  1. Gov. Huckabee and the Republican War on Women

Did others read the statements made yesterday by former Arkansas Gov.and Fox News Host Mike Huckabee at the Republican National Committee winter meeting?

His statements were appalling and again show how the Republicans continue their War on Women. He attempted to characterize the Democratic attitutde toward women as one where Democrats think of women as weaklings who only want the federal government to pay for their birth control because they can't control their libido. Its hard to believe anyone could say such things, let alone believe them, for the simple reason the Democrats have been and are the champions of womens freedom to live their lives as they see fit. He didn't really define what Republicans believe about women but his statement was code for the Republican position that government should be used to outlaw abortion and thereby remove from women their freedom. It was a truly a pathetic attempt to define his opponents (the Democrats) in a false light for the purpose of taking the spotlight off his and the Republican Party's view of women.

His excuse for such extreme rhetoric, I guess, is the fact he is mulling another run for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2016 and under such circumstances he must garner the support of the radical extremists who control the party to win the nominaiton.

By the way, it must be noted that when Gov. Huckabee made those statements about women, the members of the Republican National Committee cheered.

    1. Huckabee and his brethren cannot escape their fundamental Christian delusions. One of the most basic of Christian tenets is the patriarchal view that men are a dominant gender and women are to be obedient to their husbands.

It is a pathetically weak attempt to maintain dominance in a world where they are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

      1. The misogynism we can write off, although it will cost them elections. The disregard for basic biological science? Birth control for libido management? Really? Tiny rapist sperm-seeking commando cellss in women's bodies to "shut all that down"? Really?

It's of a piece with birtherism, climate science denial, creationism, and the whole reliance on scripture instead of empirical data. It's ironic that the whole founder's "separation of church and state" thing goes right by them, too.

      2. One of the most basic of Christian tenets is the patriarchal view that men are a dominant gender and women are to be obedient to their husbands.

Um, no – and Hell, no. Don't even start to lump in my beliefs with fundagelical Dominionist crap. Early Christianity sported women in leadership positions, holding gatherings and referenced with titles now restricted to men in the Catholic church. Not all Christians hold these views; many of the mainline denominations are well past many of the cultural issues of Bibilical culture.

        1. Thank you, PR, for standing up for Christians who are not misogynists or evil bullies.  Huckeabee should be condemmed by leaders of mainstream Christian churches, as well as other nonChristian dominations.

He doesn't even make sense in the biblical traditions that women going back to Eve are evil and they tempt men and thus should be controlled or killed. catholic doctrine  is that wives are not allowed to say no to their husbands and thus there is no such crime as martial rape. But women as sex crazed creatures…that is brand new.

I hear both kinds of reactions to huckabee.  One is for him to keep talking and it will help the dems win in 2014.  The other is that this has to stop because it gives permission for continued abuse of women's civil rights as well as potential violence against women.

          1. He and others in the party are going to continue talking anyway – it's apparently what they have inside of them to contribute in the way of "wisdom". The party refuses to admit that their "messaging" problem is really a problem with their candidates – probably because they don't see the underlying beliefs as an actual problem. This is today's GOP, raw and exposed. Best let it see the sunlight; hopefully there are enough people in this country who don't want that kind of stuff anymore.

        2. You are, of course, correct, PR and I misspoke. I should have limited my accusation to a subset of Christians. Fundamentalist church-going Christian men love to use Pauls' admonitions in Ephesians to justify all sorts of misogynistic crap. They are the object of my ridicule.

Thanks for catching me on that.

    2. Huckabee is firmly in the "women can shut that down" camp IMHO.

What irks me is that anyone buys this argument or cheers its advance. Unless his purpose is to cause brain hemorrhaging in intelligent people who happen to catch his statements…

        1. The HTML looks like what you see. I'd be interested to know what you think you entered and how (i.e. cut/paste vs. typing) – I'm trying to make some recommendations on easy fixes to the Guvs, but I don't see anything to work from on this post…

  2. Keystone XL Pipeline – surprise, surprise, it's all about the Koch Brothers:

Approval of the Keystone XL pipeline could generate $100 billion in profits for billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, according to a report released Sunday, which revealed the extent to which the Kochs would benefit from the tar sands development the proposed pipeline would help spur.

A progressive think tank called the International Forum on Globalization completed the study, which found that the Kochs and their privately-owned company, Koch Industries, hold up to 2 million acres of land in Alberta, Canada, the proposed starting point of the Keystone XL. Several Koch Industries subsidiaries stand to benefit from the pipeline’s construction, including Koch Exploration Canada, which would profit from oil development on its land, and Koch Supply and Trading, which would benefit from oil derivatives trading.

This shows that much of the noise from Republicans, and much of the pressure on Democrats, is most likely coming from Koch Industries and all their little helpers who've been bought and paid for many times over. As Sen. Edward Kennedy once said, "When will the greed stop?"

      1. Does anybody here know whether a pipeline developed to carry bitumin suspended in kerosene can also handle crude oil? Seems like there could be some differences.

          1. Different batches can be sent in a pipeline on the same day. a small amout of mixing takes place at the margin, but that part is reprocessed when it reaches the destination.

I don't know if there is a limit to the differences in viscosity of liquid that can be used in adjacent placement. Maybe so, in which case, perhaps a "pig" can be inserted between batches. I don't know…

  3. Republicans, now solidly presenting a unified front, will deliver three separate rebuttals to President Obama's State Of The Union speech on Tuesday.

The "official" rebuttal will be given by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05), who sits in the middle of the Republican pack values-wise.

Sen. Mike Lee (UT) will give the Tea Party response this year.

Sen. Rand Paul (KY) will give the Rand Paul party response (or something…).

  4. Conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza has been charged with campaign fraud for contributing to the campaign of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's (NY) 2012 challenger under different names in order to avoid the campaign spending limits.

(The source wasn't clear if he was reimbursing others – it sounds like that might be the actual allegation – or if he was just falsifying campaign contributions directly.)
