  1. National R's are still going after #BENGHAZI just to pummel the pres and bump up his negatives (tho they are far more in the "negative" than the president).

At the same time they've stumbled on another "base mobilizer" in this immigration issue on which they've purposely done nothing for years.

The fact that national R's are immobilized by their scared and nativist base, who are agitating against children, who are advocating Obama now break 2 key immigrations laws signed by George W Bush and repatriate them immediately.

While R's advocate Obama not follow the law, and while they and their fearful base agitate against immigrants, they are all surely inspiring a whole new generation of Democratic voters who will never be fooled by Republicans' claim that they are "rebranding" themselves and care about anyone but White, Male 1%-ers and their flunkies.

    1. Yes, Zap, the nativists want to send militias to the southern borders to threaten these children and families.  Our elected "Constitutional Sheriffs" are fellow travelers with these fearful bigots.  The hate groups count on the Sheriffs to give them some legitimacy in their intimidation of immigrants  and confrontations with Federal agents. .Being a Border Patrol Officer must now officially be one of the worst jobs in the country.

The United States has historically been welcoming to refugees, although prejudices have made some more welcome than others. These particular refugees are fleeing gang and drug cartel violence.

What will we do with the coming floods of climate refugees, whose homes will be flooded by rising ocean levels, whose livelihoods are gone? We need to follow existing laws and look to being more flexible and humane in the future.

      1. Having some relatives from and in Honduras, there is also the very complicating factor that we deported many gang members from California back to Honduras, where they took over like a renaissance mafia in that poor country. Those criminals are who the children are fleeing from.

  2. Another GOP sheriff (or sheriff wannabe) is standing tall and standing his ground.  This one is in Mesa County where Steven King will not step down.  Nice pic of him in the Post this morning.  Wonder if he has any shirtless selfies taken in the bathroom….

    1. This article? Let me get this straight – King was fired, but still running as the GOP candidate for Sheriff. He was double dipping, and fudging his timecards, but wants to be in charge of upholding the law and public safety.

      Who's running against him?

Your Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey, at least, has a nuanced statement on the CSPOA site that supports 2nd amendment but rejects the "posse comitatus" notion that County sheriffs must be antagonistic against their Federal counterparts. Good on him for walking that fine line. Hilkey is now with the CBI, according to the Post article this morning.

      1. The Republicans have a replacement candidate for King all picked out, I am told by a high-ranking Republican source I trust.

There are several unaffiliated candidates running against him, which is an uphill battle because party support is important for phone banking and canvassing.  One of the candidates, Pat Arotin, is pretty good, I think.  At least he gave good answers when the Sentinel interviewed him.  But he's a long shot.

I suspect King will be given the opportunity to remain a candidate until the criminal investigation into his activities is complete.  But there will be lots of pressure on him to step down no matter what the investigation turns up..

Hilkey is not just "with the CBI."  He is head of the Department of Public Safety, a Cabinet-level job.  He is in charge of CBI, the Colorado State Patrol, the Department of Criminal Justice, the Division of Fire Prevention & Control, the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the School Safety Resource Center, and the DPS Human Resources division

        1. I read the article and shouldn't Colorado Mesa University be investigated. If the facts are correct, there is no way Sen. King could clock in 190 hours in a month as a guest lecturer and a provider of security services at Colorado Mesa Univeristy while working in Denver five days each week as a state senator, plus clocking in 100 hours per month at the Mesa County sheriff's office. This really has a bad stench to it.

What "security services" did he provide Colorado Mesa University and how many times did he teach as a guest lecturer? Who hired him at Colorado Mesa University? How much has Colorado Mesa paid Mr. King? The Grand Junction Police Department provide the police for Colorado Mesa and the department maintins a substation on campus. What in the world was the university thinking and who was suppose to keep watch on this contract?

Coloraodo Mesa should make Mr. King's contract and time cards public and let the voters decide the election and the DA decide what to do about the criminal investigation.

      2. I am writing in the name of Benita Phillips for Mesa County Sheriff. She is a friend,  and one of the most professional people I know. And about as far from a "constitutional sheriff" as you can get. Benita is hard nosed and doesn't take any shit from anyone…even me  :)…but she isn't a gun nut…and beholden only to her word, her conscience, and her constituency.

I know there are some who don't take her seriously as a candidate, but I also know a bunch of people who have told me they support her. Isn't it about time we focused on the "serve and protect" aspect of the job instead of the "egos with a gun" focus we now have?

        1. The Mesa County Sheriffs have at least one "Constitutional Sheriff" candidate, Pennington.   I hope he's not the one the GOP is looking at as King's replacement.

Benita Phillips , with her "serve and protect" nursing background, would probably do at least a good a job as Sheriff as any of the candidates with more law enforcement experience – she needs to ramp up her website and facebook pages if she wants a shot at being elected.

