Bob Schaffer Demands His Notes

by: Colorado Pols

Thu Oct 16, 2008 at 14:49:00 PM MDT

UPDATE #2: At least three people have sent us links to replacement video (now posted below), and a local copy in case another attempt at removal is made. Seriously, trying to suppress it just makes it worse--don't bother.

UPDATE: The video has been removed. Who got the lawyers involved?

We just got forwarded this hilarious clip from right before today's debate between Senate candidates Mark Udall and Bob Schaffer, recorded at Denver's Channel 7 studios:

According to the Udall campaign, the predefined rules for this debate called for neither candidate to use notes. The moderator calmly explains that Dick Wadhams got the letter with the rules. Schaffer wasn't pleased--he even half-accused Channel 7 of setting him up. He obviously had no idea he was being recorded.

He'll be even less pleased watching himself...

UPDATE #3: The Post's Michael Riley writes for Politics West:

Taping of a debate between Colorado's U.S. Senate candidates was delayed for about 30 minutes today as Republican Bob Schaffer argued with officials from KMGH Channel 7 over the use of notes.

Democrat Mark Udall said that he signed debate rules indicating that the two men competing to replace retiring Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Loveland, would not use props or notes. Former congressman Schaffer argued from the set that he knew nothing about those rules.

The standoff was ultimately broken by Udall, who offered what could go down as one of his best moments from any of the debates between the two men: "Look, let me say this," Udall said. "I think this is fast paced. I think this is a test of your wits -- it's a test of what you have in your head. If Bob needs to have a few notes with him, fine. But I'm here with an empty pad and let's go. Let's debate."

Hmmmmmm....
I wonder who sent you that clip Pols?  Was it the Udall campaign?  Was it a Channel 7 employee?  Why would Channel 7 send that out?

I've been noticing that you guys have not even been trying to hide your agenda the last couple of weeks.

Really though, what is the point of putting this on the front page?  Are you really that far in the bag for Udall and Obama?  Guess so.

Is it a crime, my friends ?
to expose Bob Schaffer for the a-hole he is ?  I think not.

" Is there a way to delete your own comments? " bjwilson83

[ Parent ]
Oh yes, we're all so in the bag for Udall - not
Udall has been called out here repeatedly for running a campaign by focus group, for straddling every issue, etc. This place has not been all that friendly to him.

The thing is, Schaffer is just a non-stop disaster. And if it bleeds, it leads. So yes, Schaffer gets more front page time than most anyone else - because of his mistakes.

Don't blame the messenger.

My recommendations in the 2010 primary?

[ Parent ]
You're right Dave
I must have missed all of those times you were extolling praise on Schaeffer and slamming Udall.  By that account, I must have also missed when Pols decided that they weren't going after Schaeffer in the same ratio as Udall.

And again, oh how I wish I can be a software company executive, they get all of the time in the world to sit and post on Colorado Pols!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[ Parent ]
Umm
When one candidate commits 100 times as many foibles as the other, the proper ratio is 100 to 1.

Non impediti ratione cogitationis.

"Some of the people that wanted to engage me in conversation appeared to have been the losers in the 'Are you smarter than Michele Bachmann contest?'." --Rep. Barney Frank

Knock it off
Ben;

You are out of line.  I have my disagreements with DavidThi808 (e.g. his occasional shrill ability to create controversy), but going after him like this is like taking a page out of the Republican playbook of character assassination.  David is a thoughtful individual who does a great service to the political community.

Schaffer has no one to blame but himself.  Mistake after mistake. Schaffer is all about himself and not Colorado's interests.

If you want to be a constructive member of this community's conversation, act like one, not a Republican hack going on a character assassination raid on someone who doesn't deserve it.

[ Parent ]
In Dave's defense, he has often posted
of Udall's wimpiness. He thinks Schaffer is so bad he'll have to vote for Udall anyway. I'm wondering if the saner choice isn't just to draw a hot bath, lie back with a glass of wine, and slit my wrists.

[ Parent ]
Nope, that's not democracy
In a democracy were not offered a perfect choice, we are offered 2 flwayed human beings. And sometimes the better one is mediocre. But to walk away because neither is "good enough" not only is not steping up to our responsibility, but then the lesser mediocrity can win.

Udall is a weenie. But Schaffer is horrible. The difference between the two is substantial. I voted for that difference.

