As the Charleston Post and Courier reports, Colorado’s Sen. Cory Gardner got into televangelist character at a fundraising dinner for South Carolina Republicans, waxing bombastic in front of the friendly crowd:
Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, the evening’s headliner, waxed poetic about his conversion to conservatism at a young age and railed against what he argued is increasing extremism from his Democratic colleagues.
“Our rights come from God, not from Chuck Schumer,” Gardner said, referring to the Senate minority leader from New York. [Pols emphasis]
It took us a minute to put this one together, since we’d say it’s pretty obvious that our rights as Americans do not descend to us from the current Minority Leader of the U.S. Senate. On the other hand, invoking the Almighty against some guy from New York City who…wait, that’s right, isn’t a Christian at all! Surefire winner in the Palmetto State.
As it turns out, Cory Gardner can blow a dog whistle as well as anybody.

If all of our rights come from God, then what's this stupid Constitution Republicans keep harping on about?
Something they claim to know, but never read.
Righty 101: God grants them, the Constitution guarantees them. If government gives you them, government can take them away.
The problem is whose god gave what rights to whom.
I think the bigger problem is that government (us) clearly gave them. Otherwise we'd be using the bible to decide if people could own guns, or papers could write mean things about Trump.
Hey. With Roy Moore as a Senate candidate, got to cater to the faux piety.
As a Jew Chuck Schumer does believe in God. Yes it's still a dog whistle, but not exactly as you're implying.
You still think Trump can't do any real harm?
Surely you're not expecting any reply, much less an honest one, from Mr. Condescending Smarty Pants…
Remember, He's not a real Christian. It's affinity fraud, all the way down.
Of course our dear troll isn't a real Christian, either.
Lame-ass, uptight, racist white dude. He can't even come close to pulling it off.
Jesus, here I thought Corwardly was deriving most all of his rights from the Kochs, et ilk . . .
. . . wait a minute, soooo — the Kochs must be god ??? . . .
Cory is in for a big surprise when he dies and simply turns into wormfood.
But the beauty of it is he will never know he was wrong. An agnostic like me, in contrast, will spend eternity in a lake of fire feeling foolish. Fortunately, as a longtime Broncos fan, I'm used to that.
Poor Cory … seeing only "increasing extremism from his Democratic colleagues" and not realizing that his efforts for Senate Republicans in this cycle will be enabling extremism from his Republican colleagues — especially those on the outside who wanna be his colleagues (Roy Moore, come on down!).
