At Least She's Not Your President

Not Your President
Sanity, where art thou?

Roseanne Barr is a pretty well-known celebrity for Americans who grew up watching her TV show. The comedienne and macadamia nut farmer lived in Colorado for many years early in her career, and she made a return of sorts in 2012 when her name was on the ballot for President in our state as the nominee of the Peace and Freedom Party (PAF).

Roseanne ended up with 5,059 total votes in Colorado, which didn't get her anywhere close to the Presidency. And that's a good thing, because she has apparently gone completely insane. From Salon:

In her latest perplexing move, Barr, whose history of erratic behavior is as long as her career itself,  has written an open letter to Congress “regarding blackmail from the Executive Branch.” The subject alone is a tip-off to the dubious content within — as writer Jesse Berney noted on Twitter Tuesday, “If Obama is blackmailing Congress, he is the worst blackmailer of all time.” But the self-described “Peace and Freedom Party” candidate confidently states that the president has made “direct attacks against the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th amendments to the Constitution,” including “false flag terror attacks to remove the 2nd amendment (Boston Marathon; case in point).” She goes on to cite the “Nazi origins” of “ObamaCare” and to muse, “Some of you in the congress live alternative lifestyles. Some of you cheat on your spouses. Why should the camera only be pointed on you?- it’s time the camera was pointed on Obama.” The letter includes 41 pages of footnotes “detailing the blackmail of congress.” They feature SPECIAL REPORTS of lurid “lesbian sexual trysts,” “underage male prostitutes” and “Obama’s gay trysts.” On the Daily Banter, Chez Pazienza notes, “Almost all of them [are] sourced to batshit crazy Internet conspiracy theorist Wayne Madsen.”

We're almost impressed by the level of political crazy here. You know you've reached a pinnacle of conspiracy nut nonsense when others reply with, "Wait, what?" Is Obama a lesbian? We're confused.

  1. This is sad, and to my inexpert eyes, smelling of paranoid delusion and mental disorganization. But Roseanne Barr has always been open about her mental health issues. She said in the OTRC blog, referring to bipolar disorder:

I have it, as well as several other mental illnesses, but then, I've always been a trendsetter, even though I'm seldom credited with those kinds of things. And I was not crazy before I created, wrote, and starred in television's first feminist and working-class-family sitcom (also its last)."

Roseanne and I both worked on an early Denver feminist newspaper, "Big Mama Rag", although not at the same time,  and with a women's bookstore, "Woman to Woman". I've always admired her stubborn outspokenness and trailblazing.  To see her in better days, check out Amy Goodman's interview with her on Democracy Now.

I particularly recommend the clip from the  "Rosanne" show, starting at 37:35 minutes in, where Roseanne confronts a slick politician, about taxes, union organizing, wages, and struggles of working people. Not something one saw on mainstream TV much.

I really hope that she gets her meds adjusted, or somehow gets into a better place, so she can be the smartass we all know and love.

    1. Wait, did I say in my first sentence that I'm smelling with my eyes? Isn't that a symptom of schizophrenia? Better call for an intervention, stat

My point is to not be too quick to dismiss all of what Barr writes. She's been right a helluva lot more than she's been wrong. A few centuries earlier, she would certainly have been burned as a witch. This open letter, as I said, seems disorganized and paranoid, but there are grains of truth there.

That said, I guess I am glad that she wasn't elected President. I think someone has to be extremely mentally stable to be President. It's why I was scared spitless of the McCain/Palin ticket.

  2. It does, indeed, sound like her little red choo-choo's gone chugging around the bend. Sad. If she already had a diagnosed mental illnes, it's not uncommon to develop another. I think you're right, MamaJ she needs help. Probably not just a med adjustment, but a total psych. eval.