There will be many surprises this November – who knows, she may be one of them.

          1. No, Pennington was defeated in the primary against King.  The mainstream Republicans do not want him.  Benita is a nice lady, but would not fare well against an opponent with law-enforcement experience.  She will not be a November surprise.

Duke, with all due respect to Benita, I regard her as a wasted vote.  You're welcome to waste yours; I'm not going to waste mine.

      3. Who's running against him?   Apparently no one.  The Dems did not field a candidate.  There are some petition candidates in the running, but that's it.  Can Tanc establish residency in Mesa County and seize the Constitution Party line to rescue the Mesa GOP as he did for the state GOP 4 years ago……  (He has Joe Arpaio as his role model.)

      1. Cook –  I put the allaregreen extension on my Firefox browser, and it has slowed it way the heck down. I'm going to uninstall it. I do my own research quickly enough.

        1. That's OK  Mamaj. I use Chrome and it doesn' seem to have done it any harm. You're clever and resourceful enough to do your own reseach. Not everyone (such as I) is. Just wanted to to offer a little boost to those who need it.

  3. From The Hill: Colorado Shows New Path in Climate Solutions

Senator Mark Udall was at the tip of this spear: the bi-partisan co-chair with Speaker Lola Spradley in the 2004 Amendment 37 campaign, he led a tough fight against the fossil fuel interests in Colorado. On election night, Colorado's clean energy advocates were victorious, even after being wildly outspent by our opponents Tri-State Generation and Transmission, Colorado Rural Electric Association and Intermountain Rural Electric Association (IREA).

Not only was Amendment 37 shunned by the rural electric community, but also by then State Representative Gardner and State Senator Greg Brophy.  For that matter, the entire Republican caucus.

In 2006, then-candidate Bill Ritter built upon the foundation we laid two years previous in his gubernatorial campaign, touting the era of the "New Energy Economy". The collective vision of Udall and Ritter has created a great deal of prosperity to rural Colorado. Today, over $5 billion in wind investments have been made in eastern Colorado. The beneficiaries are both rural and urban alike: rural communities with billions in new tax base; Front Range urban consumers with a very cheap source of power. The global leader in wind energy, Vestas, has created more than 4,000 good paying, Front Range jobs.

It's worthy to note that during the 2006 gubernatorial race, the Colorado Rural Electric Association didn't commit a single dime to the Ritter campaign, summarily dismissing the value to its members. The entirety of their donations went to Bob Beauprez. It wasn't until after the election was won by Ritter that they showed up, hat-in-hand, with a campaign donation.

That is some real leadership in action.

If you don't think elections matter, you're not paying attention. We have so much pent up potential in the Centennial state to demonstrate – and lead – the global energy transition (that will happen with or without us).

  4. For folks interested in the progress of fracking-related initiatives, here's what remains (thanks Denver Post)

    Polis backed::

    #88 – minimum 2,000 feet setbacks.

#89 – an environmental "bill of rights"  Allows local laws to supercede state laws if they are more protective of the environment and vice versa.

What I like to call the Lotus plan:

#75 – A lot broader.  Looks like local communities could prevent any sort of business they don't like.  I'm guessing here, but this one looks like it would be unconstitutional.

    From the Great Satans themselves:

#121 – No soup for you!  No severance money or other revenues related to production if your municipality has banned, suspended, or enacted a moratorium.

#137 – It's hard out here for a pimp.  Ballot measurer require fiscal impact statements.

    1. Thanks, Pcat. I do have a question you may be able to help with. If there are "Great Satans", are there also "OK Satans", and "Fair-to Middling Satans"?  Just wondering.

      1. To be honest, I've only ever heard of a Great Satan.  I don't know if there's a scale of the Satans.  Perhaps it ranges from the nice-to-kittens-and-puppies-but-sometimes-grumpy Satan to OMG WTF Ginormous Satan! with Great Satan somewhere above the midpoint.

  5. Udall may not be jopining Obama at Cheeseman Park tomoroow but he's not shy about taking on the horrible Hobby Lobby decision.

Senate Democrats are expediting legislation that would override the Supreme Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case and compel for-profit employers to cover the full range of contraception for their employees, as required by the Affordable Care Act.

The bill, which is co-authored by Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.), would ban for-profit companies from refusing to cover any federally guaranteed health benefits for religious reasons, including all 20 forms of contraception detailed in the Affordable Care Act. It would preserve the contraception mandate's current exemption for churches and accommodation for non-profit religious organizations, such as certain hospitals and schools.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/08/hobby-lobby-override_n_5568320.html

    1. And when it gets fillibustered in the Senate or ignored by the House, Repugnants can say that they had their chance to repeal it by the Democratic process and it was beaten fair and square, adding legitimacy to the SCOTUS decision.  It doesn't move the middle to our side.
