Unemployment Below 6% for First Time Since 2008

  • by: Colorado Pols

As CNN Money reports, there's plenty of good news in the last jobs report before the November election:

The nation's unemployment rate fell below 6% in September for the first time in six years.

The rate came in at 5.9%, while employers added 248,000 jobs last month…

…The "drop out" factor has been a problem during the recovery, but the recent decrease in the unemployment rate, which stood at 7.2% a year ago, is due more to Americans landing jobs than giving up. Employers have added 2.6 million people to their payrolls since last September.

This is obviously important news for candidates up and down the ballot, but it is particularly important for Gov. John Hickenlooper, whose primary message for re-election has revolved around economic growth.

  1. The point is not whether the economy is improving , but how long it has taken to improve while Democrats choke the life out of the recovery with job killing taxes, fees, and regulations. We could have roared back from the great recession, not limped. Republicans know how to make the trains run on time.

    1. OMG, you truly are an asshole of massively epic proportions.

Wanna see who really held back the economy from roaring back?

      Find the closest mirror.

You people are seriously mentally ill — and I mean that clinically. You've lost all touch with reality whatsoever.

      1. Their formula for keeping the trains running on time happens to be the exact formula plantation owners used to keep their cotton gins running.

    2. And if I recall correctly, you muttonhead, the last guy credited with "making the trains run on time" was the fascist Mussolini.

      Birds of a feather.

          1. Moldy's new nickname should be Baghbad Bob.  He's always winning and the glorious Republican Party will completely vanquish and destroy their partners in Democracy any day now.

He could also be a case study in 1984 Orwellian thinking where black is white and white is black.  I bet the little shit would be orgasmicly ecstatic if the economy was performing as badly as it did during the Bush years.  He hates our country and hopes it fails whenever Republicans are in authoritarian control  What a laughable buffoon.

Keep it up Bob.  You really are annihilating the people you perceive to be your mortal evil enemies in your own mind.  Reminds me of a brainwashed ISIS terrorist who wants to behead and kill everyone who isn't one of them.  Get a clue asshole.  This is America.  There is no us and them.  There is only we and we need to work together to build a better America and world.  I'm not your mortal enemy.

      1. Bingo! THERE is GOP Teabagger Economics in full control. And nearly everyone involved with implementing it is about to be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a damned rail.

As I said, the extent of the mass mental illness sweeping the Teabag Party really needs to be looked at seriously. I think these people are becoming dangerous. They've lost all connection to anything even remotely resembling reality.

    3. Sorry. That doesn't fly. It would be improving a lot faster without GOTP obstruction. To compare and contrast, please compare economic recovery in Dem controlled Colorado to Republican controlled Kansas, where all your favorite policies are operational. And you side's far right Governor is about to be kicked out because he promises more of the same. Many of the kickers? Prominent Republicans. Sucks for you, doesn't it?

But it's not all bad news. When Hick is reelected you will continue to benefit from not having a wacko rightie like BWB for Governor, doing his best to screw it all up in the service of your completely failed and discredited ideology. Really kind of best case scenario for you. You'll get to benefit and whine about it. Maybe some day you'll even escape the Borg, little modster.wink

      1. I now doubt it (Zippy's ability to escape The Borg), BC. The outrageous, despicable bizarro-world statement he/she/it made above — denying ANY CREDIT to President Obama for saving our economy and putting an end to the Bush Recession, while attempting to blame Democrats for the treasonous, recovery-stifling actions of the GOP — indicates to me that he is too far gone to salvage, ever.

        1. The denying any credit thing reminds me. Remember back when only months into Obama's first term the righties were already yammering about when are Dems going to stop blaming everything on GW?  Obama was already supposed to be responsible for the economic collapse, the collapse of Iraq and the entire region and all the other negatives at that point.  None of it was supposed to be left over from the GW's 8 years at all.

Now the same people are yammering that Obama should by no means be considered responsible for any of the progress made in the past 6 years. None of it. And despite what they're saying, there's been quite a lot, no thanks to their self proclaimed dedication to the principle that anything that causes failure for Obama is good, even if it means failure for the whole country and even if it's failure to put into place policies from their own think tanks if Obama wants those policies too.

Actually causing failure and pain for the whole country was a good thing, all part of the plan, according to this principle because it would hurt people so much, they'd make Obama a one term President.  One term for Obama was their tippy toppiest priority. The economy and all that jobs jobs jobs lip service be damned. And they're still at it out of, I don't know, pure spite? It's not like they're going to get a veto proof majority no matter what happens in this election. Seems to me, whatever they gain they're just cruising for major buyer's remorse in 2016, just like 2008.

    4. PS. I think you'll find the economy improving is the important point. Remember the famous are you better off question? Remember "It's the economy stupid"? The economy actually does matter which is why BWB keeps trying to pretend it's getting worse and needs rescuing when it so clearly doesn't. He doesn't really have the presence to carry off the whole "These are not the droids you're looking for thing" though.

    5. "Republicans know how to make the trains run on time."

Given the context and history of that phrase, it's nice of you to remove the mask and admit that Republicans are simply fascists.

    6. More Great Obama Economic News!

Dems surely to pick up seats in Senate and House.

Everything is peachy, except the reason behind the unemployment number going down is discouraged potential workers giving up.

