2014 Colorado Primary Election Night Open Thread

UPDATE 10:00PM: Democratic Governors Association chair, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin:

"Under Governor John Hickenlooper's bipartisan, business-oriented leadership, Colorado has made tremendous economic progress over the last four years. The unemployment rate has dropped from 9.1 percent to 5.8 percent, the state has improved from 40th to 4th in the nation for job creation, and we've seen 31 consecutive months of job growth. By working with business leaders to drive Colorado-based ideas, innovations, and solutions, Governor Hickenlooper has helped build an economy that's stronger and fairer for the middle class.

"In stark contrast, Republicans have nominated longtime Congressman Bob Beauprez. Since his historic, 17-point defeat eight years ago, Beauprez has given voice to extremism and rigid partisanship as a fringe radio host. While Both Ways Bob will spend the next few months trying to use the double-talk he mastered as a Washington politician trying to explain away his troubling record and radical views on everything from the imminent threat of Sharia law to the 'hoax' of climate change, voters won't be fooled. We look forward to Governor Hickenlooper's reelection in November."

UPDATE 8:00PM: a very, very familiar face you'll be seeing a lot of until November:

beauprez

UPDATE 7:45PM: Multiple news outlets now calling the GOP gubernatorial primary for Bob Beauprez.

——

UPDATE 7:27PM: FOX 31's Eli Stokols:

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners are celebrating a hard-fought primary victory here tonight, as newcomer Tony Sanchez appears headed to victory over attorney Mario Nicolais in the race for the GOP nomination in state senate district 22.

Sanchez has doubled up Nicolais 66-33 percent with around 8,000 votes counted.

Senate Democrats are also celebrating Sanchez’s likely win, which may help them hold onto a senate majority this November.

While Sanchez, along with the RMGO-backed Laura Woods, who’s holding a narrower lead in her primary battle with Lang Sias in senate district 19, hold strong appeal to the conservative base on primary night, most observers believe they’re far too conservative for the districts they seek to represent.

—–

UPDATE 7:25PM: In CD-4, Ken Buck rapidly pulling away from Scott Renfroe. This race will be called soon.

—–

UPDATE 7:20PM: Tight race emerging in CD-5 with Rep. Doug Lamborn barely ahead of challenger Bentley Rayburn in early returns. In the HD-15 GOP primary, Gordon Klingenschmitt and Dave Williams are too close to call.

—–

UPDATE 7:15PM: Rocky Mountain Gun Owners having a good night so far, endorsed candidates Laura Waters Woods and Tony Sanchez leading in the SD-19 and SD-22 GOP primaries respectively.

In the HD-24 Democratic primary, Jessie Danielson beating Kristian Teegardin. Alec Garnett ahead of Owen Perkins in the HD-2 Democratic race.

—–

UPDATE 7:10PM: Early results with 18% of precincts now reporting:

Beauprez 32.5%
Gessler 25.2%
Tancredo 24.0%
Kopp 18.1%

Still very preliminary. Tom Tancredo presently leading in bellwether Jefferson County.

      1. Nah, BWB never had a chance to begin with and I thought it very funny when he threw his hat in the ring. Whoever convinced him it was a good idea to run again deserves a gold medal for persuasion. Of course, I could be totall wrong and he someone pulls it off, I just highly doubt it.

31% for Tanc is a respectable total for someone running on pure name recognition in a somewhat competative primary. 28% for Gessler means Kopp was able to pull enough from Tanc & BWB to squeek by.

      1. Tipton reads his talking points. If it's a loonie crowd, he blathers TP talking points. If he's talking to rational Republicans, he touts the job creators-cut taxes line. He's flexible, which is easy when there's no mind to work with.

  3. Rayburn an odd duck: military creds, but Tea Party principles will be his driving philosophy.

CO D's in Washington should beat him up 24×7 if he wins.

    1. Congressional R's Sing along with their fellow Members and Celebrate* the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

      * Or they look like they've only been constipated for a week or so….

  4. And Stevie King is getting his own tank!  I guess the nutters won't be going to war with BLM after all.  Sad day in Tea Bag Land!  The Country Club set still rules the roost in Mesa County.

      1. Most people's attention will be on his time cards, but the real bomb is the Brady letter. King was the advisory and chief prosecution witness in the Blagg case. That one won't fit comfortably in the political rear-view mirror.

  5. I was wrong about  Tancredo.  He would have been a fun candidate.  I voted for Flores for State Board of Education and am absolutely shocked that she won….she beat out the candidate endorsed by everyone who is anybody in the Denver Democratic Party/Foundation/Reforme…etc.etc.etc.  clique….

Flores was endorsed by the teachers union…..

    Ralphie,

Weren't you watching the cd3 race for the state board of education?

    1. Later, Dwyer. My first curiosity was nutjobs vs establishment Rs here in the county. I haven't looked at all of CD3 yet but Neal was leading Mesa County by less than I expected considering she served on the local school board.

  6. Beaupez leading handily in Mesa County with >41 percent of vote. Gessler a sad 4th out of 4 with <17 percent. Preliminary numbers, of course, with not all ballots counted. But Gessler trailing.Kopp? Poor Moddy! I guess that positive message must have gone right over the heads of the "just fell off the turnip truck" crowd here in Lower Slobbovia.

