Is this what MLK would have wanted?

(Um… – Promoted by Colorado Pols)

Over the weekend, Colorado GOP Vice Chair Derrick Wilburn Facebooked the photo below from the MLK marade. Willburn, who was elected by to his Republican Party post last year, is the founder of American Conservatives of Color, whose slogan is “Truth Transcends Color.”

Wilburn: A few minutes ago waiting for the MLK March to begin. How many times have you seen two banners like this in the same place at the same time? This is what MLK would have wanted, standing side by side.

  1. Yes.  The critical "what banners get carried in the parade" part that King never even dared dream would happen.

Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for rights. And so just as I said, we aren't going to let dogs or water hoses turn us around. We aren't going to let any injunction turn us around. We are going on.  But first, get the banners!

  2. Republicans often get this wrong, only because there is a propaganda machine dedicated to getting it wrong. The myth is that Martin Luther King, JR, (the one we usually think of as MLK, the civil rights leader) was a Republican.

That was his father, the Reverend Doctor King , Senior. MLK Senior was a registered Republican, because at that time Democrats in the South wouldn't register black voters. Even he voted and campaigned for Democratic JFK for President in 1960.  Said his grandson, MLK III:

In a 2008 Associated Press story, King’s son and namesake Martin Luther King III said:"It is disingenuous to imply that my father was a Republican. He never endorsed any presidential candidate, and there is certainly no evidence that he ever even voted for a Republican. It is even more outrageous to suggest he would support the Republican Party of today, which has spent so much time and effort trying to suppress African American votes in Florida and many other states.

But why let facts get in the way of a good meme?
