Firefighters Endorse Shepard

From an e-mail we today received from Susan Shepard‘s campaign in District One:

The Denver Firefighters Local 858 has endorsed me, and this Thursday they will be in the district showing their support by driving around in their antique fire truck,  going door-to-door, passing out literature, and asking voters to vote for me.

This is a great endorsement for Shepard. Like we’ve said time and time again, endorsements from people who protect the public good look really good for a candidate. And Shepard’s making the most of that endorsement by driving around her district with firemen in an antique fire truck. It gets people to pay attention to a race that they may normally ignore, and it makes Shepard look like the candidate trusted by the people you trust to save your life.

This endorsement also highlights a bigger aspect of the campaign. Shepard narrowly lost to Paula Sandoval last year, garnering just under 400 votes fewer in a special election. In a general election just a year after she concluded her last campaign, Shepard’s got loyal supporters and pretty solid name ID.

It begs the question, is there really a race for District One? It’s Shepard’s race to lose, and she may just run away with the seat. We’d hate to be one of the other candidates right now. Shepard narrowly lost to one of Denver’s political powerhouses just a year ago. This year, in an open race with relatively unknown candidates, we’d be shocked if Shepard didn’t take home the prize.
