We've talked plenty in this space about the complete and utter nonsense of the grandstanding "secession" efforts underway in some parts of rural Colorado.
The whole idea officially just got more stupider yesterday when Moffat County officials decided to put the secession question on the ballot, as reported by the Craig Daily Press (the article is behind a paywall, but thankfully the "picture tells a thousand words" image of three old white dudes can be viewed by all).
For those of you who are a little rusty on your Colorado geography, here's Moffat County in relation to Weld County, the latter being the progenitor of this idiocy:

As long as we get to keep the Moffat Tunnel, I am OK with them leaving.
Even stupider. Maybe when "Colorado" is nothing but the metro counties you'll take this anger seriously.
No n3b. You and your fellow travelers can do as much mouth frothing as you want, but no one in their right mind takes this seriously.
I think they should be encouraged.
A lot of E. CO ag water comes from the western slope. Having them leave pretty much solves water shortages for the rest of the state AND keeps more water in rivers.
As for the stupidity of Moffat County joining a state 200 miles away, they cold both seek to be annexed to Wyoming. They'd have similar economies based on oil, gas,and meth. And it would eliminate that pesky problem of adding another star to the flag.
According to the Denver Post article, I believe the plan is for Moffatt County to join with Wyoming. I don't know why all these silly counties want to ruin our perfectly rectangular states.
Maybe they just want to mess with arch-liberal Al Franken.
Patriotic, that.
Rude awakening if they can talk Wyoming into taking them: all the small population counties do in the Cowboy state is bitch about the
metro'' areas of Casper and Cheyenne.
Utah is worse: Salt Lake and its burbs run the show, provided it fits the game plan of the LDS church.
But if they can talk WY into taking them, then they'll effectively raise tax rates on oil companies. It'll be free ice cream and pony rides for everyone!
AJB, I, too, wondered about the flagpole that would be required to join Moffat County to her fellow malcontents. Turns out Moffat wants Wyoming to take them in. But you're right, we keep the tunnel.
News Flash: Colorado will still be in its current shape after all of this blathering is over.
Most voters live in Metro Denver now. Get over it.
If there's one thing we know righties hate, besides Obama, it's broad participation in the democratic process. If most voters aren't like them it's not fair for most voters to vote.
In this case they're pissed about an earlier bill that was actually pushed by Sen. Penry and COGA, but they are still pissed at the 'liberal Boulder-Denver corridor.'
If all goes right after that, then the all Camaro led charge up Sears Canyon is ON !
Twitty, I've got the cold that's going around and you made me laugh so hard it set off a coughing fit. Oh, well, maybe that'll help the conchestion (chest congestion).
Moffat might consider splitting with some of it joining Utah and some Wyoming
Why do they think they can secede and still remain Americans?
That's all the effort I'm going to spend on this. Except to say, they call it the Stupid Party for a reason.
The question is: what do they do when the state legislature tells them to pound sand? Or, assuming the legislature wanted to be rid of them entirely, what would they say when the Congress says to like it or lump it as-is?
This whole secession thing is tilting at windmills.
On the other hand, what if the legislature says, "Okay, sure, go ahead"? It would be great fun to watch the ensuing madness.
Too bad it will never happen. That would make for one gold mine of a popcorn and beer concession.
An article int he Sentinel noted Rio Blanco County was declining because they didn't want to be booted fromt he CO River Compact. Wonder if the Weldistan Founding FlimFlam Artists thought of that one…
Oh come on. Don't be such a buzz kill. They're having so much fun stomping their feet and shaking their fists, refusing to compromise on anything and feeling superior to those urban/suburban folks who may be the overwhelming majority but aren't "real" Americans like them. Let them enjoy it a while longer. It will all be over soon enough.
Add Elbert County too. Grassroots Radio reporting that the commissioners just voted to put secession on the ballot.
I'm really hoping the lackwits in Mesa County jump on this bandwagon, but there's no way they'd give up their beer to become Eastern Utah.
Pity, because I was really looking forward to being part of the Rebel Alliance to topple the Dumbfuckistan Empire.
Could you imagine being Mesa County watching the Colorado River flow by and not having legal rights in this country to a single drop?
No.
Seems to me this 51st initiative comes because there are those laws that work better when they are local instead of statewide. I think Moffat, would indeed choose to be part of Wyoming (if they were allowed to leave). The residents may find they have more in common with the Wyoming lifestyle than the Denver area. Why would it be demanded they stay if, truly we cannot accomodate them? Would you demand a person continue to live in a houeshould that cannot, will not, refuses to even acknowledge that the rules do them more harm than good?
They'd just start complaining about all them big city folks in Cheyenne. And you do realize it's never going to happen? That this is just theater? Like the way the Colorado righties keep trying to pass personhood no matter how badly it loses evry single time?
The bill they are most upset about in Moffat COunty was sponsored in the Senate by Josh Penry of Grand Junction.
Personhood. Oi, it would be nice if they'd get the message already that is not going to fly here. And yes, I agree the whole secession thing is a poorly thought out emotional knee jerk that is going to fail. It is, however, an opportunity for growth on every party's part. To learn a bit more, to understad another point of view, to think of possibilities. Walk a a few feet in another's shoes, so to speak.
And, like personhood, it's great for grandstanding and fundraising. Considering how much ranchers and farmers get back from the feds and how heavily subsidized the oil and gas industrry is and the fact that nobody is taking away anybody's guns and hardly anybody hunts with anything that's in any danger of being taken away, I'm trying to walk in their shoes and really don't see all that much legislation that's hurting them any more than anyone else.
BC-only a slight correction, NO ONE hunts legally with anything that has been affected by gun safety measures. NO ONE
I stand corrected

Does he do fortune cookies or something?
Water, Wyoming, Congress, geography — those are real things. This isn't about that. It's about trying to secede from the 21st century. Moffat Cnty can just as easily join the Pretend Western State of Pleasantville as it can join the Weld Cnty Free State. It's all a sad frustrated revolt against reality (and book learnin).
