apparently misleading ads aren't limited to the radio.

Congressman Lamborn
This piece with hurt Crank worse then it hurts Rivera, since everyone already knows Lionel's a lib.  It's going to eye opening for them to learn that Crank is a lib too.

Also:  am still waiting for real proof that Club for Growth radio ads were actually pulled.  No, wild accusations on this website and Crank Press releases aren't proof of anything.

weird
weird indeed.

What I don't like is how Colopols seems to publish every press release Crank can come up with. Crank loves the free PR, and it annoys me when a website is so eager to capitulate.

If Crank doesn't like other people making claims about him, then he shouldn't be in politics. He should go back to radio where he can control all the content the public gets.

Blah, blah, blah
Seriously - do a search for diaries on the right, and see how often a press release shows up for another candidate, like Lamborn. We publish most of the press releases we receive from ANY candidate (even Paul Fiorino).

[ Parent ]
hmmm
Then perhaps my beef is with the overzealous press release author they employ.

[ Parent ]
from what I can see
Going as far back on the main page as I can, I found 5 Crank originated posts, 1 Lamborn, 0 from other candidates and 3 "neutral" posts.

[ Parent ]
Okay, please try again
Under SEARCH (under the KGNU ad), choose 'Diaries.' Then, do a search for Lamborn. There was a Lamborn press release about a week ago.

[ Parent ]
We don't get a lot of releases
from Bremer or Rayburn. It's not that we don't post them - we don't get them.

[ Parent ]
Step aside, Captain
ENOUGH RUMOR-MONGERING ABOUT CLUB FOR GROWTH!

They support Lamborn and I'm sick and tired of you lefties perpetuating these stories that they've backed off their support of our next Congressman.

Run along, Captain. Your hero Howard Dean is giving a speech on CSPAN--go watch that.

[ Parent ]
missed point
I think you missed my point about the Club for Growth ads.  Pols needs to stop printing that they got pulled unless there is REAL proof (not just a Crank Press Release) that those ads got pulled.

Lamborn is going to win and be a strong champion of conservatism in the House of Representatives.

[ Parent ]
No defense, just facts
To insult Captain as a lefty-liberal shows your complete ignorance, since he was just bolstering his support for Marilyn Musgraves Marriage Amendment on the other thread.

I know Republicans are smarter than that, so you must be just some religioso-conservative.

By the way, the "Christian Coalition" is a laughable organization.

"Still waiting for proof the ads were pulled."
Ummmmm, I HAVE AN IDEA... turn on your radio. The day the Jeff Crank campaign SAID the ads were pulled was COINCIDENTALLY the day we stopped hearing the ads. Also, have you called the station? How about Club for Growth? OH - ONE OTHER THING... the Colorado Club for Growth President has publicly disavowed the ad campaign that the national group is running. Harumph! LOL

[ Parent ]
You might be a wingnut...
... if you think the guy who made this statement is a liberal:

"Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera said it was time to end the minimum wage and 'let the market drive what the prevailing wage should be.' "

To quote cap'n amerika, "No, wild accusations on this website ... aren't proof of anything." Too true, cap'n. Too true.

[ Parent ]
Please leave liberal shills
Perhaps you shills should be working on more productive tactics for your candidates.

Lamborn is going to win this race and there's NOTHING you can do about it.

It just burns you up that the voters won't buy your liberal nonsense.

Wrong again
Umm...I think this is a democracy and the one thing we can all do to make sure Lamborn doesn't win, is not vote for him (if he makes it out of the primary).

You totalitarian types are rather freaky.

Hate mongering
So let me get this strait. The conservative candidates are trying to prove that they hate gays more than the other guy?

I took a look at the mailer, YUCK!  Lamborn is obviously willing to sink to new levels and will gleefully tear up the El Paso Republican Party to do it.

Gay marriage and homosexual rights.  Wow.  And you all wonder why you are loosing ground here in Colorado?  Because NOBODY CARES.  Start addressing some real issues.  Stay out of peoples personal lives AND thier bedrooms (sick and perverted as it is) and get a life!

wrong druid
First of all, Lamborn didn't send this mailer, the Christian Coalition (CC) did, so get your facts straight Druid.

Secondly, a vast majority of Republicans in El Paso County support traditional family values, not the preversions of a few degenerates.

This CC mailing will hurt Jeff Crank and Lionel Rivera with conservatives and Republicans in the 5th CD.

