The Greeley Tribune Wants YOU to Pick Their Front Page Stories

  • by: Tyler Chafee

( – promoted by Colorado Pols)

The Greeley Tribune is tossing the reins of their newspaper over to the chaos of the internet… sort of.

We report. You pick the news.

Help the Tribune reflect your interests. Each day from noon to 5 p.m., Tribune editors will list the top stories being considered for tomorrow’s front page. You tell us which ones should make the cut.

One poll focuses on our local stories. The second poll highlights the top national and international stories of the day. Vote for one on each poll. Use the comment feature to elaborate, to lobby fellow readers or to discuss the news. If a story on your mind is not on our list, please tell us about it.

To vote, go to http://www.greeleytr….

So I thought I would try an experiment.  For the next week or so, I’ll post the story titles that are in the running.  Then I’ll follow up with a post that says which story won, and whether it was indeed on the front page.

Could be boring, could be fun, either way everyone should do their civic duty and VOTE.

You can review today’s options after the jump.  The polls close at 5:00.

  1. Nobody under the age of 40 reads newspapers anymore.  Those of us over 40 are finding better ways to get our news as well.  In 20 years the printed paper will go the way of hot type.

    1. How do you get your news? And before you say online, I want you to really think about it. By thinking about it, I want you to think about every website you read in a day, the ones that you read daily, and how much of the debate generated has a news article as a catalyst.

Yeah, in 20 years the “printed” paper may disappear, but, for my money, I will take a new york times article, a bbc report, an npr report, etc. over backyard journalism any day of the week. The physical manifestation of the paper may disappear, but the old gray lady isnt going anywhere.

Maybe the Greeley Tribune has employed a tasseographer. I think they are trying to capture those of you that are over 40 in an interactive way. I dont think it is necessarily a bad idea.

      1. Over the radio.  I listen to NPR,KOA and I have XM Radio in my car.  The diversity of opinion is greater there than on paper and the radio fits my lifestyle better than the net.

        1. And BBC after 10. My car is too old and I am too poor to get XM or Sirius. KOA is too conservative for my taste, and I cant get into Air America, but NPR is great.

I went out on a limb to assume that the internet is where you get your news, so sorry to pigeonhole.

          1. No appology needed.  You can get a portable XM for your car and the monthly service is less than 3 Venti Lattes!  The stock info on CNBC covers the cost easily.  Throw in C-SPAN, CNN, Fox News, Bloomberg and I’d be lost without it.  Variety is the spice of life.

    2. Sorry, I can’t recall exactly who said this a couple of months ago, but he said that (paraphrased) “If the Times stopped printing tomorrow, I wouldn’t care.”  He was recognizing the diminishment of print and the role of the internet.

If the gray “man” doesn’t care, who does?

  2. Results as of 5:35pm.  The polls closed at 5:00.

    1. As good a choice as any and better than most alternatives. If they can get decent numbers for the votes (the above actual totals are pathetic) it could be an interesting way to decide.

  3. but I’m disturbed by the national results. Are people so filled with hate for Bush that they can’t see the importance of the Darfur story? If this had come from an Al Gore would it have been the story of the day?
I am a very active member of ONE and we have fought for Congressional and Executive recognition for 2 years now. It is so important just to have America come out and call this what it is, Genocide! Maybe people have to be force fed some stories.

    1. It has to do with the fact that Colin Powell called it a genocide a long time ago and this administration did nothing. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the administration considered a state sponsor of terror, but then did nothing. In fact, for a time we considered them a sort of ally. Maybe it is america’s apathetic attitude towards the african continent as a whole. Either way, I cant help but roll my eyes at your ridiculous assertion that if Gore had called attention to this story it would be front page material.
