So You Planned That, Did You?

A report from Bente Birkeland of Rocky Mountain Community Radio this week on the utilization of Twitter by politicians and others involved in Colorado politics turns noteworthy at -3:33:

BIRKELAND: In fact, Brophy drove his own news cycle when he Tweeted last month about Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown law student who testified about contraception. Progressives railed against Brophy for Tweeting, quote, “Ms. Fluke, I don’t want to buy your booze, pay for your spring break or your birth control. Call your Dad for that.” Brophy says he doesn’t regret the Tweet, and it actually helped him pick up more Twitter followers.

BROPHY: I rarely post things without thinking about them. I actually tried that line out on a number of people at Republican gatherings, and it was very well received. [Pols emphasis]

So, uh, a couple of visuals present themselves after the revelation that GOP Sen. Greg Brophy planned and rehearsed his Tweet about Sandra Fluke. The first is Brophy practicing delivery of this insult in the mirror, which we are unable to picture without it coming off rather creepy.

The second is Brophy attempting to explain how this is not an act of mind-blowing political foolishness. Given that Republicans’ #1 challenge this year is stopping the bleed-out of suburban women, and the outrage the controversy over Sandra Fluke’s treatment by Republican talking heads like Rush Limbaugh provoked–which Brophy acknowledged by conceding Limbaugh had made a mistake in calling Fluke a “slut”–he proudly admits to rehearsing his own insults? Which helped drive home the Democrats’ “War on Women” meme locally?

If this really was planned, it’s an incalculable gift to Democrats. It’s honestly a gift either way.

  1. I’m so sorry you can’t understand that not everyone thinks like you. Of course this was funny to some people. Do you like every comedian? Of course not.

I think what you really want is for everyone to think exactly alike, or at least never violate your sense of what is acceptable. This is one definition of fascism, which also started with people making jokes…

    1. it’s my turn again.

I think what you really want is for everyone to think exactly alike, or at least never violate your sense of what is acceptable.

This is that Rovian tactic of accusing your opponent of your own worst characteristics and weaknesses…you of the “Incredible Shrinking Tent”.

This is one definition of fascism, which also started with people making jokes…

I am not sure you have that right about your phrase being a “definition” of fascism, but I feel very confident in asserting that fascism was not started by a stand up comic.

      1. with outrageous and unfounded claims that the nation or society is “under attack,” and that the opponents of the people making these claims are in cahoots with these outsiders (see: “immigration reform” and “protect marriage” rhetoric from the right).

          1. So ArapaGOP believes it is okay for employers to tell women employees what health care they are permitted to have. Rush Limbaugh’s 3-day tirade insulting Ms Fluke, has cost the Republican Party a 10pt drop in support from women.

The all-male Catholic Church hierarchy, has zero legal or moral authority over non-Catholic employees. Actually, after decades of hiding sex-offenders and child rapists, I’m not sure the Bishops and Pope actually retain any moral authority over Catholics.

    2. I watched him vote against the Cottage Foods Act when it was in committee because he didn’t think there should be any requirement for labels. This was immediately AFTER he said that his daughter has food allergies. This is a thinking man?

  3. Brophy seemed to say.

He would look much smarter, and make his party look better, had he said, “It was a off the cuff remark.” Instead he tries to rope all Republicans in with his jackass comment.
