What's up with conservatives and the Ten Commandments?

Charlton Heston.
Charlton Heston.

Why are the 10 Commandments so attractive to conservatives that talk-radio host Hugh Hewitt doesn't blink an eye when gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez says we should "go back" to the 10 Commandments to restore "some order in society."

Beauprez: "That's why God gave Moses those 10 Commandments, wasn't it, to keep some order in society. And I think that's what we've got to go back to."

Beauprez brought up the Commandments as part of his solution to the immigration tragedy along the border.

If I were Hewitt, I'd have asked how not coveting they neighbor's wife, not using the lord's name in vain, and not being an atheist would help the teenage migrants.

Worse is the free pass from real reporters that a candidate for U.S. Senate, Rep. Cory Gardner, gets for his support of "public posting the 10 Commandments."

It's one thing for Beauprez to push moral fortitude via the Commandments; it's another for Gardner to endorse state sponsorship of religious material.

Where does Gardner want such postings? Courts? Schools? DMV? He deserves to be asked.

    1. I think ithat second commandment reads:

Thou shalt not limit any guns for me. Neither mine ammunition, nor mine magazines, nor shalt thou check my background, but shall stockpile weapons forever and ever, amen.

      Sorry to be sacreligious, y'all.angel#notsorry

  1. As often as the 10 commandments gets thrown around, I would love a reporter or someone else ask a politician to recite all 10. They don't even have to be in order, just recite all 10 (bonus points if they can recite them in order)

      1. And good news for omnivores in the originals. The Hebrew word translates to "murder" rather than "kill" so we don't all have to become fruitarians.

        1. Hey baby, there's only one, the one handed to Moses in the the Torah.  Y'all are welcome to copy or revise, but them's the ones. Now I just have to ask a Rabbi if they appear in multiple places with slight differences in the Torah, like so much of the rest of that stuff.

                    1. I read that as a "Shabbes guy", the first two times. Either spelling, very interesting.

          1. Pshah . . . try convincing today's fundamentalist ilk that any Jew's gonna have authoritative understanding of real America's Ten Commandments . . .

. . . but if you do know somebody who wants  to spill the beans on where the Ark's being hidden, well . . .

  2. You know that Catholics have one version of the Ten Commandments and other religions have other verisons.  Which one would get posted by Beauprez….probably the Catholic one….

  3. I always chuckle a bit when posting the 10 commandments comes up since invariably the proposal involves some fancy engraving of images in a public place. It's all so weirdly fractal.

    1. Back in the 60s when my family's progressive Reconstructionist synagogue put a sculpture of Moses in the lobby it almost caused a riot.  And half of us ate pork (not at synagogue, of course) so we were hardly super observant but a sculpture in a synagogue just seemed like asking for the place to be struck by lightning and burned to the ground.
