While it was cool that Madness got to open with their US hit, they’re a fun (but safe) ska band.

The real deal – the Specials:

And BTW, what ASSHAT at NBC cut out the Kate Bush performance?

Let’s not get all revisionist here.

…setting the way-back machine for the 80′s, I used to buy every piece of vinyl by Madness from the long-gone Public Image Record store in Bonnie Brae. Their musically manifesto was all about having fun and playing for the thrill of it.

The Specials, on the other hand, were always wading into the controversy of the moment:

but it doesn’t make them more “real.”

…esp someone like me who’s a stupid slobbering fan who still has all of his vinyl from them.

I’m just saying that the Olympics went with the “safe” ska band instead of getting the bands who invented the genre – The Specials, The English Beat, Eek A Mouse, etc….probably because the content of the songs was a bit too political.

My favorite of the English ska-revivalist acts, bringing back the pre-reggae Jamaican sound.

A song like “Gangsters” was incredibly prescient for its look at an emerging police security state.

And The Specials blew The Police off the stage when The Specials opened for The Police at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver.

it’s a great day just to be alive . . . how many more of these are you gonna get?

Like the man says, “don’t let another moment slip away” . . .

. . . maybe learn to play some trombone?
