  1. First, of course, go Broncos!

ICYMI, Independence Institute v. Williams (nee Gessler), is making it's way through the courts.  The 10th Circuit came down on the side of reason, upholding Colorado law that requires disclosure of donors for electioneering communications– even if they're so-called "issue ads"– that mention a candidate by name.  Of course, Jon "Did somebody say AFP?  I never said AFP!" Caldara no likey.

This one will head next to the Supreme Court, since there's plenty money behind it.  It will be interesting to see if (a) enough folks want to hear it, that the case is brought up rather than the decision simply being affirmed, and (b), if it is, how Kennedy handles the reality of what he so naively wrought in Citizen's United.

    1. SCOTUS specifically said in Citizens United that they thought Congress should enact full disclosure laws to mitigate their the freedom of money ruling. They'll bounce it, unless either (a) they want to make an attaboy statement to Colorado, or (b) they didn't really mean full disclosure when they said it.

  2. Yesterday, here in the Grand Valley, we were treated to a spectacular, orange and blue, "Bronco sunset"…then, lo..and behold…this morning…a blue and orange "Bronco sunrise"…an omen.

Peyton plays just well enough to complement a smothering Denver defense, the likes of which Cam hasn't seen. Denver 27…Carolina…20

    Go Broncos!

  3. "Unfortunately the use of taxpayer money to line the pockets of rich NFL franchises is not limited to Charlotte and Denver. In fact these wealth transfers dominate the league.  Meyer points out that:

The NFL is by far the most valuable sports team in the world. Team owners do not need taxpayer aid to turn a profit, yet this problem is only growing. Public funding for stadiums completed in the 2000s was 70 percent higher than for those completed in the 1990s. League-wide, about 70 percent of the capital cost of NFL stadiums has been provided by taxpayers, not NFL owners.

If this doesn't qualify as welfare for the rich it is difficult to figure out what would."

  4. Well, just watched the Nuggets beat the Knicks after their miraculous come back to victory game against the Bulls so, whatever happens and even though Butler missed the last half of the Bulls game and the Knicks stink, the day won't be a total loss.  Go Nuggets! Go Broncos but I'm not placing any bets or buying any merch!

      1. Any road win is a good win and any win period is a good win for the Nuggets this season. That said, lots of good things are happening, lots of players showing very promising improvement. Barton gets better and better. So does Jokic. So does Mudiay. Lauvergne played so well for such a long stretch in the 4th with 5 fouls. Gallo has been Gallo. Go Nuggets!

      1. In all the congrats on the podium afterward nobody mentioned Wade Phillips even though it was his defense that handed Manning his fairy tale ending on a silver platter. Manning was pretty much along for the ride this Super Bowl and smart enough to let the defense win it for him this time. Still, a nice fairy tale ending for him as long as he has the sense to recognize it. He did, however, remember to mention that he planned to drink a lot of Budweiser several times. Not terribly subtle, that. Well, congrats all round. Now if our local fans aren't so happy they just have to turn over some cars when the bars let out….

        1. nobody mentioned Wade Phillips

and that is truly a shame…

I was a big fan of his dad, Bum Phillips ( Houston Oilers, 1975-80 ) and I think Wade doesn't get nearly the press he deserves. Of course, the players play the game, but Wade figures out the plan…he deserves as much, or more, credit for this trophy as anyone else.

              1. I saw everybody up on the stage right after but also didn't stick around for all the after hoopla. Saw  the presentation to Mrs. Bowlen, Elway yelling this is for you to Pat. Manning speaking, etc. I heard him acknowledge the D but didn't here him say Wade's name. Then I tuned in to Downton Abbey at 9PM (guilty pleasure, what can I say). I must have missed it too so if he was recognized it wasn't in a very early or prominent way.

If you ask me it would have been much classier for Manning to remember Wade before he remembered to plug Budweiser. Twice. Once in the first on field interview after the game and again on stage.

Despite that sign proclaming this to be the Sheriff's Best Rodeo, it was certainly not Manning's best performance. It was Wade's spectacular defense that carried him over that finish line so he can go out in an Elway style blaze of glory, instead of with the usual washed up QB whimper. That is, if he has a lick of sense. Hope he does. Even though he's a Republican. At least he contributed to Jeb!, bad enough but not as bad as some of the other choices.

He should be sending Wade flowers, chocolates, champagne, taking him out to the finest restaurant in town and maybe throwing in the keys to a very high end car. It could have been a very different and sadder story… aging QB desperately tries one last time and gets smoked.

  5. Such a storybook ending to the season, and perhaps the final chapter in football journey of Peyton Manning.  Not only an excellent player of the game, but a fine person who has graced our community for a brief, but brilliant time.

I'm not even a big football fan, but these last few weeks have been such a pleasure!
