Perlmutter's Assault Weapons Ban Coming Next Week

Ed PerlmutterThe office of Rep. Ed Perlmutter announced that the House version of a new Assault Weapons Ban (sponsored by Perlmutter and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy) will be introduced next week. From the press release (full text after the jump):

The legislation lists 158 models of guns, like the AR series, the AK series, and Uzis, which do not serve a practical purpose of sporting or self-defense.В В  These are weapons designed by militaries to make soldiers on the battlefield more effective.В  This new assault weapons ban closes loopholes which plagued the 1994 ban, and it bans high capacity assault magazines like the 100-round magazine used in Aurora.

Rep. Perlmutter To Introduce Updated Military Assault Weapons Ban

“These are weapons of war, and belong in theaters of war… not in our movie theaters, schools, colleges, grocery stores, shopping malls, churches or on our streets.”

 

Washington, DC — Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter announced he will introduce the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 along with U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy in the House of Representatives and in coordination with Sen. Feinstein in the U.S. Senate. Perlmutter spoke at a press conference today with Sens. Dianne Feinstein, , Schumer, Blumenthal, Murphy and law enforcement officers, local elected officials, gun violence victims and their families as Feinstein introduced the companion Senate measure. The House version will be introduced next week.

 

Attached is a summary of the legislation and description of weapons subject to it.

Perlmutter stated, “I believe in the Second Amendment, and we have to protect the right to defend ourselves. I believe in liberty and rights of hunters, sportsmen, and personal defense gun owners. But we can’t continue silently watching 30,000 deaths a year by guns and near-monthly mass shootings in places we should feel most safe. Every day, families – like the ones impacted in Aurora –and in my neighborhood, in the grocery store, and who call my office are asking for solutions to the heartbreaking problem of gun violence.

 

We cannot wait another day, week or month. We cannot let another cop on the street be outgunned, or an innocent child be taken from their family. The time for action is now to keep our kids and communities safe. As the President recently noted, these are weapons of war, and belong in theaters of war… not in our movie theaters, schools, colleges, grocery stores, shopping malls, churches or on our streets. They are for use by our military to protect our country abroad and at home. There is nothing to fear in these ideas, and I will work to ensure the safety of our kids and our communities without infringing upon the rights of lawful, legal and responsible gun owners. ”

  3. comprehensive and definitive. Needs to allow background checks on “grandfathered” weapons by those with Federal Firearms License. Those folks do it now through the CBI in CO if you order a gun by mail or online.

    1. I think, not sure, but I think it is because if you just listed features common to these they might be easily modified to remove, replace, refine to try to get around the list

        1. as I read it the first part was a description, the second was the list. I did not read it as being that they were the sae necessarily. So, the Bozo is described in the first part

              1. One thing I am glad NOT to see. In ’94 there was a requirement for DOJ to give a report in 30 months of results. 30 months is too short a time to be statistically meaningful

                1. With grandfathering, 10 years is too short a time to be statistically meaningful. The previous ban expired before most of the guns it grandfathered were defunct.

                  This time around we have millions more assault rifles to deal with, as gun fanatics went out and purchased them by the metric buttload.

      I guess we’ll see if OFA is able to mobilize in this off year to offset the built in redleg advantage in most non Presidential elections.

      Ed’s obviously in a very swing District, and in western Jeffco the gun nuts are already passing out the crazy and incorrect bullshit about what the proposed legislation will include.

      Every single time the gun goobers get whipped up into their raging frenzies, the gun manufacturers/dealers reap whirlwind profits.

    I’m all for handguns and rifles, but fun shooting melons isn’t an excuse for the extreme dangers of assault weapons in private hands. I look forward to the angry doors I’ll knock in 2014 after this passes–they’ll give me a chance to remember the thankful parents behind other doors.

  9. Anyone else attend the gun control panel this afternoon at DU? Listening to Dudley Brown and Randy Lee Baumgardner literally gave me a headache. At one point one of the two gun regulation people on the panel (Arnie Grossman and John Head) told Mr Brown to please stay, we need you, after hearing the umpteenth idiotic statement from Baumgardner. I believe I even heard Dudley Brown at one point telling Baumgardner to be quiet. Need to see if there is a recording of the “debate.” A few of Baumgardner’s gems of wisdom: More people are killed by hammers than guns; and what is an assault weapon anyway – a bow and arrow used to be called an assault weapon. When Baumgardner was asked to comment on the fact that the RATE (that’s a hint) of gun violence in the U.S. is four times as high as that in Britain, and six times as high as that in Germany, Baumgardner attempted to explain that first you have to look at the size of the country.

    No one on the panel focused on the true issue – how to collectively problem-solve the out-of-control gun violence in this country, and moderator Gov Lamm did little to force a real dialogue. The event did not move the discussion forward even a millimeter.