Protecting the family is an important part of conservative governance.

[ Parent ]
"not the preversions of a few degenerates"
Wow, guess we all know exactly where you're coming from. Good to know that Christian values including "judge not, lest ye be judged" and "love thy neighbor as thyself," only apply to heterosexuals. You might try reading the New Testament, just for a nice change of pace.

Do you speak only for yourself or for Lamborn and Musgrave, too?

preview of coming attractions
In CD7 all three candidates Perlmutter, Lamm and Rubenstein clearly and unequivoccally at a public debate stated there support for not just civil unions but for the rights of Gay Americans to marry. Voters in CD 7 will be seeing a lot of this garbage.

[ Parent ]
In that case...
Since Lamborn didn't send this, he should publicly denounce the mailer. Wait, that's the principled, American thing to do. I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

Hey Cap'n Merica
Hey Cap'n, although Lamborn did'nt send this little turd out from his office, he might as well have. Hotaling's brother is the CCC man, is he not?  Nonetheless, it makes me cringe that this diabolical POS would even have the word Christian anywhere on it. I'd rather be associated with a tree hugging druid any day, than any of these little nazis.

[ Parent ]
This just made my day
DISCLAIMER: I SUPPORT LAMBORN.

But I love this stuff. A priceless hit piece against weak opponents that is sure to move numbers.

I have to wonder if the "wonder kid" Banks and his candidate Crank had any idea this was coming down the track.

Banks probably sat down with his candidate, worked through possible weaknesses, but no doubt this just fell through the cracks and he was totally hit unaware.  Crank - Cracks.

Can Crank and Rivera return the fire? I doubt it. With Lamborn out-raising them both, I imagine the two are worried about cash flow for the next few weeks.

It's gonna backfire and then someone's gonna get burned
Jeff Crank must love this stuff. As has been reported, this is an easily discredited piece (i.e. no such headline exists). The more that Lamborn and Hotaling use strategy like this the more Lamborn's poll numbers shrink. Umm, this isn't Chicago or Atlanta and the conservative greater Colorado Springs area hates the mudslinging. Lamborn is giving this away... LOL... the BEST thing Lamborn could do for his numbers right now would be to fire Hotaling the Barbarian and disavow dirty campaigning. HAHA... like THAT would ever happen!

The Rocky
Is the Rocky against Jeff Crank?  I have to assume they took that quote out of context this morning.  No serious candidate could say something like that.

"We need to get rid of the IRS," said candidate Jeff Crank. "We've got to allow people in the free market to make choices, choose whether they want to pay taxes."

[ Parent ]
Jon Hotaling is a God to Me
Hotaling the Barbarian? I kinda of like the sound of that... visions of scorched earth and all...

Perhaps we can compare this to Sherman's March to the Sea...  Hotaling and Lamborn's March to Victory...

Campaigns aren't for the weak of spirit.  Hotaling is runnign a solid campaign, and is catching flack simply because he and Doug are holding the other candidates accountable for their past actions.

Mark my words. Doug will win.

Crank vs. Crank
Jeff Crank has fallen prey to the Hefley God's.  The same guy who campaigned in 1986 on a pro-term limits platform, only to recant and run for the hills when it was introduced in Congress in 1994.  The mere fact that Crank personally didn't fight against C & D hurts his credibility.  Even if he was against them.

C & D aside, how many local tax increases during his tenure at the Chamber did Jeff Crank advocate for?  Mor than you can imagine.  Afterall, do you honestly believe that the Chamber would keep him on board if he was always spouting off against their platforms?  Don't think so.

As for the property taxes?  Jeff Crank appeared on the radio show, "On the Carpet" with Chuck Baker in support of the propety tax increase for the jail and court house.  He was there with Terry Maketa.  Needless to say, the tax proposal failed miserably.  But Mr. Crank was there.

Jeff Crank may not support the homosexual lifestyle, but he didn't advocate against putting Skorman in office as a city council member.  Skorman is very pro-homosexual.

Someone once said, "It is not only that which we do, true, but also that which we do not do for which we are accountable."  The fact that Mr. Crank didn't take a moral and ethical stand, that he favored paycheck over principle tells us what he'll do in Washington.

Just as Hefley went native, so too will Mr. Crank.

