Get More Smarter on Monday (July 18)

Get More SmarterIt could be worse: You could be in Cleveland right now. It’s time to Get More Smarter with Colorado Pols. If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example). If you are more of a visual learner, check out The Get More Smarter Show.

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► The Republican National Convention (RNC) is underway in Cleveland, and two Colorado politicos have speaking roles today. Jefferson County Commissioner Libby Szabo is scheduled to speak this afternoon, and Republican Senate nominee Darryl Glenn takes the mic this evening. John Frank of the Denver Post has more on Glenn’s moment in the national spotlight tonight:

The speech — scheduled at 7:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) and lasting about four minutes — is the biggest moment in Glenn’s political career. The 13-year local elected official in Colorado Springs emerged from obscurity to win a slot on the Republican primary ballot with a rousing speech at the state GOP convention in April, then topped a five-candidate field to secure the party’s nomination in June.

His prime-time moment gives Glenn a chance to introduce himself to party activists and major GOP donors he will need to buoy his campaign in Colorado, where many voters don’t know his name.

Tonight’s comments should be an interesting moment for Glenn, whose stump speeches thus far in Colorado have focused on his belief that compromise is stupid and his general dislike of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

► Despite months of hints and threats to the contrary, the #DumpTrump movement — which had some roots in Colorado — failed to get off the ground before the RNC festivities could even begin. The Denver Post provides a handy guide to the Cleveland circus, and as Politico reports, Republican insiders are looking forward to the RNC like you might be excited for flu season:

Forget about the balloons, the expressions of party unity and the quadrennial celebration of partisan pride. GOP insiders are dreading the Republican convention in Cleveland this week.

That’s according to The POLITICO Caucus — a panel of activists, strategists and operatives in 11 key battleground states. Nearly two-thirds of Republican insiders, 65 percent, said they are less excited about this year’s convention — which a number of top Republicans are avoiding — than previous editions.

► The on-again, off-again rumors about Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper potentially becoming a running mate for Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton are officially on…again.

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► Anti-tax Republicans and the likes of the Independence Institute’s Jon Caldera aren’t going to be happy to learn that Colorado’s “Bustang” bus service is proving to be a huge success.

At Least He’s Not Your Republican Party Vice-Chair.

► Republican consultants somehow convinced Ben “The Bachelor” Higgins to run for State House in HD-4…nevermind that the North Denver district is the top performing Democratic House District in the entire state.

► Proponents of a plan to widen I-25 between Longmont and Ft. Collins have run into a $137.6 million dollar problem.

► New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is more than a little bitter about being passed over as Donald Trump’s choice for Vice President. From “The Fix”:

Even some of Christie’s closest allies struggled to understand what his fierce loyalty toward Trump — even as Trump seemed to treat Christie as a sort of affable fall guy — was about. The only conclusion anyone arrived at was that Christie has pushed all his chips into the center of the table on a bet that being Trump’s staunchest defender would be rewarded when it came time to picking a vice president.

That bet wound up being a big loser. And Christie is just now coming to terms with the fact that he has flushed his political career down the toilet for, well, not much.

The Tri-County Health Department is warning that people in Littleton and Highlands Ranch may have been exposed to measles. If only there was a vaccination for measles…

► The list of Republicans who are not attending the RNC in Cleveland is becoming more notable the the number of people who are planning to show up.

OTHER LINKS YOU SHOULD CLICK

► The Colorado Independent profiles Misty Plowright, the first transgender candidate for Congress in the entire country. Plowright, a Democrat, is seeking to unseat Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn in CO-5.

ICYMI

► Will Texas Sen. Ted Cruz use his Republican Convention speech to endorse Donald Trump for President, or to toss the lyrical equivalent of rotten fruit?

  1. In case anyone asks: No, John Hickenlooper is not VP material. And D's should find a better way to win CO and turn it unapologetically blue, like making El Paso county safe for D's.

    1. Agree we don't need Hick to win Colorado. HRC is ahead in all polls here anyway. Interested in how you plan this Dem takeover of El Paso County, though.

    1. Enlightening story.  Trump's Chumps should read it.  Here is the punch line:

As for Trump’s anger toward him, he said, “I don’t take it personally, because the truth is he didn’t mean it personally. People are dispensable and disposable in Trump’s world.” If Trump is elected President, he warned, “the millions of people who voted for him and believe that he represents their interests will learn what anyone who deals closely with him already knows—that he couldn’t care less about them.

      1. That's the Trump I grew up to know in New Jersey and New York. He's a user, and he freely admits it. Take him at face value when he says that bankruptcy is "just a business tactic" and he uses it successfully. He's more than willing to leave the everyday guy holding the back in pursuit of his own profit and advancement; in fact, he couldn't give a damn about anyone else.

      2. So he'd be our first sociopath President, even more historic than first African American or first woman. Then maybe we could go for our first psychopath, first schizophrenic, first four legged….. we've already had a first elected to a second term while obviously suffering from early stage dementia in his first term….. also brought to us by the good ol’ GOP.

        1. No, he wouldn't be. To quote David Bowie:  Do you remember President Nixon?

Then again, I’m no shrink but I believe Nixon was more of a paranoid schizophrenic.
