Woods: Become a fake Republican and vote in GOP primary!

Laura Woods.
Laura Woods.

The day before the Republican primary, in which Republican Laura Woods triumphed over Lang Sias for the right to take on Democratic State Senator Rachel Zenzinger, Woods made the following comment on the KLZ’s Grassroots Radio Colorado:

WOODS: “…tomorrow, if you’re an unaffiliated voter, and you don’t want more of the same, go down to the polling place, change to a Republican for a day or two, fill out a ballot, and then after the primary, if you don’t want to stay a Republican, you don’t have to stay. You can unaffiliate again. But you can be a part of the change right now by electing somebody who is going to stand up for the Constitution.”

Listen to Woods suggest unaffiliated voters briefly switch parties to help her win GOP primary 6-23-14

There's nothing illegal about Woods' suggestion, but the folks down at KLZ, including host Kristina Cook, are all about "principles."

How principled is it to try to win a Republican primary with the votes of fake Republicans? It doesn't appear that Woods' suggestion made any difference in the election, but if I were running the show at Grassroots Radio Colorado, I would have asked Woods about her idea that unaffiliated voters should join the GOP for "a day or two."

Or maybe Jon Caldara will invite her on his KHOW show and compare notes. In any case, it's done now.

  1. Hey–I affiliated Republican to vote in the Primary.  Was lots more fun than voting in a lot of uncontested races on the other side.  The law lets us do it, and I highly advocate that unaffiliated voters do it rather than complain about lousy choices in November.

    1. I agree.  It's a time honored practice in Mesa County where the outcome of the primary is 99.9% sure of being your elected local/state leg office holder.

    2. Me, too. Here in Mesa County, the Republican primary is the only real vote available. Just look at Jared Wright. I did switch back asap. I have no desire to die a Republican.

  2. I agree, Ralphie…..I wish we had completely open primaries in CO (Dems could vote in Repub primaries and vice versa)…..I would love to help the out the Grand Old Party in its never ending quest for purfication and eradication of the last of those RINOs.  I live in SD 22 and would have been happy to support Tony Sanchez and Tanc in the primary.

  3. No different than the dems who nominated Tad Cochran over a Fascist opponent in Mississippi.  Colorado law allows independents to declare at the  polls and I know some who makd a habit of it.

  4. So much boo-hooing in Mississippi over Cochran winning his primary with the help of Dem votes. The rule there is you can vote in either party primary, regardless of registration, as long as you haven't voted in the other party's primary.  So…. perfectly legit, no need for any registration hi jinks.

As with changing just for a primary, in many solid counties that's the only way to have any voice at all if you are in the minority party that never wins. I can see why Mississippi Dems in Cochran's district would have an interest in supporting the less crazy Repug. It's not as if they have a chance at electing a sane Dem.

As for doing it to select the weakest candidate for your party's candidate to run against, both par sometimes try to do it but the universe of people willing to go to the trouble is almost always too small to get the desired result. Not enough Ralphies and davebarns' to pull it off.

As for the principles of rightie talk radio hosts…. seriously?
