Rep. Mike Coffman cures cancer, or something.

From a franked mailer sent to CD-6 constituents at taxpayer expense.

Rep. Mike Coffman has become quite adept at taking multiple positions on specific issues, sometimes flip-flopping within less than 24 hours. As he faces his most difficult re-election challenge, against Democrat Andrew Romanoff, Coffman is trying hard to cut-and-paste over his own record, which his campaign must know is incredibly damaging.

Coffman has been an unabashed supporter of Personhood, which is of the belief that "life" starts just before a man and woman have finished having the sex with each other. He supports the "re-definition" of rape (as does Rep. Cory Gardner, BTW) to mean "forcible rape," which is, in a word, ludicrous. Coffman has co-sponsored legislation that would cut off funding for stem-cell research, which is pretty common among Republican elected officials who are as extreme right on abortion as Coffman has been.

Can you guess where this is going?

Perhaps it should be unsurprising, then, to see a "franked" mailer go out in his congressional district touting Coffman as a champion for curing cancer and advancing stem-cell research. Is it true? Who cares, right? This is New Coffman® we're talking about, after all.

Coffman says he's made it a "priority in Congress to fund the kind of medical research that helps find the cures that can prevent these hearbreaking losses." It's not true, but it sounds nice, doesn't it? Or how about this line, "We have a moral obligation to continue this research." Really? Then why has Coffman tried to defund stem-cell research? Or was that just Old Coffman speaking?

LOL. I got one of those flyers. Plus, he lists all these supposedly "helping cure cancer" bills he's supported and fails to mention that most of them didn't even get passed out of committee.

What a slimy tool. And to think that he's doing it on MY dime.

The mailer says "adult stem cell research" which distinguishes it from the controversial, personhood prohibited, embryonic stem cell research.

  It's carefully worded so they can defend it, but you know what they're trying to do here. Most people don't know enough to make a distinction between stem cell types. If he was really worried about not being misleading, the mailer would note that Coffman opposes embryonic stem cells. We're more interested in the overall intent.

Evolution is the basis of all biological based sciences. Republicans who reject evolution en masse and generally pursue an anti-science agenda, drastically cutting funding for research of all kinds can't, with the slightest credibility, take credit for helping to cure ANYTHING. Any advances in fighting cancer or ANY OTHER DISEASE are made IN SPITE of GOTP obstruction.

You can be anti-evolution, You can be a supporter of medical research to cure diseases, alleviate suffering, expand opportunities for life enhancing treatments for those born with handicaps, congenital conditions and limitations of all kinds. You can't be both. Period. This flat earth champion has a lot of nerve.
