and how does he know Herman Cain?  :)

….to one I see a number of times a week here, “Too bad ignorance isn’t painful.”

Whatever the source, Cain or Leahy, very insightful.

And I don’t mean above the cottonwood outside my window.

Lead headline in Haaretz: US Lawmaker: Syria’s chemical weapons ready to use ‘at a moment’s notice’ http://www.haaretz.com/news/mi… Some money quotes by Republican representative Mike Rogers (emphases mine):

I believe that they have put elements of their chemical weapons program in a condition of which they could be used at a moment’s notice

It would not be unusual for a regime that possesses some fairly sophisticated weapons systems … to use the weapons at its disposal.

So Scuds, and I make the next leap of chemical weapons, I think is of real concern.

The guy’s the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Does it sound like he’s going public with his feelings because committee members are bucking his desire to make a hawkish official committee announcement? I thought they were supposed to keep their cards close to their chests and let State or some “unnamed” White House official make announcements like this.

Be afraid. It would not be unusual for a Republican politician to try to gin up another war for us.

    As usual, free of pain.

they figured out we’d be all done with their day counting, done thru the Julian calendar, and settled on the Gregorian for a real ominous 12.12.12 — who knew?

I am glad to see you quote Haaretz. I read it daily online and it is the most moderate (well circulated) voice in Israel. Reminds me that despite Bibi there are a lot of reasonable thinkers in Israel.

Although Spanish is the official language across most present-day countries of the region, Mayan languages are still spoken as a primary or secondary language by more than 6 million indigenous Maya (over 4 million in Guatemala, approximately 2 million in Mexico, tens of thousands in Belize, and small numbers elsewhere).

But it’s so blindly conservative and their political op-eds are always written by neo-con American Jews. Krauthammer is considered its holy prophet. OTOH, the political op-eds and editorials in Haaretz are consistently well-written, even when right of center.

Haaretz and Hurriyet (Turkey) are my main windows into the Middle East. It’s amazing the nuance, as well as the breadth of information critical to our understanding, we miss when we depend on the NYT and WaPo.
