"I don't think Obama has a person-to-person connection with people. I think people love him because of his race and feel sorry for him, object of sympathy. I think people feel he's a victim, he portrays himself as a victim of America, he gets sympathy that way."

–Rush Limbaugh, yesterday

and the day after, he doubled down with what he called "An update on the Mrs. Doubtfire Recall" (Senator Hudak = Mrs. Doubtfire, get it? Hyar hyar)  in which Boyles called  the one lone person standing by the carmdoor a "militia", and said that Mike Rosen would be recruiting volunteers to defend the poor mistreated petition signers.

  2. Angry confrontation.  Boyles was on the attack.

Mauer did not successfully refute the contention that anti-petitioners were keeping people from getting out of their cars to sign the petitions.  But, boyles kept saying that he was in favor of background checks and Mauer did not point out that the universal background checks were new laws that Hudak, Giron and Morse had passed and was one of the reasons they were subject to recalls.

Last thing Boyles said was "Come on down to the station and bring Evie Hudak with you."  I would hope that that challenge would be taken up…..but, I think that they should be prepared for the boyles' style of attack.  They should stick to their points and not let boyles throw them.

    1. DP, thanks for the good visual summary of abortion law status these days.  I don't know if you're young or not, but have you noticed that young women are more pro-life and anti-abortion than we were? I've found very little research on this.

It's like young people in general are much more accepting of gayness and the whole spectrum of sexuality, but much less accepting of abortion. That's what I'm seeing among my young female students, anyway.

I am concerned about it, because we (my generation of feminists) worked damn hard to get Roe V Wade and reasonable birth control and abortion laws, and it looks as though we could lose all of that ground we gained. What do you think?

      1.  When I told my 32 year old daughter, very smart, working on research to publish for a Ph.D, that Bernie Herpin is in favor of a person hood amendment, she replied "well, I won't be voting for him.  Sadly we lost that round,  but I encourage Bernie to forward  on?  Please proceed, Mr. Herpin.

  3. Hey Pols.  How about posting a quote from someone who actually has something thoughtful to say.  You're as bad as MSNBC always focusing on Republican/conservative absudities.  How come you never post any quotes from the president or our Democratic legislators.  Who the fuck cares what Rush Limbaugh blathers on about?  Take about conservative bias in the media.  What a right wing echo chamber you boys have turned out to be.

    1. They've ignored my request to end the quotes from increasingly powerless and irrelevant Rush. When's the last time he was able to get what he wanted/ he didn't want McCain. He didn't want Romney. Sure didn't want Obama or a Dem majority Senate. He was going to move to Costa Rica (oddly since they have great universal healthcare) if ACA passed. He didn't want the GOP to give in on the shutdown showdown.  If it wasn't for lefty media showcasing his remarks to make fun of them, few would ever hear them anymore.

They also have ignored my suggestion, in the absence of an end to Friday Rush, to add, say, a Wed. (or some other day) quote from Mike Littwin along with a link to his column at the Colorado Independent. Two things would be accomplished: Having something intelligent to respond to and increasing traffic at a worthy site.

Anybody else think a regular Littwin quote and link is a good idea? At least as good an idea as more Rush blather?

    2. "You can be a king or a street sweeper, but everyone dances with the grim reaper"

      – Robert Alton Harris, or, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, circa 1991

      There

    3. How about a quote from the occasional lucid and intelligent Republican?

Abraham Lincoln regarding the effort to put capital on equal footing with labor or above it:

"Now there is no such relation between capital and labor as assumed,…..

Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."

  4. Did anybody notice the article that the Arctic is warmer than it has been in at least 44k years?

Average summer temperatures in the Eastern Canadian Arctic during the last 100 years are higher now than during any century in the past 44,000 years and perhaps as long ago as 120,000 years, says a new University of Colorado Boulder study.

    http://www.colorado.edu/news/releases/2013/10/23/cu-boulder-led-study-shows-unprecedented-warmth-arctic

Basically, they sample moss that re-emerged after glaciers retreated on Baffin Island. They analyzed the moss for carbon-14 (to carbon date it) and found essentially none. That's where the 44k number comes from – the limit for reliable carbon dates. The actual age of the moss must be greater than 44k. When they look at the ice core record from Greenland, the last interglacial period (no glaciers) was about 120k years ago. At that time, the northern hemisphere received  about 9% more solar radiation than it does today (due to orbital parameters, like tilt of the Earth's axis).

Thus, the last time we saw an Arctic this warm, it was due to long-term solar forcing. This time it's not. There's really only one explanation: Human CO2 emmisions.

    1. Yes, I saw that. Most of the Alaskan ecology is changing. I have a brother in law who lives up there – he says that trees that have grown tall rooted in the permafrost are just falling over because the permafrost has thawed.
