Four Democratic Gun Safety Bills Win Final House Passage

In a press release from Colorado House Democrats a short while ago:

HB13-1229, closing the loophole on background checks for firearms purchasers, passed 36-29. HB13-1228, ending the taxpayer subsidy for gun buyers’ background checks, passed 33-32. HB13-1224, limiting the sale, purchase or transfer of firearms magazines that can hold more than 15 bullets or eight shotgun shells, passed the House 34-31. HB13-1226, prohibiting concealed carry in buildings on Colorado’s public colleges and universities, passed 34-31. 

The package now moves to the state Senate. Not a single House Republican voted for any of the bills, which surveys show are supported by solid majorities of Colorado voters. [Pols emphasis]

“We can no longer walk around in our society with these blinders on as if nothing is happening,” Rep. Rhonda Fields (D-Aurora) told the House. Rep. Fields lost a son to gun violence and her district includes the Aurora theater where 12 were killed and 58 injured last July. 

“Responsible folks who own guns, they support what I’m doing,” said Rep. Fields, who sponsored the magazines bill and cosponsored the background checks bill with Rep. Beth McCann (D-Denver). “I have support from law enforcement. But most importantly I have the support of the families that have been impacted by gun violence.” 

“This is commonsense legislation that will take guns out of the hands of felons and will increase public safety,” said Speaker Mark Ferrandino. 

We'll update with coverage and opposing statements as they come in. Passage of these bills in the House was considered the more politically difficult hurdle of the two chambers, and the two most "controversial" of these bills, closing the so-called background check loophole and restricting magazine capacity to 15 rounds, have already been given the go-ahead from Gov. John Hickenlooper.

  1. Good work CO House members and my thanks to my state rep, Millie Hamner. Now, lets hope the Senate responds as positively for gun safety then we can move on to education finance

    1. Based on History, expect crime to go up if this becomes law.

      You bought into a lie that this will do anything to stop crime, or lower even Gun Deaths.

      When was the last time a criminal said to himself; "It's against the law to use a gun, so I won't."

          Criminal Fear Armed Citizens more than the Police because an Armed Citizen is under no obligations to arrest the Bad Guy; he can simply shoot and wait till the Police to show up after.

    Well, somebody has to stand up for the good old days of the Wild West when arguments were settled by men with guns.  Republicans are just doing their best to preserve our cultural heritage.

    First-year state Rep. Joe Salazar is apologizing for a statement during Friday’s debate over a concealed weapons ban on college campuses that has drawn the ire of conservatives across the blogosphere.

    In arguing in favor of the ban, Salazar, D-Thornton, said that women on college campuses don’t need guns to feel that they’re safe.

    “It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles,” Salazar said on the House floor. “Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop around at somebody.”

    Calling the rape police (we mean all you reporters, liberal bloggers and reporter/liberal bloggers who fixated on Ken Buck, Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock for the last, oh, 3 or so years): time to ask every Democrat you can think of, starting with Governor John Hickenlooper all the way down to the elected Democrat dog catcher in Buena Vista, whether or not they condemn the insensitive comments about rape made by the eloquent one, Rep. Joe Salazar (D-Box of Rocks).

    1. You're absolutely right, ArapaGOP.  That insult to women is appallingly inadequate.  Any middle-aged, white male Republican could have done a much better job explaining why feeble little girls ought to carry a 12 gauge semi-auto street sweeper in their purse.

      And hey, you call that an apology?

      “I’m sorry if I offended anyone. That was absolutely not my intention,” Salazar said. “We were having a public policy debate on whether or not guns makes people safer on campus. I don’t believe they do. That was the point I was trying to make. If anyone thinks I’m not sensitive to the dangers women face, they’re wrong.

      “I am a husband and father of two beautiful girls, and I’ve spent the last decade defending women’s rights as a civil rights attorney. Again, I’m deeply sorry if I offended anyone with my comments.”

      It's almost like he's proud of his record on women's rights, and doesn't give a crap what you and the professional whiners think?

      The nerve!

    2. There is no better demonstration of the widening gulf among women voters, than GOPers believing Rep. Salazar's comments are comparable to saying that raped women should be forced to bear the rapist's baby becasue it is a 'gift from God,'  I mean if their magic ladyparts didn't suceed in 'shutting the whole thing down.'

      If you were trying to coach Davie, a little hyperventilating overeaction was called for. Like if the one about college campuses actually passes,  that means all the teachers will be unarmed too. (hint- they already are.) 

       

  5. Major kudos to Rep. Fields. She has changed the direction of gun laws from heading toward the open warefare model of Iraq & Yemen and turned it to the direction of peace and civilization. It's rare that a representative can have such a significant impact, but with her work the direction has been changed – and that's gigantic.

    And these laws will have an impact. One that will never make the front page of the newspaper because "another child not shot" doesn't make the news. But there are children that will now grow to adulthood who otherwise would have been killed.

    Congrats to all who voted for this. And to the Republicans, as you sit there screaming "Second Amendment, Second Amendment," you are insuring that voters like me, who used to vote for Republicans at times (including Wayne Allard the first time), will never be willing to entrust you with control of the government.

  6. How about a law (A Proposition) that would take a Tax Payer Provided Security with Guns away from the Politicos?

    We don't know if someone on the Governor's Protective Detail might go crazy because of the gun he has and start shooting people because he has a gun; a Fully Automatic Gun at that.

    Same with all those Security Personnel with the State House & Senate; add in all the Mayors and members of City Counsels across the state; any day now one of them just might go crazy with his Fully Automatic Assault Weapon and shot a hundred little boys & girls at some school someplace.

    Think of how much safer everyone would be if we take Armed Security away from all the Politicos; do it for the children as they deserve to grow up safe from Full Automatic Weapons.
