Record Response Reveals Colorado Investigation Of GOP Voter Registration Firm

Legal, Open Records Requests, Policy, Clean Elections

In response to a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request from Ethics Watch, the Colorado Secretary of State’s office disclosed that a voter registration firm that worked with the Colorado Republican Party is under investigation.

Last week, the Colorado Republican Party terminated its contract with Strategic Allied Consulting after allegations of voter registration fraud by that firm came to light. On October 1, Ethics Watch submitted a CORA request to Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler, asking for all documents reflecting communications between his office and Strategic Allied Consulting, its reported founder, Nathan Sproul, and a related company.

Today, the Secretary of State’s office advised Ethics Watch that access to a responsive document had to be denied due to a pending investigation by the District Attorney’s Office for the 18th Judicial District, which now possesses that document. Colorado’s 18th district includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln Counties. While the nature of the investigation was not specified, the District Attorney generally investigates criminal matters.

This appears to be the first acknowledgment that Strategic Allied Consulting is facing a criminal investigation in Colorado. The firm is reportedly already under investigation in Florida.

This is quite interesting.