  7. Well, I guess Tanc proved that if you really don't want to get elected and barely campaign, voters will not vote for you.

Darn, coulda been so muc fun!

So now we get to expose BWB's dingbat ravings for the past 8 years to let voters decide the true measure of the man.

    1. Is it too late for Tanc to declare the GOP candidate seriously flawed and then accept to American Constitution Party nomination…..again

      1. ACP is hitting low 2 digit numbers in a couple of races they are running.  I think I saw 500 votes in their SOS race.  Definitely need Tanc to come to their rescue and keep their "major" party status.

But alas, I think the Tanc has tanked his last race.

    2. At least the lease for the Tancredo Denver/Glendale HQ is not up. More expenses.  Might have Tancredo take over as the "WE BUY GOLD" sign waving guy on Leetsdale until the lease is up as he has nothing else to do but to pay off tons of debt incurred with not bothering to campaign.

(I live near his Denver/Glendale HQ about 8 blocks away, and I fart and let my dog shit on It – if I had one)

  8. BTW, GOP turnout was impressive — guess having 4 clowns is better than 1 to choose from, really bringing out the votes 😉

Noticed significant undervote on both sides as you slide down the ticket.  We'll definitely need GOTV and name recognition ads for the general to make up the deficit.

Also, anyone else smell cooked goose in SD3?  Even with 2xGOP turnout, George Rivera trailing his Dem opponent for the general 🙂

    1. What do you mean, Davie? Rivera wasn't primaried. He willl go up against Leroy Garcia for SD3 in the general. In spite of Rivera trying to paint himself as moderate, and voting, I have to say, with rural constituents instead of corporate ones on property rights, he still is going to get trounced by Leroy in November.

      1. MJ, that was my point — in all the other races, GOP candidates, due to massive turnout for the Guvs race, got 50% to 100% more votes than their Dem counterparts.  So, obviously to win in November, we'll need both higher Dem turnout as well as winning a majority of unaffiliated votes.

I noticed that Rivera, despite the GOP turnout advantage, only got 6800 votes to his November opponent's 9400.  So yes, we both agree, Rivera needs to work on planning for his next gig outside the legislature 🙂

        1. There were huge undervotes on both sides in the recall election. A majority voted for the recall,   but couldn't muster the enthusiasm to check next to George Rivera's name.

              1. In Hick's case, we sure as hell will.

I've said it before, I'd rather have a Governor who's a shill for the Oil and Gassholes than a bigoted, racist, theocratic, ammosexual throwback who's also a shill for the Oil and Gassholes.

And what exactly do you mean, "look at Obama in 2012"?

    1. Gessler did surprisingly well in Pueblo county – 43%. But then, he spent so much time down here catering to the wacky fringe during the recalls.

  9. It didn't take long for Beauprez supporters to make their first oops. From "Republicans Who Want to Win" news release, a few minutes ago:

The sign of things to come, apparently…

    1. Let's try that again (this editor drives me a little nuts)

From Republicans Who Want to Win news release, a few minutes ago.

      RepublicansWhoWantToWin.com

      Beauprez previals, just the beginning

Denver (June 24, 2014) – 9 News just called the gubernatorial primary for Bob Beauprez.

“Finally, a real leader will offer a clear vision to Coloradans for our future,” said Mark Burris, spokesperson for Republicans Who Want to Win. “We are pleased that we were able to assist through dynamic outreach and a strategic media plan. This is just the beginning.”

            1. That figures the corollary to Lewis' "when fascism comes…" goes- when fascism comes to the United States it will be riding a government subsidized power chair wrapped in excess body fat and carrying a misspelled sign.Besides as Jon Stewart has noted the real genius of the conservative movement and their propaganda organ Fux Noise is their constant evocation of victimization.

          1. Go both ways on two issues, you've got four visions!  Depending on how many issues BWB flips on, you could have infinite visions for how COlorado should be run.

  10. My candidate for HD47, Lucretia Robinson, won the nomination 69-29% over her Democratic rival, Terrance Halstead. Now on to challenge Clarice Navarro-Ratzlaff!

And in El Paso County HD15, Gordon "Dr Chaps" Klingenschmitt has triumphed 52-47% over David Williams! Hallelujah, either Lois Fornander will get the votes of the unaffiliateds in her district – or we can all look forward to years of "At least he's not YOUR state senator" posts on every other state's blogs.

  11. Last figures I saw just after 10 PM on local Fox news were 30% for BWB, 27% for Tanc, 23% for Gessler and 20% for Kopp.  And it looks like Modster is gone already.

We knew Tanc never wanted to actually become Governor but his end game pretty much showed that he didn't even want to have to go through mounting another attention getting but losing gubernatorial campaign, this time as the chosen GOTP candidate. Pretty sure those hoping he'll go third party again after this loss will be disappointed. I know I am. Davebarnes is right about the BWB boring factor.

Speaking of, wonder how much more of his own money BWB is going to shell out to lose to Hick again? This isn't going to be considered one of those highly competitive priority races for money to be poured into.

On the plus side I'll stop getting those inexplicable calls (four of them in the past couple of weeks, the last one today) urging me to vote in the HD22 Republican primary for someone the robocall promises is the most conservative candidate even though nobody here was ever a registered R and our address has always been in HD38 (as long as we've lived here anyway) both before and after redistricting. Unless they keep calling me for the general.  Damn!
