Romanoff has filed his paperwork.
Former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff announced today he has filed the paperwork with the Federal Election Commission required for him to challenge U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in a Democratic primary.
Romanoff could not be reached for comment, but the filing was announced in a news release.
“He will make a public announcement of his intentions next week,” the release stated.
Joelle Martinez, the granddaughter of former Denver Councilwoman Ramona Martinez, is handling media inquiries for Romanoff. She said Romanoff would talk to reporters next week.
Ramona Martinez said she and her husband, Larry, vice president of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement and a person with ties to union leaders in Colorado, also are Romanoff supporters.
Smart politics tying the Martinez family into their press release. There is no question that the Latino vote is going to be important, and Romanoff’s legislative history could be a concern for immigrant’s rights groups. Showing early support there might defuse the issue.