My recommendations in the 2010 primary?

[ Parent ]
must you "flway" someone just because
...they won't submit to be "interviewed" by the likes of you?  Tsk tsk

Stop throwing stones.

"Don't go all "Ralphie" on me now: Just let it go." - Steve Harvey

[ Parent ]
Oh you're right...
..I should stop pointing out that David dislikes Udall simply because Udall wouldn't submit to an interview with him.  Thanks for showing me the light.

[ Parent ]
Give me a break
For the 185th time - Ed Perlmutter also turned me down and you don't see me flaying him. Ken Salazar did meet with me and yet I still take him to task for his vote on FISA.

You can make lame excuses but that doesn't change the facts. Udall is mediocre and will be a back-bencher. And Udall ran away from his constituents these last 2 years having a total of 1 pre-announced public meeting where he took questions.

But I'll repeat, he's still a lot better than Schaffer.

My recommendations in the 2010 primary?

[ Parent ]
I can make lame excuses for your decisions?
...I'd rather leave that you.

Perfection vs. Imperfection
I think that is one of the underlying psychological structures in elections, especially at the top. "Oh, my God, did you know that (fill in the blank) once farted???"

The seeking of perfection is mandated in the Bible by Paul, it is a theological underpinning of many faiths including The Church of Martha Stewart. As perfection can never by attained, the quest for it is doomed to failure, igniting self-loathing.

Lately, I have been influenced by Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese school of art and life. (Is that a redundancy?) The tenets are: Everything is Impermanent; Everything is Imperfect; Everything is Incomplete.

I am greatly comforted by those guidelines and it gives me an underpinning of forgiveness as I watch the political theater.

"Collective fear stimulates herd instinct and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd." -Bertrand Russell

[ Parent ]
Oh shut it, you fucking crybaby.
If the situation were reversed and it was Udall being the dumbass, you'd be bitching if it weren't front paged.

[ Parent ]
Ahhhhh
Classy as always buddy.  If the situation was reversed, you dumbasses would be all over this "site" for their lack of bi-partisanship

Did I piss you off Road?  Good, I can tell.

Sit and spin buddy....

[ Parent ]
Not really. I just like to swear, you stupid fuck.
:)

"The only way you could be worse is if you were Wade Norris." Ralphie

[ Parent ]
I gptta admit, Middle, you have style.
Maybe I should have tried to lure you into the hay mow rather than Marilyn. Do they have hay mows on farms in Illinois?
I'm not saying I would have got to first base, but you would have surely given me a memorable slapdown!

[ Parent ]
Yes, you would have experienced more pain than pleasure, Bob.
;)

"The only way you could be worse is if you were Wade Norris." Ralphie

[ Parent ]
What difference does it make?
The voter now has an army of people that do this regularly to any candidate. Once you decide to run for office, assume you are always on camera.

If you are an unpleasant person, a liar, a cheater or anything else, expect to be exposed as such.

It is amazing, however, how many more times Repubs are caught looking foolish, compared to Dems.  Or is it that Dems are just better people when they think no one is watching, which is truly the only time it matters.

[ Parent ]
There is a Camera Everywhere
Actually, as demo'd by Wadhams candidate in VA, every candidate is always on camera all the time.  There are microphones everywhere.

Every candidate, no matter what office is being sought, has to live as if every moment in public is on camera and being recorded.
And, if you are in a TV studio, what the H*(! are you thinking about?

Smile - You are on Candid Camera is not just a saying.

This movie has been rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and destruction
@pambennettauror

[ Parent ]
Should it surprise anyone
that there's a camera IN A TELEVISION STUDIO?

Channel 7 was live-streaming the debate, including the debate prep, and a number of folks grabbed this off the stream.

[ Parent ]
Hehehehe.
Best comment all day, right here.
Should it surprise anyone that there's a camera IN A TELEVISION STUDIO?

That might be a good motto Pam
Live as if every moment was being recorded by your enemies.

or

Do good even when no one is around to record it.

[ Parent ]
You're hopeless without notes too?
It's pretty easy to see who uploaded this video to youtube.

Mystery solved Bob... I mean Ben.

[ Parent ]
They make it sound so scandalous, don't they ?
Who uploaded it ? Where did it come from ? What nefarious "agenda" do they have ?

Hell, I would put that up in a NY minute and claim ownership just as the Udall campaign did.  Look, look, my opponent is a friggin idiot !

