Get More Smarter on Wednesday (Feb. 3)

  • by: Colorado Pols

MoreSmarterLogo-SnowmanAccording to a source with the Ted Cruz campaign, all of the other GOP Presidential candidates are dropping out and supporting him. That’s not true? Oh. It’s time to Get More Smarter with Colorado Pols. If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example).

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► Donald Trump conceded an Iowa caucus victory to Ted Cruz on Monday, but now His Hairness is alleging fraud and calling for a new election in Iowa. Before you dismiss this story, consider Trump’s “proof” — that the Cruz campaign told caucusgoers that Ben Carson was dropping out of the race (he isn’t…yet). From Politico:

The tweet referred to a report from CNN’s Chris Moody during the caucuses that Ben Carson would take a detour from New Hampshire following Iowa, heading to Florida instead — which some took to mean that Carson was suspending his campaign.

The Cruz campaign then alerted its leaders to the tweet from the CNN reporter but, as Cruz explained in an apology on Tuesday, neglected to send the follow-up tweet in which Moody clarified that the Carson campaign had told him that the retired neurosurgeon was not dropping out of the race but rather just picking up fresh clothes. On Monday night, Carson accused the Cruz campaign of “dirty tricks” but accepted its apology.

Nobody wants to go back to Iowa, obviously, but this is a smart maneuver by Trump to throw some cold water on Cruz before next week’s New Hampshire Primary. Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post explains why it’s so important to pay attention to “dirty tricks” from the Cruz campaign.

► There has been much moaning and complaining over the years about a relative dearth of political news coverage in Colorado, so it’s good to see that Denver’s ABC7 is already digging in with its own political fact-checker, Alan Gathright. From The Denver Channel:

Emily’s List is stoking the abortion debate in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District race with a fundraising email saying Republican incumbent Mike Coffman “co-sponsored a bill to redefine rape.”…

…Emily’s List said that Coffman “co-sponsored a bill to redefine rape.”

The record shows Coffman did co-sponsor the bill to redefine a ban on federal funding for abortions to exempt “forcible rape.”

Yet he later voted to remove the “forcible” modifier from the bill.

Given the totality of his actions on the legislation, we’re rating this claim Mostly True.

Whatever your feelings on this particular issue, it’s a great development for Colorado politics when local news organizations start asking just a few more questions.

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► What do the Iowa caucus results tell us about Colorado’s U.S. Senate race? Pretty much what we’ve already known: It’s not a good year to be a GOP “insider.”

► Republicans in the State Senate are pushing ahead with a plan to un-fund transportation projects in Colorado. As John Frank explains for the Denver Post:

Under the  FASTER law, the state increased vehicle registration fees for three years to raise money for road and bridge improvement projects.

The fees total more than $100 million a year for road projects, with $15 million set aside for state and local transit projects.

Senate Bill 11, sponsored by Sen. Tim Neville, R-Littleton, would end the earmark for transit projects and spend all the fee revenue on state and local road improvements. It would also eliminate the state Division of Transit and Rail.

There’s some quality long-term thinking for you.

► Colorado Democrats could end up playing a significant role in the Democratic Presidential Primary, as the Pueblo Chieftain reports.

The Colorado Independent takes a look at the various methods Republican Senate candidates can use to get their name on the ballot in the June Primary.

► Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul finally saw the writing that has been on the wall for months and dropped out of the Republican race for President.

►Democrats in Congress are calling on Republicans to put a stop to endless investigations of Planned Parenthood. From a press release:

Today, U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) will call for an end to ongoing, politically motivated House and Senate investigations into Planned Parenthood, in light of the many independent investigations across the country that have cleared Planned Parenthood of wrongdoing.

► Congressman Scott Tipton is concerned about a change in accounting standards. As Gary Harmon explains for the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel:

A coming change in accounting standards could do irreversible damage to community banks, U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., said in a letter to the Financial Accounting Standards Board.

An accounting-standards update due to be issued by the board would change the way all lenders set aside reserve funds in anticipation of possible losses.

The board, wrote Tipton and Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., should take “utmost caution” in proceeding because it has the potential to “irreversibly damage community banks’ and credit unions’ ability to continue to adequately serve their customers/members and communities and sustain the economic recovery.”

Zzzzzzzz…wha? Oh, sorry, we fell asleep there for a minute.

► Wondering about the status of “right-to-die” legislation in Colorado. Glad you asked! From the Associated Press:

State Sen. Michael Merrifield is co-sponsoring a right-to-die bill that gets its first hearing on Wednesday before a GOP-controlled Senate committee. Last year, lawmakers from both parties voted against similar legislation, arguing that it facilitates suicide in cases where a diagnosis may be wrong.

A committee in the Democrat-controlled House holds a hearing on the bill on Thursday. Reps. Lois Court of Denver and Joann Ginal of Fort Collins are sponsoring the bill in that chamber.

► Whistle Pigs!

► One of the baker’s dozen of GOP Senate candidates in Colorado seems to think the federal government wants to kill us.

OTHER LINKS YOU SHOULD CLICK

► Liz Cheney, the daughter of former President Vice President Dick Cheney, is taking another shot at running for federal office in Wyoming. As the Huffington Post reports, Liz doesn’t seem to have learned any lessons from her failed Senate bid a few years back — when the “carpetbagger” label dogged her everywhere she went:

Elizabeth Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, will run for Wyoming’s lone House seat as a Republican, she announced Monday night on Facebook — from Virginia.

“At this perilous time,” Cheney wrote, “we must have a strong, conservative voice representing Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives. I am running because I will be that voice.” There was one big problem: Cheney’s post was geotagged — from Alexandria, Virginia. (The geotag has since been removed.)

Perhaps the political universe is trying to tell you something.

► Before you send out that next social media message, it wouldn’t hurt to pull out a calculator to make sure your math is correct.

  1. On the subject of "getting more smarter"….I viewed a report on local TeeVee this morning, reporting that researchers (somewhere…) have discovered that older men who exercise regularly are less likely to fall and hurt themselves….who woulda thunk? I am dumbfounded by this revelation…

    1. Wonder how much the study cost. Perhaps next they can study the connection between older men drinking a dozen adult beverages a day and, conversely, falling down a lot.
