    1. Romans 13

1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

4 For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing.

7 Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

      1. I used to be a church-going Christian, then one day I decided to read the Bible from cover to cover.  It took me 3 years to get through it and by the end, I had completely lost my religious beliefs.  As your excerpt from Romans demonstrates, it is a ridiculous collection of nonsense, and people who believe it is the word of God must never have read it.

I did like the book of Ezra, which I believe doesn't mention God.  It's basically about an open records request; since I'm a government lawyer, it resonated with me.

        1. Well, my favorite part of the Bible is the Song of Songs.

"Thy breasts are like twin roe, which feed among the lilies.  Thou art fair, my love, thou art fair."

             Amen.

    2. From the NYT… (sorry, these are just too good to pass up) #youcantfixstupid

“She’s a hero,” said Florene Whitt, 68, of Morehead, a retired housecleaner who is related to Ms. Davis by marriage. “She’s standing strong against the gays. And I agree with her. The Bible says husband and wife. Not two women, and not two stupid men. This world has become so sick that it is ruining our young generation.”

      1. 1) Love Whitt's use of  "the gays"

        2) I bet Ms. Davis is related to half of Kentucky by marriage between her multiple marriages and the collective marriages of all of her husbands. Her kids probably should move out of state to find at least distant cousins to marry.

      2. …and it's completely lost on poor Florene that she lives in Morehead, KY?  Can't you just picture her in the local beauty shop, ala Steel Magnolias, yacking about the ghey, the War on Coal and ObummerCare?

        Bless her little heart.

    3. Leviticus

      Eating fat (3:17)

Letting your hair become unkempt (10:6)

Eating an animal which doesn't both chew cud and has a divided hoof (rabbit, pig, possum) (11:4-7)

Going to church within 33 days after giving birth to a boy (12:4)

      Lying (19:11)

Mistreating foreigners – "the foreigner residing among you must be treated as a native born" (19:33-34)

Selling land permanently (I'm guessing as county clerk she records warranty deeds and perpetual conservation easements) (25:23)

      1. So two things.

Isn't it time to admit that nobody obeys every rule in the bible, not even the strictest orthodox Jews or fundamentalist Christians? It's completely cafeteria style so there's no justifiable reason why one person's or group's selections should be forced on any other person or group.

Let's stop confusing religious freedom with forced accommodation contrary to constitutional law. If your religion doesn't allow you to perform the duties of a particular job than you need to find another job. A tax payer funded government position as a clerk isn't going to work for you if you can't perform it according to the law because of your religious beliefs. Find something else.

And for Ms Davis… marriages don't always work out but if you're so religious and Christian and all you're supposed to enter marriage at least intending it's going to be non-adulterous and until death do you part. At the very least you’re supposed to try a lot harder than you apparently do to keep it that way.

      2. We can't eat fat? That's a good one.The Eastern European Jewish cooking at Bubby's house was pretty much entirely schmaltz (rendered chicken fat) based. Jewish lard. Jewish chopped liver is unthinkable without it . U-n-t-h-i-n-k-a-b-l-e I say! Just Frenchified pate. Sure, modern Jewish cook book authors keep trying to convert these foods to health conscious versions but the hardcore faithful will resist to the end of time! Not to be confused with End Times. Not our thing. Schmaltz forever! They're going to have to pry my schmaltzy chopped liver out of my cold dead hands. No matter what the cardiologists and Leviticus say!

    4. That really is the best part of this saga so far, Michael. She's been summoned to court tomorrow to explain why she shouldn't be held in contempt of court for her refusal to issue the licences. She's been turned away at every level, including SCOTUS, which en bank and without comment, denied her request for a stay.

      1. Do you suppose her lawyer is her second-cousin who's married to her half-brother (the son of her thrice-divorced Aunt Weezy (who is the daughter of third-cousin Jimmy and that hussy Betty Sue who used to work behind the cash register at the PigglyWiggly?))

It is indeed a slippery slope…

  1. OK. Who's the bigger idiot? The congressman who thought an appropriate way to talk to second graders about the role of the veto was to use a bill concerning current nuclear negotiations with Iran and to make sure the kids knew that children "your age" ( once again, second grade) are being used as suicide bombers or the principal who wrote the inexplicably perky, breezy and not terribly literate letter to parents attempting to explain away what their "kiddos" had been subjected to in school after receiving parental complaints? There is no wrong answer:

It started as an innocent civics lesson, but it ended with Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) chipping away at the innocence of youth.

Second- and third-graders at the San Tan Charter School in Gilbert, Arizona, were treated last Friday to a visit from the congressman to learn about the political process. Things took a dark turn, however, when Salmon opted to use current events to illustrate how vetoes work, KPHO reports.

The congressman brought up the current nuclear negotiations with Iran. He then transitioned into a talk about nuclear weapons, which in turn led him to ask the classroom full of young kids if they are aware of child suicide bombers.

"The congressman … made some inappropriate comments about 'Do you know what a nuclear weapon is? Do you know that there are schools that train children your age to be suicide bombers?'" parent Scott Campbell recalled to KPHO. "After school my daughter was very concerned and said to me she actually didn't even know what suicide was and was very afraid."

In a letter sent home to the parents of the 45 students, San Tan's principal, Kristofer Sippel, laid out the extent of the conversation — including attempts to steer the lesson away from the Islamic State and back to more kid-friendly territory, The Washington Post reports:

Yesterday Congressman Matt Salmon visited your kiddos’ classroom where they discussed the process they had learned about how a bill becomes a law. During this conversation, the Congressman shared a bill that will be going through the process with regards to nuclear warfare down to the terrorist trained and the age of the kiddos that are trained. This conversation lasted about three minutes to which I interjected that we had time for a few questions in hops to divert the conversation. At this point, the questions changed to a different topic; however, after a few questions the topic again turned to ISIS and terrorists; at that point, Ms. Kisler did a great job and interrupted the Q & A to thank the Congressman for coming to the classroom.

  2. From the "This is not a surprise" Department — Poll shows that if Obama favors it, Republicans are agin' it!  But if Trump sezs "Yes!" then Repubs like it too frown

(this includes universal healthcare and the keeping Iran deal)

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-republicans-democrats-poll_55e5fbb8e4b0c818f6196a82?utm_hp_ref=politics

So basically, the best way to defeat the NRA and RMGO and get guns off the street would be for Obama to come out in favor of giving every man, woman and child a gun.
