Trump's Love for Putin Problematic for Republicans like Coffman

Rep. Mike Coffman sounded like Donald Trump before Donald Trump.
Rep. Mike Coffman sounded like Donald Trump before Donald Trump.

NBC news featured both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a “Commander-in-Chief” televised townhall event on Wednesday. As Reuters reports, one of the bigger moments of the evening came when Trump heaped praise on Russian President Vladimir Putin:

Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that Russia’s Vladimir Putin had been a better leader than U.S. President Barack Obama, as the Republican presidential nominee used a televised forum to argue he was best equipped to reassert America’s global leadership.

Trump suggested at the event in which he and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton made back-to-back appearances that U.S. generals had been stymied by the policies of Obama and Clinton, who served as the Democratic president’s first secretary of state.

“I think under the leadership of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton the generals have been reduced to rubble. They have been reduced to a point that’s embarrassing for our country,” Trump said at NBC’s “Commander-in-Chief” forum in New York attended by military veterans.

Clinton’s campaign jumped all over Trump’s remarks, calling on Republican candidates across the country to comment on Trump’s pro-Putin comments and negative remarks about U.S. military leadership:

Trump’s pro-Putin comments could be particularly troublesome for Republican politicians such as Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Aurora), who has rarely missed an opportunity to blame President Obama for the rise of ISIS. Coffman has also “joked” about comparing the Veterans Administration to ISIS while tossing out side jokes about beheadings. Coffman has even gone so far as to call Obama “a recruiting tool for ISIS.”

Media outlets may not follow up on Clinton’s call to ask Republican officials about Trump’s comments, but these questions are more than appropriate for Coffman.

    1. Coffman has gone farther to distance himself from Trump than anyone else in Colorado. Why must he answer for things Trump says that offend you? It's stupid and transparent.

      1. He's just tsk tsked a little more because he's not in a 100% safe red district. Where the rubber meets the road he's no different from any other pol supporting this completely unqualified, frighteningly ignorant presidential candidate, not even after Trump's statement that he would fire all or most of the generals as if that would be within the realm of feasibility on any level or his constant praise of Putin as a great leader because of his iron fisted control of his country as if that's something an American should admire.

The only distance that counts is the distance that the conservative Dallas Star has so admirably insisted there should be between every American voter and the unthinkable possibility of a President Trump.  Let me know when Coffman or McCain says…. this man is so beyond the pale in every way, I as an American first cannot and will not vote for him. We cannot hoist upon the world this profoundly ignorant, infantile man.

    2. How about Trump's suggestion that he'll probably fire most of the generals? How does he think the military works?  Who does he plan to replace all of the present generals with? Does he think he can just "hire" whoever he wants for a new cohort of generals?

And where is the universal Republican outrage, especially the outrage of GOP pols like look at me, I'm a Marine, watch me do push ups (?) Coffman, that would be exploding in a deafening media wide roar right now if any Dem had said anything close?

Where are the demands for denunciation by the culprit's fellow party members and for the culprit to drop out of the race immediately that would be echoing from every rightie media platform and from the offices of every GOP congress member? The cries, which ought to be particularly familiar to Coffman, of  "He's not a real American!" Where is all that?

Aren't Rs supposed to be the ones with undying, more patriotic than thou admiration and respect for our military and our military leaders? Shouldn't Coffman be leading the denunciation and repudiation of Trump? Shouldn't we have heard from him within minutes?

The same questions should be asked about what the GOP reaction would be if Obama or HRC had expressed such admiration for an elected dictator, formerly of the KGB, for doing such a great job of "controlling" his country. What if either of them had lavished praise on Castro for his long iron fisted reign?

Rhetorical questions of course. We all know the answers to all of them.

Regardless of past military service, pols like Coffman and, yes, like McCain, must now be seen as examples of the most abject, pathetic, honorless political cowardice. They are the ones who put party and their own political asses before country in supporting the unthinkable… a Trump presidency. They are the ones with the yawning patriotism deficit. They are the ones who have turned their backs on being real Americans.
