Will Penry Even Keep His Senate Seat?

by: Colorado Pols

Fri Nov 13, 2009 at 14:29:17 PM MST

As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:

No longer a candidate for governor, Josh Penry is planning to leverage his withdrawal from the race for maximum Republican advantage.

It's also possible that he'll run again for the Senate seat he already holds, Penry said in an exclusive interview with The Daily Sentinel editorial board Thursday...

Penry has yet to endorse McInnis, for whom he worked as press secretary in Washington, D.C.

He didn't press McInnis for a job, he said, and made no other arrangements with him, but is hoping to press him to offer more definitive budget plans to voters, Penry said.

As to whether he'll try to keep his current job in the Senate, Penry said he would speak with state Rep. Steve King, R-Grand Junction. King announced he was running for the Penry's Senate seat after Penry announced his gubernatorial bid.

The two frequently drive from Grand Junction to Denver together during the legislative session, and Penry said he planned to speak with King before deciding whether to run again.

We assume a disappointed Rep. Steve King would still understand that Josh Penry stepping out of the gubernatorial race so early must inevitably delay his own move up. But such a big yet-to-be-decided detail highlights the unplanned nature of Penry's withdrawal from the race to begin with--anything's possible in this hard landing we suppose.

From a career advice point of view, we'd encourage Penry to keep his Senate seat for another term: it's a lot easier to make your move to higher office from an existing office. Or have the events of the last week left a worse taste in Penry's mouth than we know...?

Quick question--is King termed out in the House?
If he can run for the House again, then this seems like this isn't such bad news. If he's termed out, then this really sucks for him if Penry backs out and runs for the Senate again.

Ah thanks.
Well then, he's fine. He can run for 2 more terms and then parlay right into the Senate.

If JP starts missing public appearances and
the official answer is:
-  he has the flu: he's dead
- he needs more time with his family: he's head to rehab
- he needs to make some decisions: rehab & divorce
- he's hiking the Continental Divide: rehab

He's doing some soul searching
= he's dating Ted Haggard.

-he has the flu: he's dead
Reminds me of the good old days when the Kremlin would announce that the Soviet leader of the day had a "cold," only to announce weeks later that he was dead.
BTW, hiking the Continental Divide, like hiking the Appalachian Trail, means he's brushing up on his Spanish and logging frequent flier miles to Buenos Aires.

I was in Belgrade
in the days leading up to Tito's death in 1980. I was staying with an American Diplomat's son who was kind of a mascot to the media correspondants stationed there at the time, and we were all gathered in a bar waiting for periodic updates from a female spokesperson for the Yugoslavian government. She would say something like, "Marshal Tito is resting comfortably, and we expect him to recover fully within a few days," and the journalists would then discuss among themselves how many minutes he had left, judging from that announcement! It was great stuff.

I remember a great headline from the early 80's

Andropov Dead!

[ Parent ]
Yeah, after Brezhnev,
came the last hurrah of the Soviet Gerontocracy, with Andropov and Chernenko dying off in quick succession, and then Gorby coming in, with unexpected results. Ah, those were the days....

Does anyone believe what Penry says anymore?
Just more to add to Penry's long growing ledger of lies and flimflamery.  His Balloon Daddy approach to politics is simply becoming absurd.  On the other hand, with Doug Bruce embarrassed out of political office, Penry fills his shoes quite well.  Who would we have to hold up as an example of the extremism which has its death grip on the throat of the Republican Party nowadays?

"Is anyone else here tired of the flimflam, mealy-mouthed Republican?"  --Josh Penry

Doug Bruce wasn't embarrassed at all.
He still won't shut up.

Schulties is the moronic example of extremism.  Penry's a slightly less disturbing, giant ass.  I mean, really, let's give credit where credit is due.

I love the term ...
"Balloon Daddy approach to politics." :)

[ Parent ]
Does Penry meet the residency requirement?
I thought it was 12 months...and didn't he move to Littleton or something?

Littleton?
You mean he lives near me?  Ugh.  Say it ain't so.  Say it ain't so.

[ Parent ]
He still...
owns a house in Grand Junction.

[ Parent ]
Owning something and residing somewhere are different things
At least under Colorado law it is.

[ Parent ]
the dispositive factor is...
..where does he keep his football trophies?

(granted, I'm being generous in assuming he has any)

[ Parent ]
He does have trophies
Penry was a helluva football player at Grand Junction High and Mesa State.

[ Parent ]
Where does he keep the crown?
Penry was named National Scholar Athlete of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and Burger King.

[ Parent ]
You want fries with that?
n/t

[ Parent ]
To address your question...
...perhaps he's sittin' on a secret?

[ Parent ]
If you are going to question..
Penry's residency. Then you have to question the residency of all of the legislators who spend their majority of time in Denver during session. Josh's primary residence is in Grand Junction.

[ Parent ]
Not unless they move their family there
after moving out of their district......and filing papers for governor listing Littleton as their residence.

Oops.

[ Parent ]
His family was in gj..
His wife kept her job here and his son went to mesa county schools. Oops you got that fact wrong

[ Parent ]
And by the way..
That address in Littleton was his office address.

[ Parent ]
how could we forget......
Ms. Penry was not about to give up her Mesa State meal ticket.

[ Parent ]
Low blow..
"Mesa State meal ticket?!?" She is working to help support her family, unlike certain politicians the Penrys do not have a silver spoon in their mouths. At least she is not on the campaign payroll like other candidate's wives were. Why don't you spend your time insulting present candidates and leave former candidate's wives out of this? The Penrys have been through enough this past week and it's time to let it be.

[ Parent ]
The Penrys have been through enough
That's right, he's only the Senate minority leader and a possible candidate for re-election. Leave the man and his nepotism alone. Why does the public think it has a right to comment on public officials and their family's position at the public trough? It's unseemly.

[ Parent ]
This reminds me of the ChuangTzu
"If a politician dreams one night that he is a carpetbagger, and the next day he is a politician.  Is he a politician dreaming he was a carpetbagger, or a carpetbagger dreaming he was a politician?"

IIRC, it's only 12 months from the beginning of the next session,
not the election.  I'm also fairly sure that it's a voter registration thing, so whatever the residence rules for that are.  Sen. Romer changed his registration to his mom's house while looking for a house in his soon to be district and it wasn't an issue during the primary.

I didn't realize Penry filed with a Littleton address for gov., seems like a little blow to his only base.

A state legislative candidate must be
a resident of the District at least 12 months prior to the election, according to the Colorado Constitution Article V, Section 4.

[ Parent ]
Actually it was a primary issue
No one formally filed a complaint with the SoS. But it was mentioned several times during the early part of the campaign.
