Get More Smarter on Monday (Oct. 5)

MoreSmarterLogo-300x218The Broncos are undefeated, and the Rockies are finally done flailing away. It’s time to Get More Smarter with Colorado Pols. If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example).

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► State Sen. Tim Neville is officially in the race for U.S. Senate, but that hasn’t prevented Republicans from continuing to seek out another potential candidate for 2016. As you can tell from this story in the Loveland Reporter-Herald, people are just throwing darts at walls at this point. Heck, things are so fluid that Dan Caplis is even doing his annual “maybe I should run for Senate” thing.

But back to the Loveland Reporter-Herald…here’s the best sentence of the entire story:

[Justin] Smith said in a previous  Reporter-Herald story that if elected, the issues he plans to tackle are the economy, national safety and international policy.

Why doesn’t Smith just say this instead: “If elected, I promise to focus on issues.”

► Vice President Joe Biden may decide on a 2016 Presidential bid as soon as this weekend. As Politico reports, confidants of Biden are starting to think he’s leaning toward getting into the race.

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) expired last week when Congress did what it does best: Nothing. As the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports, Colorado Senators Michael Bennet (D-Denver) and Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) are big supporters of LWCF, as are most members of Congress, but there is a holdup in Utah:

According to the Center for Western Priorities conservation group, more than half of members in the U.S. House of Representatives support the program. But it says U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, “is holding LWCF hostage,” having vowed to block the program unless reforms are made, but not introducing a bill or allowing consideration of the program’s renewal.

In a statement released Sept. 25, Bishop countered that it’s special interests who “seek to hijack LWCF to continue to expand the federal estate and divert even more monies away from localities.”

Wait, you mean a Republican Congressman is blocking a federal program without offering any sort of alternative legislation? What are the odds?

►Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton announced her “Colorado leadership team” for 2016. You can probably guess most of the names on the list.

► According to the Boulder Daily Camera, Boulder almost hosted a event with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is seeking the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2016.

► Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper will lead a 52-person contingent of government and business leaders from Colorado 0n a two-week trade trip through Asia and the Middle East (China, Japan, Turkey, and Israel). Those are some serious frequent flier miles being racked up.

Colorado may yet gitmo prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. Yeah, we said “gitmo prisoners” — it wasn’t that bad of a pun, was it?

► The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel has an interesting look at how Colorado ended up in its current fiscal mess (thanks, TABOR!).

OTHER LINKS YOU SHOULD CLICK

No, the earth is not going through a “cooling period” and 99% of scientists are still sure that man-made Climate Changes is occurring.

► Tea Party members in Colorado are still mad at Republicans.

ICYMI

► We need your help in naming a new feature for Colorado Pols.

  1. Not bad at all.  May yet gitmo prisoners. I like it. Also don't know why anyone would object since we've had other terrorists here for so many years with no incidents. But then I'm not a mindless fear mongering rightie so….
