  1. If Jesus comes back this weekend, will he praise Republicans and their phony “religious freedom” bills, their bloodthirst for war with Iran , their complete hatred and disdain for our president? Will he thank Dr Chaps and the morons who voted him into office for their spiritual dedication?

    1. I was reluctant to watch David T8’s Eurovision videos, but finally did. The first one, “Millions of Voices” has the catchiest tune. Good, uplifting pop songs (in English!) and ..no cleavage in sight..

Did you give something up for Lent, David?

      1. Just proof I truly listen to them for the music. The occasional cleavage is just an additional benefit cool.

I thin if Armenia can figure out how to stage their song to get the same message across as in the video above, they could have a giant win.

        1. What is the Armenian message? Owning one’s history? Not being anti-semitic? It was a tad confusing.

Of course, the one I liked (a million voices) was also pretty generic. Was it pro-democracy and pro free-speech, or just a statement of support for really cute kids in a variety of colors?

The Romanian one was the most touching, I thought, and probably the most realistic.

That is pop music – nothing too deep or too heavy. But I just wondered what you thought the messages were.

          1. Ok, Eurovision does not allow political messages in the songs. And the Armenian Genocide is a giant political message, especially as Turkey & Azerbaijan both deny it every happened.

So Armenia has a non-political message of “don’t deny.” Non-political because they don’t say specifically what should not be denied. And the group is individual singers of Armenia descent from all the continents of the world. People who are members of the Armenia diaspora, said diaspora caused by the genocide. And the video where people disappear from the picture, that’s the deaths from the genocide.

If you know the back-story, which most in Europe do, the whole thing makes for a very powerful message. And yet, officially it’s non-political because it’s never specifically stated.

    1. Excellent article. And GOTP legislators keep adding fictions to legislation such as demanding doctors warn their female patients about fictional risks of abortion. Not that there are no risks. Every procedure involves some degree of risk. But this law specifically demands that doctors warn their patients of demonstrably fictional risks.  In Florida, the other side of the coin is that doctors aren’t allowed to so much as mention any real, nonfictional risks associated with leaving loaded guns laying around and the Governor doesn’t want anyone in government to so much as whisper the words “climate change”. 1984 is here courtesy of 21st century Republican conservatives. And the two cited above by denverco and Zap, showing a bit of independence from the Borg, represent a minority still too tiny to have any significant effect.

Happy Passover and Easter everyone. If I do say so myself (and I do) my Seder brisket this year was the most perfectly executed of my entire career as a second gen American born Jewish mom, old enough to remember Seders and Friday night dinners with the extended immigrant family, my grandparents and great aunts and uncles, may they all rest in blissful peace in Paradise with my beautiful late brother, the sweetest big brother in this world, the next or any other in any time space continuum. Also my recently departed cat. His life long companion cat misses him as much as we do. She’s driving us nuts.

Once we were slaves and now we’re free. L’Chaim. To life.

      1. Sounds like a trip to the MaxFund may be in order, B.C. A kitten to boss around would make your tomcat feel like the king of the house. Happy Passover, and don’t forget one of my  favorite holidays on Monday: Half-price on Chocolate Bunnies Day!

        1. Good thought but our remaining cat is a she, I don’t want o commit to starting from scratch with a whole new kitten (we might like to travel for more than 5 day sometime) and don’t think she’d accept a mature cat. She’ll just have to content herself with lots of attention from us.

  2. BTW. I’m sure poor people spending their benefits on cruise ships is an urgent problem that failing, flailing, all GOTP Kansas, a state that can’t keep its schools functioning for the full school year anymore and with a dismal economic and jobs profile due to discredited conservative austerity/trickle down economic policy, urgently needs to address. And I’m sure the legislators all believe themselves to have superior Christian family values as Christians celebrate Easter. Unbelievable but true:

Even more unbelievable? Conservative Republicans are still claiming that slashing taxes, mainly on the very rich “job creators” (seriously?)will create more revenue by stimulating the economy, a notion about as credible at this late date as the existence of the Easter Bunny.

