GoVoteColorado.com Plagued By Intermittent Outages (Again)

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE #2: FOX 31’s Eli Stokols:

Many Coloradans attempting to register to vote in the election that is now exactly four weeks away are having a hard time using the Secretary of State’s website, which is apparently overloaded ahead of Tuesday’s midnight registration deadline.

With hundreds, perhaps thousands of Coloradans receiving an error message, the website, govotecolorado.com, now includes an apology note atop the page and a link to a paper registration form that can be downloaded and filled out.

While Democrats don’t trust Secretary of State Scott Gessler and are worried about anything that appears to impede voter registration efforts, Gessler’s spokesman tells FOX31 Denver that the website and the servers backing it up are simply struggling to keep up with demand.

UPDATE: A voter records her failed attempt to register:

Here’s the message you presently see across the top of Go Vote Colorado, the Secretary of State’s official portal for online voter registration and voter information updates:

It’s a polite message acknowledging that the state’s official voter registration website has had intermittent outages for the last several days. We’ve received several reports of the voter registration tool returning an error or simply timing out. We just tested and found it operating–very slowly, though, ten seconds or more per click. It’s worth noting that Secretary of State Scott Gessler has discouraged outside voter registration groups from building their own interfaces to the state’s voter registration system–which may or may not have helped in this case, depending on what part of the system is failing to work correctly.

It’s also worth noting that these “intermittent outages” happened last year.

Near, and on, the deadline for new registrations. Which is today for the 2012 elections.

Our readers can better address this latest question of malice or incompetence.

  1. when folks were just registering for muni elections they should have gotten it fixed. And, they would have gotten it fixed if registering voters was what Gessler saw as important to his job

  2. Maybe this is not clear voter suppression. Maybe he forgot to purchase enough bandwidth for demand on high volume days. In other words, maybe he is just completely incompetent instead of corrupt?

    1. He was either doing this intentionally or unintentionally.

If the former, he’s a criminal at some level.

If the latter, he need to be removed from office for one of those “feasances.”

Either way, he should be gone. In an ideal world.

  3. Thought I’d see if the State showed me as an active voter. I already know the answer–I checked weeks ago through Larimer County Clerk’s website which works beautifully. Tried 3 times on Secretary of State’s website, just as an experiment and ended up on a page that read Java fail script error each time.

Maybe Scott should spend less time making cutesy commercials about registering and more time actually making it possible to do just that. Or in other words, the job taxpayers hired him to do.

  4. Gessler fighting extra hard to keep a budget surplus in his office when the legislature was looking at reallocating it. That may have been in the business division, but it seems like he could use a bit of that cash to maybe do his job effectively.

    1. . . . it seems like he could use a bit of that cash to maybe do his job effectively.

      Assuming:

He knows what his job is . . .

He really wants to do what his job is supposed to be . . .

He’s competent to do what his job is supposed to be . . .

He would that additional cash in a responsible manner . . .

I’ve seen no evidence of any of these, so why should I believe that money would make a difference here, now?  It sure seems Gessler’s had enough money to pursue his pipe dreams and schemes.  Claiming poverty now seems to be just an excuse for his seemingly endless clumsy partisan pursuits since he’s been in office.

On a slightly different note, if cash was the question, then Willard Bit-‘o-cash would be a solution . . .

      1. simple incompetence, since a fat budget goes a long way toward getting the proper resources to do a good job. If Gessler can’t manage in even that environment, it shades more toward negligence even if his motives aren’t entirely corrupt.