Hilarious.  But we'll wait for Ben Stein to get to the bottom of this.  There will be lawsuits !

Schaffer is toast
I wonder if Dick Waldhams is even talking to Bob Schaffer? If you prepare assuming you will have access to notes and than the notes are taken away you are at a disadvantage.

The man with a big smile on his face is Scott McInnis. Rudely pushed aside in favor of Schaffer the GOP now realizes that McInnis might have had a much better chance of holding the seat.

He should have worn....

"well reasoned... thoughtful" debate
Has anyone seen Schaffer as "well reasoned" or "thoughtful" during any of the debates while using crib notes?

Could have been much, much worse...

Nothing tops this though

What was really lame
Was when he showed up on the Meet the Press with note cards.  I have never seen any other guest show up with note cards.  WTF?

"Thousands are sailing, across the western ocean, to a land of opportunity, that some of them will never see . . ."

- The Pogues

bill O'Reilly?
really, I must have been living under a rock in the 90's. Bill O'Reilly hosting "Inside Edition" Wow and he can't send a segment out without it having to be written for him, really is it that hard to say, and here's Sting or we leave you tonight with Sting.

But to Schaffer, how is it that your campaign manager knew you didn't get notes, but you didn't. Something is wrong in the campaign!

Isn't it interesting,,,
What a smartass punk Schaffer comes across as every single time he is off script?

Fuck, this is a meltdown. Local TV tomorrow, MSNBC by the weekend. Udall schooled him so hard, he was so cool about it. And Schaffer is a smarmy little punk who can't construct an argument "with facts" unless it's out of a notebook!

Sorry, but as much as you try, I just can't buy in to the idea that every Democrat is evil except for Andrew Romanoff.

What about Udall's graciousness
He stepped in like a statesman and solved the problem even though it put him at a disadvantage.  What I liked was him telling Bob that he saw the letter, signed it and returned it.  Schaffer acted like he didn't even know that the letter existed. Talk about running a sloppy campaign.

Kudos to Udall to prepare to debate without notes and then in an act of good sportsmanship allow Schaffer to use his precious notes.  Good job Mark.

I'm waiting to hear someone tell you it was a "set up"...
A "set up" designed to make Udall appear gracious and Schaffer petulant...

[ Parent ]
I totally agree GG
And this moment of graciousness and being a good sport by Udall was not scripted and not while they were live. I am also sure he didn't know tape was running just as Schaffer did not.  It was spontaneous, and it tells you a lot about Udall.

Good on Mark.  I'll be proud to vote for him.

" Is there a way to delete your own comments? " bjwilson83

[ Parent ]
Couldn't agree more GG
Schaffer gets testy, and Udall just looks like a Senator. He didn't care if Schaffer had notes, because it didn't matter.

Anyone who thinks this is some grand conspiracy should try wearing hats made out of cloth and not aluminum foil.

"I'll take incompetence over a business model incentivised to kill me any day." -- DtR(H)

[ Parent ]
This truly reflects who these candidates are.
Udall with his reasoned, calm, adult approach and Schaffer with his childish, bullying, Equestrian Order of the Sphincter, temper-tantrum.

But hey...it gives Wadhams cover after Schaffer loses the election.  Wadhams can come out claiming what scumbag and piss poor candidate Schaffer was.   Like he did Allen.  Never mind that it is Wadhams' job to explain the rules to Schaffer.  And never mind that this is the second Wadhams candidate who got caught on tape making an ass of himself.

"Paulson is a disgrace to the Republican Party and to his country."  -Ben Stein
"I'm confused and disturbed by the GOP choice of Sarah Palin."  -Ben Stein

I liked Mark's response
The standoff was ultimately broken by Udall, who offered what could go down as one of his best moments from any of the debates between the two men: "Look, let me say this," Udall said. "I think this is fast paced. I think this is a test of your wits -- it's a test of what you have in your head. If Bob needs to have a few notes with him, fine. But I'm here with an empty pad and let's go. Let's debate."

That's one way to shut up loud mouth Schaffer.

"Suddenly, it may be cool to be American again" - William J. Kole

[ Parent ]
Look at the woman up close in the beginning
I think she's laughing at Schaffer.

My recommendations in the 2010 primary?

"that one"
The woman appears to be Maggie Fox, Mark's wife.
