  1. To return to the topic of talk radio before Jason logs in with the latest "I am shocked, shocked I tell you, that talk radio hosts do not question republican guests."

Talk Radio outlets in the United States are approximately 90% conservative outlets.

This monopoly allows Republicansto do the following:

    1) Consolidate the conservative base – talk radio demographics swing toward older people, who are rapidly becoming more conservative…

    2) Feedback on talking points-talk radio gets callers when hosts can stir up anger…

so one can hear the same arguments from hosts across the radio band, nationally and locally.  Propagandists can fine tune their message by listening to the kind of response the talking points are getting….and adjust accordingly.  Democratics have not such feedback loop, except some sorry excuses for "push polls" and focus groups.  Conservative hosts also consistently reinforce what callers are saying…this gives the illustion to conservatives that they are being "listened to," and are an important part of the political process and party.

(None of the emails that I receive daily from top democrats…whom I am supposed to be really, really, impressed with because they address me by my first name…..allow a reply…..they all have, however, a link to give money…..even Jon Stewart screemed the othe night to dems, etc.."Stop sending me emails.)

    3) GOTV…this is the most important in low turnout elections…ie. mid-term….ie. 2010.

    4) Radio becomes important if and when people are in the car and heeding warning not to text or use cphones…..the casual listeners turns on the radio to get traffic and weather….and hears conservative talking points, also.  Since, there is absolutely no opposing views expressed, the casual listeners may think the talking points are valid or are even "news."

And while we are focused on the "crazies"….remember that Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania to mention four big northern states that voted for Obama but who have republican controlled legislatures and statehouses…all benefit from the conservative megaphone that is talk radio.

  2.  The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.

    Pesky US Constitution.

  3. Priceless reading if you have time.

Please google paul j kaplan open letter to jack kingston hardball talk.

It has teabag nation exact in words even a republican can understand.

    Promise: It's worth the read

  4. There is a slight increase in disgust of both parties voiced by non-political peoplr.  This is not good, but peobably somwthing the repubs are counting on to force Dems to cave once again.  Otherwise no income here.

    1. You haven't been reading any polls lately. The increase in disgust isn't slight and is doing nothing to erase the difference in the amount of disgust with each party. The best the R spin has been able to accomplish is to make both parties look worse but theirs, much worse. They have not been able to make the GOPT look any less bad in comparison to the Dems. Still more blame falling consistently on Rs. This is true among indies, those who don't self identify as partisan. Also, while of course far fewer Republicans have negative views of Rs than do Ds or indies, even Rs are producing higher disapproval numbers for their own party than a week ago.

  5. At Any Cost: How Catholic Bishops Pushed for a Shutdown—and Even a Default—Over Birth Control

In a letter dated September 26, Archbishop Seán Cardinal O’Malley of Boston and Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore prevailed upon members of Congress to attach to the next version of the CR measures that would allow private employers, as well as large church-affiliated institutions such as hospitals and universities, to be exempted from a part of the Affordable Care Act that requires that all insurance plans cover prescription contraception without a co-pay. (Houses of worship are exempt from this regulation, but church-affiliated institutions that serve a secular purpose are not.)

The letter was sent under the aegis of the USCCB (also known as the bishops’ lobby), and signed by O’Malley and Lori in their capacities as respective chairmen of the lobby’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities and Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty.

Legislation titled the Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940/S. 1204), crafted to the bishops’ specifications, was introduced in both chambers of Congress in March, only to languish in committee. (A similar bill, H.R. 1179, introduced in March 2011, died in committee.) And even earlier efforts to include such a ban on contraceptive coverage in the Affordable Care Act also failed.

“As Congress considers a Continuing Resolution and a debt ceiling bill in the days to come, we reaffirm the vital importance of incorporating the policy of this bill into such “must-pass” legislation,” wrote Lori and O’Malley in their September letter. (Emphasis theirs.)

When it comes to Congress, the lobbyists of the USCCB know their stuff—meaning they knew that such a maneuver would likely bring about a government shutdown. If poor babies went hungry because the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) closed down, so be it. If poor children were locked out of their Head Start classrooms, that was apparently deemed a small price to pay to make a stand against allowing people to plan their families.

    1. oh for god's sakes, dp, the bishops have been lobbying for this clause forever.  To assert that they had the power to deliberately force a condition that would close the government and starve babies is crazy.

You would be far better off showing that given the bishops concern for the life of children, why aren't they feeding mothers and babies from their rectories and churchs and parish halls?  Why are they using the vast financial resources of the church to help out families?  That is a real issue.

Camilo Torres was a priest in Colombia who is a martyr and who may well be made a saint by this pope.  Fr. Torres was "defrocked" by the cardinal of Bogota for the unforgiveable sin of feeding children from his rectory.  He later was shot, in the back, by government troops.

  6. Holy crap.  The Dow Jones rose 323 points on Wall Street's hope/belief that there will be a deal today to avert the debt ceiling disaster.  Yet, the meeting between Congressional leaders and Obama is only starting right now.

At the risk of losing my user name: ITLDSO, I think this was a great time to sell (sell high) and soon will be a great time to buy (buy low).  I think Wall Street will quickly learn that Boehner's pronouncements about when the debt ceiling will be raised are as useless as Coffman's pronouncements about the government shutdown.
