"A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen."
–Winston Churchill

It was difficult for my wife and I to contain our amusement this morning as we watched the news about the unfolding internecine war in the Republican party. I am guessing the Tea Party will separate from the GOP and insure the demise of both.
It is anybodys' guess as to how this will shake out, but reconciliation between the warring factions seems, to me, very unlikely. No more elephants wearing three cornered hats…
yuk, yuk….
"…November, Texans must show a photo ID with their
up-to-date legal name instead of IDs like a birth certificate.
That's not a problem for single or married men but it leaves a
third of Texas women scrambling in a state with just 81 DMVs in
its 254 counties."
We must have been watching different news. If this passed, quiety, in Colorado in 2007, the 2008 cycle would have been very different. If it was in effect in 2010, Senator Buck wouldn't be a part of the clown car this time around. I don't think it would have changed much for Governor Maes, but there would not have been a Evie Hudak recall.
If it didn't piss me off so much, I'd acknowledge it's brilliance.
It is really a problem also, in Pennsylvania. Evidently, there the name must be consistent through DVMs, birth certificate, social security, marriage license.
Have Texas women filed a discrimination suit? They should.
I had a hard enough time with that kind of bureaucratic nonsense in New York when I was trying to get a car registered. Seems my out-of-state registration, a ticket I'd received, and the title were in different versions of my name. I had to go through a lot of hoops to get someone to correct their version so that they all matched (there was no provision for accepting the discrepancy as "okay").
The situation is weirder than you think. Prior to the adoption of the voter ID law in Texas, the statutes required women who adopted their husband's surname to replace their given middle name with their maiden name on their driver's licenses. So, the law itself created the problem. Single women and "modern, progressive" women who kept their maiden names after they married are not affected. This is not sitting well with traditional Republican women in Texas.
Many women used to retain their maiden names while adding their husband's name as a surname. Mary Ann Taylor becomes Mary Ann Taylor Jones, or Mary T. Jones.
I did the same thing and would be in a pickle if an election judge asked why my middle name is one thing and my middle initial in my signature is from my maiden name. I have four names. It's a good thing a lot of the judges are older ladies who may understand this. No one has ever questioned it. Well, there was the old patrol guy who issued my first Colorado driver's license. He said I "gave up" my maiden name. As if. I had to call his boss. Texas is in trouble.
There was a report in the MSM that woman judge in Texas who was not allowed to vote in the November election because her driver's license had her maiden name instead of her given middle name. She was hopping mad but could do nothing but vote a provisional ballot.
She might be doing something. Someone will, who wants to be "provisional"?
"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated"
This won't be the demise of the Republican Party, though it may spell the end for the Tea Party. When Perot and the Sage Brush types gave us President Clinton, People talked about the demise of the GOP. Two years later, they won the House. When Obama won in '08, they talked about a politcial realignment, the end of the 6th Party System and the demise of the GOP. Two years later, they won back the House, and nearly won back the Senate.
Sometimes it takes a couple of election cycles for the loonies to punch themselves out for the establishment and party faithful stop letting them have a say in things. If the song remains the same after 2014, count on a whole lot of Moderate Republicans running in 2016 – and actually getting the nominations.
Happy St. Lucia Day! This is one of our seasonal holidays referenced in the greeting "Happy Holidays", and they go right on into the new year. Isn't it wonderful that we have such a rich and diverse cultural heritage. A war on Christmas… ah huh.

I hope I don't need a tongue in cheek smiley for this post or need to note that other religions besides the various forms of Christianity have celebrations and observances during this time of year.
Miss Jane, here's another interesting article about Lucia. It goes farther back than the Chrisian St. Lucia.I thought you might find it interesting.
Oops! I got distracted and forgot to post the link. http://www.schooloftheseasons.com/lucy.html
Thank you for the link. So much of Christianity has pagan and Mediterranean religious roots. It does make one smile.
