Larimer Republican says Friess"may or may not" joke again about birth control at fundraiser

“There may or may not be a joke tonight about birth control,” said Tom Lucero, the master of ceremonies at tonight’s Larimer County GOP fundraiser featuring keynote speaker Foster Friess, who was embroiled in a national controversy after he joked that contraception need not be so expensive because, back in the old days, “The gals put [Bayer Aspirin] between their knees, and it wasn’t that costly.”

Lucero made the comment on KFKA radio’s AM Colorado (at the 36:45 in hour 2), which he hosts weekday mornings.

“I thought it was funny, frankly,” said Lucero, “when he made the joke about birth control in his day and age, and birth control back then was Aspirin. We are going to have a good time tonight.”

Organizers told me last month they had no plans to disinvite keynote speaker Foster Friess, who apologized for the Aspirin joke.

Asked if the flap around Friess had given him second thoughts about inviting Friess to their fundraiser, Larimer County GOP Chair Michael Fassi said, “We’re going to move ahead with Foster Friess.”

Former CU Regent Tom Lucero, who’s the master of ceremonies for the event, told me that Friess’ joke didn’t give him second thoughts about his own involvement in the dinner.

“I think that Foster handled it appropriately,” said Lucero, who’s served as Chair of the Larimer County GOP. “He was trying for a joke, and it fell flat. It wasn’t the appropriate forum for that particular joke, and we moved on.”

On the radio this morning, Lucero said, “My friend Foster Friess graciously accepted the invitation to come to Colorado.”

Lucero called Friess “an amazing man” who started with nothing and eventually sold his business for $400 million.

Innocent off color jokes, or those who turn every joke into a civil rights campaign?

I think Americans can take a joke, personally.

  MILWAUKEE – President Obama has opened the first significant lead of the 2012 campaign in the nation’s dozen top battleground states, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, boosted by a huge shift of women to his side.
  
  In the fifth Swing States survey taken since last fall, Obama leads Republican front-runner Mitt Romney 51%-42% among registered voters just a month after the president had trailed him by two percentage points.
  
  The biggest change came among women under 50. In mid-February, just under half of those voters supported Obama. Now more than six in 10 do while Romney’s support among them has dropped by 14 points, to 30%. The president leads him 2-1 in this group.
  
  Poor Mittens–and he wants it so very badly. So badly, what he said yesterday is irrelevant–bratwursts are his favorite food in WI, in GA its grits. Who knows what’ll it be today…Friday, PA…and its a Philly Cheese Steak!

      We all know ArapaGOP isn’t against the rights of 51 percent of Americans. He’s against the rights of 99 percent of Americans — and not too happy about some of the traitors in the 1 percent, like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

  I think he showed himself to be a thoughtless jerk. Not a civil rights issue, but I don’t want someone like that having any influence on national policy. It showed a total lack of understanding he issue from the woman’s point of view, even back during the 50’s.

    I think it IS a civil rights issue. Women are still treated like second-class citizens all over this country, and the abhorrent legislation that has been presented the last two years shows just how backward the GOP is on women’s issues. We need the ERA and it is shameful we do not have it in the United States.
    
    Also, his words were not a harmless joke — his cluelessness is offensive to every woman I have spoken with. Women are angry, and the more jerks like Friess are insensitive, the more we organize. Guess I should thank him for that.

  In fact, I’d bet there are variations that could be even funnier. Maybe someway to embarrass President Clinton or include a sexual innuendo about political hotties, or a slam on the less hot women in politics.

    The more stuff happens, the less chance the most defining contrast between the two parties won’t be this unexplainable and inexplicable attitude republicans seem to be screaming that they embrace about over half the electorate!
    
    My wife has said she’s overheard multiple conversations among republican female acquaintances and what they’re saying doesn’t paint a pretty picture for the GOP in November.
    
    As in the voting booth.
    
    Santorum’s camp was wise to shut this old fool up after his gaffe on MSNBC.
    
    But why would Larimer County’s reds give the old gasbag another opportunity to bury them?