    1. First heard about this on NPR less than two weeks ago. Then it made brief mention on network media. Good to see the results of some scrutiny. This was where so much of that Thai imported shrimp was coming from.  Still don’t think I’ll buy shrimp labeled from Thailand for a good long time. Happy Passover indeed.

  3. Could it be that most Americans don’t hate Obama so much they’d prefer to go to war  just to stick it to him? Haven’t seen anything like this from Gallup in a very, very long time. This is today’s.

President Obama Job Approval  Gallup  Approve 50, Disapprove 46 Approve +4

  4. Did you all hear about Kansas passing a bill that Kansas welfare recipients will be unable to get more than $25.00 per day in benefits.  The odious bill states that a 3 person family receiving the maximum benefit would have to go to the ATM more than a dozen times to get the full benefit, which would be whittled away by an $.85 cent fee for each withdrawal after the first one.  The provision makes it nearly impossible for a recipient who does not have a checking account to pay rent.

It also prohibits recipients from spending their benefits at certain types of businesses such as cruise ships.  Just imagine how that is going to bankrupt the cruise industry.

These people hate poor people and for the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would ever vote for the Republican party.

    1. Never underestimate a Republican’s interest in tormenting poor people. They’d be thrilled if we could just return to the good old days of the Industrial Revolution (and everything that entails).

      1. BTW, it’s even worse than you mention . . .

. . . when was the last time you saw an ATM that dispensed $5 bills????   Sneaky cool, huh!?!

        1. So true on all points.  I keep thinking and hoping that the poor will eventually have enough and revolt at the ballot box.  They don’t realize what a powerful voting block they could be if they would just show up at the ballot box in large numbers.  When enough vote, those useless politicians listen.

          1. But it will take a boatload of community organizers to get the poor to revolt. Now, brothers and sisters, do we all understand why Republicans have worked so hard to give community organizers a bad name?!!

    2. Guess they hate poor people even more than they hate gay people. Not more than they hate Obama, though. Obama could cure cancer and they’d be up in arms over the terrible thing he did, maybe putting all those cancer specialists out of work or something.

Just how do poor people get on those cruise ships to spend their food stamps there in the first place? Do cruise companies take food stamps to pay for tickets? How the hell many food stamps would it take? What’s the matter with Kansas voters that they elect these snake oil salesmen? They elected an all Tea Party Republican legislature and Governor and their state is going down the tubes. Can’t even keep schools open for a full term. Hope they’re happy.

  5. Looks like the Douglas County GOTP and State Sen. Marble aren’t getting any more smarter:

Last week, the satirical National Report posted a fake story entitled “Colorado Pot Shop Accepting Food Stamps – Taxpayer Funded Marijuana for Welfare Recipients.” Other stories on the site include equally false items such as “Colorado Pot Shop Attempts To Disarm Citizens With ‘Weed for Guns’ Buyback Program,” “How Obama’s EPA Is Taking Away Your 2nd Amendment,” and “U.S. Caves to Iran In Nuclear Deal. Sharia Law Now to be Taught in U.S. Universities. Qurans to be Placed in Motel Rooms.” A conservative news site picked up the story, apparently duped. The Douglas County Republican Committee, also apparently believing the story real, linked to the report on its Twitter feed last Tuesday.A day later, [state Sen. Vicki] Marble’s bill was filed in the state Senate. Marble did not immediately respond to a ThinkProgress inquiry about her rationale, but two of her co-sponsors did. Rep. Dan Nordberg (R) observed that while “To my knowledge, there have been no incidences at marijuana establishments in the two weeks they’ve been open,” the bill is “consistent with the intent of Amendment 64, which is to ‘regulate marijuana like alcohol.’” Since the prohibition applies to liquor stores, he notes, it should thus also apply to marijuana vendors.

  6. Tolerance for different belief systems is at the very core and foundation of American thought. Claims of persecution (War on Christmas!! Sharia Law OMG!!) are never proven, and they are always a disguised attack on this first American principle of tolerance.

Vicki Marble sponsored that bill last year, but she hasn’t gotten any smarter in the interim.
