Donald “Duck” Dunn.  Man, what can I say.  Consummate session musician-the “bottom” of all of my favorite Stax records.  Played in the famous integrated Stax house band (a real oddity in the 1960s and in Memphis no less).  Booker T and the MGs.  The Blues Brothers.  Contributed to recordings and tours by Bob Dylan, CCR, Tom Petty, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Neil Young, among others.  There’s even a YouTube of him backing up Elvis in the Stax studio.

He was rarely the “hook.”  He was just down there on the bottom on his Precision Bass, solid as a rock.

Chuck Brown.  The District of Columbia’s favorite son and inventor of “go-go” funk–a blend of blues, jazz, latin percussion, hip-hop style vocals, all over a killer funk groove.

Here’s his “go-go” treatment of a jazz standard.  Turn it up.

Donna Summer.  The Queen of Disco.  When the DJ played this song, you knew it was time to decide who you were going home with.

Thought this was a nice local version of my favorite funk. You have to click on it and open the window. Afterward, check out the song on the home page — not funk, but a truly gifted local talent.
