Colorado Senate GOP Blames Obama For Dallas Police Killings

Senate President Bill Cadman.
Senate President Bill Cadman.

Last night’s horrific shooting of multiple police officers assigned to a protest against police brutality in Dallas is a central point of discussion today across America. It’s a time to mourn not just the killings, but the setback such violence against police represents for an honest solution to the related issues of use of force against civilians and easy access to weapons in the United States.

Unless you’re the official mouthpiece of the Colorado Senate Republicans.

We pray today not just for the victims of these murders, and for all the loved ones and colleagues of the dead or injured in Dallas, but for this great but troubled country, which hasn’t seen domestic upheavel [sic-Pols] like this since the 1960s.

Barack Obama came into office hailed as a great “uniter,” who would heal old wounds and bring Americans together. On that count, too, he must be judged a failure, as evidenced by the division, fear, lawlessness and almost total lack of “domestic tranquility” he leaves in his wake. [Pols emphasis]

If you’re thinking Senate President Bill Cadman’s press office should have stopped at (and spell-checked) the first paragraph, well, suffice to say that we agree. We most certainly cannot see any rational path to blaming the nation’s first African-American President for the larger problem of police brutality in America, which is committed disproportionately against African-Americans. To suggest that President Barack Obama is even peripherally responsible for last night’s attack on police officers in Dallas relies on fundamentally racist presumptions.

In short, to call this response to the Dallas shootings from the Colorado Senate Republicans outrageous is a considerable understatement. It may not quite rate as badly as former Rep. Joe Walsh’s declaration of war, but it’s so far from appropriate the morning after this tragedy that it shocks the conscience in nonpartisan terms.

At the very least, please don’t accuse the gun control folks of “politicizing a shooting” ever again.

  1. They don't ever see the racism in their comments accusing Obama of racism.  It's hard to decide which is worse: They don't know that they are making racists statements or they do and hope that only their base picks up on the dog whistles.  Either they are ignorant racists or conniving racists.  Both are pretty putrid in a "leader".

  2. Which one is it Republicans?

"Obama is a dictator of Satan who will take all your guns and destroy America! His grab for more power must be feared!" OR "Obama is weak and can't protect Americans from violence! His weakness must be feared!"

Pick one. You don't get both.

  3. At least Sean Paige gets a fat (tax funded?? Koch funded??? Who knows???) paycheck for spreading his hate. And who could forget his love affair with Cliven before his hasty AFP twitter deletes and sudden "mutual understanding" that he could no longer work there. Those were white folk drawing down of feds. Totally appropriate, I guess, and not at all divisive.

  4. Jesus Christ. Even Charles C.W. Cooke described blaming Obama and BLM as "ridiculous." It's disquieting that the distance between the Colorado Senate Republicans and a garden variety "RaHoWa"-screaming white supremacist psycho can be traversed so quickly.

  5. It will take years for trust to develop again between communities of color and police.

That relationship is broken. I see only greater militarization of police (more helicopters, more tactical equipment) in response to this. More suspicion, more fear.

Unless there is truly a commitment to community policing, and nobody's funding that in this Congress. That's the only cure. Beat cops who know the people in their neighborhoods, just like Mister Rogers said. Neighbor folks who see the police as problem solvers, not randomly aggressive adversaries.

I'm someone who, in a previous political incarnation, might have once or twice yelled, "Fuck the pigs!" But I pretty quickly grew up and found that my life might depend on someone in blue, as in fact it has once or twice. Now, I scold people who call cops "pigs". I understand that being a cop is being a public servant. Some are terrible public servants. It doesn't negate the sacrifices of others.

Being white, and a middle-aged woman who never drives under the influence, I never get targeted or pulled over. I once drove for six months with an expired license plate. Never got pulled over. Hoopty ride with busted taillights, bumpers hanging off and rattling all over the place, windshield crack'd from side to side? Never got pulled over.

That's a privilege black and brown people don't have. My beautiful blonde daughter , while intoxicated, once cursed and spit at a police officer. Nothing bad happened to her, (not beat up or raped or killed), although she did get arresteI. That's also privilege darker-complected people of her generation never had.

"Black and brown lives matter" is still important to say, because, obviously, to many police, they fricking don't matter. You have to see who has the actual power in the situation.

Sorry, I don't have any neat maxims or action points to conclude with. Just venting. Be safe out there.

    1. I just had a long conversation yesterday with a woman friend who is white. She said practically the same thing. I know from my own experience that the white privilege I have enjoyed and taken for granted for so long is a very real thing.

  6. My lumbago seems to be acting up this weekend. Has to be Obama's fault.

CHB  (Proud to be a RAT (Republican Against Trump))

      1. "lumbago"  =  a painful, inflammatory, rheumatism of the tendons and muscles of the lumbar region. I don't think it's spread by e-mail. I did achieve a remission when I headed up I-70 yesterday morning to do a quick peak bag.
