Marble says you can have your "Big Mac" but have "veggies on the side"

State Sen. Vicki Marble went on KLZ’s Grassroots Radio Colorado Friday to discuss the controversy over her comments about the eating habits of minorities.

Radio is a particularly good medium for someone to explain a botched public utterance, but the radio hosts put zero effort into eliciting a meaningful explanation from Marble.

Marble focused on good health and nutrition for everyone, not just blacks and other minorities. She said you can have your “Big Mac,” but have some “veggies on the side.”

Here’s part of what she had to say:

Co-host Ken Clark: What do you make of all the controversy?

Marble: Well first, good afternoon everyone. It’s a pleasure to be here. And the controversy, I am excited. We are getting this dialogue going. I mean, just let it run because we are coming out with the real medical research that will show that yes—but you know, I don’t care about who says what. And I want no apologies. I just want people to have the chance to get the education on their genetic predispositions to certain diseases, and if they choose to change their diet in order to keep their quality of life, then great! And if not, it’s their choice. But at least they have the information out there that will help them make an informed decision.

Clark: …It doesn’t matter how rich you are…

Marble: You’ll lose your job. And if it is cancer or heart disease, it’s very possible that your medical costs will drain, very quickly, your assets, your life savings, and you may even lose your home. And you could be poverty-bound forever, because it is very hard to get out of the poverty level once you’re in it. And if you have a life-threatening issue like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, you are, I guess, you are chained to it. You are a prisoner to your own health. And if you have a predisposition in your family, you should know about it. You should at least have the information and eat accordingly. And we always see these advertisements on TV and sound bites on the radio about our health, and eat healthy. That’s what we’re talking about. At least, know what you’re up against. Know what some of those quiet shadows in your health history may be, and live accordingly, if you choose. I’m not up for legislating anything about eating. It’s just getting the information out there. ..

Clark: …Where does this go from here? … Let’s quit screaming racist. Let’s have the conversation.

Marble: It’s true. Quality of life is not a racist issue. It’s a life issue for all of us. And we all intend, and we all want, for each and every American, and I wish it could be every person on this Earth. But for every person, quality of life gives you economic opportunity. And if you lose that quality of life through a life-threatening disease, it’s over. You are poverty-bound. And that’s what I really want to address. If you can delay those life threatening diseases, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, you name it. If you can delay that just, by eating a little different, you can still have your–

Clark: Big Mac.

Marble: Big Mac.

Clark: You can have your Big Mac. You can have your Big Gulp.

Marble: [laughing] You can have all that in moderation, but eat a couple fruits and veggies on the side, and just be aware. But it’s your choice.

Clark: Let’s face it. There are very few people on the planet who have the genetic disposition who can eat whatever they want without consequence…

Marble: And you know what, they call that, they got good genes. …

  1. Having the conversation??? . . .   Cripes.   How about we save some time and just skip all of this (and her) inane, ignorant blather and jump to the very last page —

Poverty is a  — the —  life threatening disease.  Contract it, be born with with, inherit it through some familial predisposition — doesn't really matter — your quality of life will be non-existant.  Let's end it, huh? . . .

(PS. Senator — forget the deflection; the more your mouth is open, the more you sound like what you are . . . ignorant and foolish.  Perhaps those are the two predispositions you might want to take the chance to educate yourself about?)

  2. Ronald McDonald and Mayor McCheese are gonna be pissed.

Here's a tip for Marble.  Ssssshhhh.  Quit talking.  If you must, when asked about it again, say: "It was a terrible choice of words, and I got called out on it.  There are real issues we should be talking about.  Racism–including an unconscious and inadvertant kind–is one of them, but so is poverty and the affects it has on poor diet choice and vice versa.  I meant to speak to that, but I did so poorly."

    1. You can't put them big words in Ms. Marbles' mouth, CT.  At least not successfully.  She can't pronounce 'em.  Doubt if she even knows what inadvertent means.  Sheesh.

  3. If Marble thinks obesity is a problem only for African American poor people she must not get out much. Being overweight is now pretty much the norm for middle class to affluent white people and obesity among such people is as common as dirt.  Has this woman been on a plane lately?

She might also be interested to know that it's not easy to eat enough healthy food to stave off hunger on food stamps or a low income, regardless of race (most of the folks on food stamps and  other public assistance are white, after all), nor is it easy for people in poor neighborhoods without cars to access large markets with lower prices.

But we wouldn't want to embarrass a person so obviously challenged by the multiple disabilities of ignorance, a world view blighted by racist stereotypes and a compulsion to keep digging. Who wants to volunteer to have quit word with her and everyone else like he? Warning:  It could take a while to reach each and every one privately but public challenges to the public statements of these blameless victims of unfortunate disabilities is so rude.

  4. ..and in true Republican form, the Senator would have no issue on how those veggies were made possible as a "side" to the  [once] pink slime  that was the ingredient in said Big Mac.  I have little doubt that if the pink slime had become an issue our state legislature had to take a position on, her caucus would have been staunchly defending McDonald's manufacturing process.

  5. Stupidity and lies.

The right rails against Mayor Bloomberg's law mandating that all restaurants include nutritional information on their menues.  Obmamacare rolls out the same mandate for any food businees with more than 50 locations next year.

Knowing the nutritional content of your food is mandatory for good health.  Most Americans couldn't read a nutritional label if their life depended on it (and it does.) Where does the party of big business stand on mandating such information sharing?  It's socialism or some other word they don't know the meaning of.

Marble saying she justs wants the information out there is lying.

  6. What????!!!!  Is Vicki Marble some sort of Marxist-Socialist-Nazi bleeding heart LIBERAL?

Clark: …It doesn’t matter how rich you are…

Marble: You’ll lose your job. And if it is cancer or heart disease, it’s very possible that your medical costs will drain, very quickly, your assets, your life savings, and you may even lose your home. And you could be poverty-bound forever

Next thing you know she's gonna try and force us all to save money by signing up for health insurance due to Obamacare, or worse SINGLE-PAYER insurance from Canada!

  7. 1. I never eat the Big Mac. Too expensive.

    2. I eat 2 $1 chicken sandwiches merged. One bun and 2 chickens and 2 lettuces and mayo. Mayonaise is a vegetable? Right? Oil is a veggie, I think. And, eggs are fruits from chickens. Veggie, fruit, whatever.

    3. $1.19 fries. I knows that fries is a veggie. Or a tuber. Sometimes life is too confusing.

    4. But, too piss of Vicki, I always drink diet soda. I am pretty sure she is a sugar beet supporter and a supporter of the Fanjul family.