Don't take this sooooooooo personal.  After all, its nothing to get Cranked Up about!!!!  I mean I may be a little Cranky once in awhile, but this Crankiness has my head spinning.  Count me as someone who just "Isn't Hooked On Crank."

Once again, my inquiries go unanswered...Will someone from the Crank Camp please, please, please, please, cite one piece of legislation, one bill, one amendment, one memo, one position paper that Mr. Crank ever lobied on behalf of in Washinton that was a bill either Sponsored, Co-Sponsored, or an Amendment by Mr. Hefley that dealt with any pro-family, pro-social, pro-life legislation?  surely, these strong conservative Republicans can find something somewhere?????  To date, the hallowed halls of Washington reply with hallowed, empty replies.

Mud
Come on Lamborn, no one really believes this.  I used to like Lamborn, but I am starting to think he is just a liar who will use a conservative platform to win.  Crank has his shortcomings, but this is WAY over the top.  I prefer an annointed son to a liar who is supposed to be a conservative.

Crank on the Air
By the way, isn't it just a little disingenuine for Machelli to be attempting to be somewhat professional and neutral?  The guy has lost any respect I ever had for him.  His radio show has become a daily circus and platform for Jeff Crank.

Note to Citadel Broadcasting:  Good thing the "Fairness Doctrine" isn't in play any longer.  Otherwise you folks would be giving free air-time to Lamborn, Bremer, Rayburn, Anderson, Rivera, and Fawcett. At the current rate, we'll be hearing from those guys past Christmas!

P.S.: If KVOR pulled the adds for Lamborn? Then they need to learn how to do some "INVESTIGATIVE" reporting.  Forget C & D, just look at all the other Chamber endorsed candidates, and tax increases and you'll find where Mr. Crank stood.

Crank on Taxes
Amendment 32- Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce spokesman Jeff Crank says, If it passes, it is still not going to fix the system as it stands - not right away - but it would stop the continuing slide. It's not going to level the playing field; it's only going to keep it from getting worse and worse.

The Colorado Springs Business Journal. Colorado Springs: Oct 24, 2003.  pg. 1

The Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce opposes the measure because it would tax businesses, but Senior Vice President Jeff Crank said the chamber will not campaign against the measure.

Group wants to aid every child/Taxes from Question 1A would support programs for area's disabled population
The Gazette. Colorado Springs, Colo.: Oct 20, 2003.  pg. METRO.1

  Referendum A
Jeff Crank, governmental affairs director for the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, said the city doesn't want to end up in another drought year with restrictions more severe than seen so far. That will happen if we keep doing it the same way we've been doing it. We have to try something different.
The Colorado Springs Business Journal. Colorado Springs: Oct 10, 2003.  pg. 1

City puts hand out for cash/ Mayor wants extra money to go for roads
Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce Vice President Jeff Crank said he thinks businesses would be receptive to the ballot idea as long as they see where the money goes.
The Gazette. Colorado Springs, Colo.: Jun 26, 2003.  pg. A.1
NOTE: Crank and Rivera

Voters judge, jury, executioner for larger jail
The jail questions sought a property tax boost of $1.27 per month on a $200,000 home to build and staff an 850-bed wing at the Criminal Justice Center, 2739 E. Las Vegas St.
The Gazette. Colorado Springs, Colo.: Nov 6, 2002.  pg. A.13

Results:1A: 88,877 voted no; 54,473 voted yes

1B: 89,970 voted no; 52,340 voted yes

My Personal Favorite:
Jeff Crank, a chamber official who led the "Vote yes" effort, didn't blame the defeat on a slumping economy. "It's always hard to pass a tax increase no matter what the reason," he said.

YES Mr. Crank, it is hard to pass a tax increase.  Even when you said you didn't support it!!!

So then the Club for Growth (national) was right???!!! contrary to what Mr. Bill (Miller) Club for Growth says.  Shame on Mr. Bill him should know better!!!

Ande more news;

County drops vote on tax hike, cites full ballot
Jeff Crank, a chamber spokesman, said his group preferred the county's measure over the city's because it shared the proceeds with cities and towns.
The Gazette. Colorado Springs, Colo.: Sep 7, 2001.  pg. METRO.1

Business lobbyists stake out their turf
Should legislators start ignoring the Springs, the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce has lobbyist Jeff Crank to remind them the state doesn't end at Monument Hill
The Gazette. Colorado Springs, Colo.: Dec 11, 2000.  pg. IB.2