            1. Good ones!

i also like "Heckle and Jeckle"

Unlike Bugs Bunny, who retaliates against a foe only after repeated provocation, their comic aggression is often unprovoked, and in a number of Heckle and Jeckle cartoons (Moose on the Loose, Free Enterprise, The Power of Thought, Hula Hula Land) their foes win in the end.

        1. It also is make up of the disouraged who have given up, people who are underemployed, in part time jobs.

If the economy was so great, how come nobody feels it?

The voters don't or the Dems wouldn't be getting killed.

            1. Spell that backwards for Einstein.  Skippy has the ewe's back legs  tucked firmly in his boots. (which is still illegal in Oklahoma I might add).

              1. HA! Kinda makes you wonder whats' been going on down there in Bible-thumpin,' God-fearin,' blood-red GOTP Oklahoma, doesn't it?

Red State Thirteenth Commandment: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's livestock — and we ain't talkin' rustlers here!

          1. You and your puppet masters don't care about the people who are still hurting.  You and the right never spoke one word about U6 notions of underemployment, discouragement, or marginal attachment until you realized that "unemployment" (the U3 measure) was no longer a useful tool to bludgeon the black president.  Once (if) you’re back in power, you’ll never talk about it again.

You and the right fail to acknowledge the folks who do “feel” the uptick in the economy, the rich, who apparently are also the real victims in all this.  Burdened by the desire for their lessers to engage in class warfare, which seems to consist largely of a disintegrating middle and ever-growing lower class saying “WTF?” when they see where money goes in our economy.  The poor “job creators” whose largess towards the 47% is so callously spurned by workers who demand things like “benefits” or “regular hours” or “a living wage.”

The reason that so few folks feel like the economy is getting better, is because it isn’t for most.  Real wages have gone down as corporations, not content with simply enormous profits, drive their bottom lines lower and lower.  Fewer jobs are offered as full time, as it’s more profitable to offer part time work on irregular schedules, with early dismissal when a few too few cups of coffee get sold that hour.  Of course, this makes it harder for folks to pick up a second job, you know, to eat, but that isn’t our job creators’ problem, no sir.  And employers certainly aren’t still riding the backs of fewer workers, demanding increased production for no increase in pay rather than hiring more and giving their folks a break.  After all, when the ones they have can’t take it anymore they’ll die or quit.

          2. The bottom chart shows a nearly monotonic increase in the number of people not in the workforce through expansions, recessions, and even depression.  So, quite obviously, what is driving that is not employment.  It's retirement, you moron.

              1. That doesn't make you saddoes it, Davie? It makes melaugh.                                                                        Sorry, all. It's Friday night aD I've got a cold. A little silliness makes me feel better.

          3.

If the economy was so great, how come nobody feels it?

Many people are feeling it. Work is picking up for lots of folks and I am so damned busy I can't get to all the jobs I am being asked to do. My family economy is booming just now, no thanks to the one-percenters you worship.

President Obama and the American people are turning this thing around in spite of all the effort put into trying to make him fail by GOTP assholes like you. You have no credibility, no conscience, and no hope of ever being an adult.

No one cares what you think.

          4. Helping those discouraged out of the job market? You mean by raising the minimum wage and mandating employers provide health insurance? You ready to sign on to THAT Skippy?

      1. Perhaps you'd like to comment on the LATEST 9News debunking of your mentally ill cabal's LATEST lie-filled smear ad over on the other thread, eh, dickhead?

No? Didn't think so, you cowardly, wimpy pantywaist POS.

      2. Wow ACHole, discounting the 2.6 million jobs added and the fact that us boomers leaving the workforce to retire accounting for 3/4ths of reduction in the participation rate doesn't register for you does it?

But a group that includes leading Wall Street and Federal Reserve economists says the drop in workforce participation is about demographics, not the health of the economy. Mostly, it's about Baby Boomers.

About 76% of those leaving the workforce in 2013 last year represented people over age 55 who say they don't want jobs, the Labor Department estimates.

"Arithmetically, the Boomers will keep pushing (participation) down done for another 15 years," said Dean Maki, economist at investment bank Barclays, who argues Boomers' retirements mean current job growth can reduce unemployment. "We should get used to it."

        http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/01/12/labor-force-participation/4413811

Since nobody here believes your BS, why don't you go to Kansas and help out Brownack.

Oh wait, they don't buy GOP voodoo economics there anymore either.

        1. These filthy bottom-feeding rats would literally sooner die than allow the scary black interloper in their White House to get credit for so much as one of the many fantastic, amazing, wonderful things he's risked his neck to do for this country.

          They are racist, anti-American swine.

    7. If by "make the trains run on time" you mean "a virtual train full of American jobs from our shores to destinations in far away lands", I couldn't agree more.  "Just in time" to make the real moochers, the "47%-ers" another pile of billions.  (have you ever met a billionaire that thought he had 'enough'?)

    1. Bowman, you are an Idiot.

We were losing manufacturing jobs well before 2001.  2001 was the advent of offshoring of It-enabled jobs due to the deregulation of the telecommunications industry in India shortly before 2000.

Are you really that stupid or are you just trying to act like a fool?

        1. I don't read Piss Ants posts anymore but my guess would be no. From past posts he clearly just  takes a  quick glance which is why so much of what he posts and links to actually supports his opponents' arguments. Pretty convenient.

      1. The impotent little Chickenhawk sure does like to puff out his sunken chest and talk tough when his "facts" are shown to be total bullshit, doesn't he?
