  1. So, for decades America lured workers to cross our border by offering jobs that paid more than they could get in their own country.  Jobs, it is said, that Americans themselves would not do.  Employers who hired these workers faced no consequences.  As long as the worker provided some semblance of a Social Security card, the employer was in the clear.  These workers then had federal and state income taxes withheld from their paychecks to help fund our government.  They also paid Social Security and Medicare taxes for which they would not be eligible when they reached retirement age.

Today, those workers face arrest and deportation by ICE.  Their children were told to register with the federal government so they could continue to live here.  Now, 800,000 of them face deportation, using information provided to the government, to a country they have never known.   Polls show 87% of Americans oppose deportation of the DACA kids.

Democrats are right to insist on a DACA fix, or let the government shut down.  Part of the debate should focus on our complicity in enticing workers to cross our borders for jobs that US employers gladly offered.  EVerify which would require employers to check the status of a job applicant is almost never discussed.  To me, it is the essential fix to the problem going forward.

Two asides:  1) To those who say they can't find any Americans to do certain jobs, I ask why they don't believe in supply and demand.  Perhaps Americans won't do the work for the pay being offered, but surely there is some wage that would result in overflowing job applications.  2) I have seen the fake Social Security cards that some of my clients accept for employment applications.  Their defense is that they are not required to determine if the card is fake, just that a card is produced.

    1. FOLLOW THE MONEY

Absolutely E-Verify is an essential fix to the problem, because by far what drives illegal immigration is work. Yet virtually every legislative session since 2006 the GA has voted down E-Verify requirements.

In the special session called in 2006 to address immigration, the Republican caucus proposed a bill that would have required E-Verify. Governor Owens supported the bill until Larry Mizel, CEO of MDC Holdings (Richmond Homes), and chief lobbyist for the homebuilding industry Norman Brownstein paid a visit to the guv and told him to kill the bill, which Owens dutifully did out of deference to his corporate masters. Mizel of course is a huge mega donor to the GOP.

I was in the production home building business at that time and I can confidently  state that at least 50% of the home building workforce was illegal (it's even higher today). Per the 1986 Immigration Reform Act it is illegal for a business to knowingly hire an undocumented worker, so Mizel and Brownstein admitted to criminal behavior (they should have been charged and prosecuted), but of course that never happened.

Mizel pockets millions off the backs of cheap illegal labor and the guv is nothing but a five dollar hooker. Yep, we have the best government money can buy.

      Any questions?

      1. yes

At $5 for Owens those John’s overpaid, that whore coulda’ been had for less . . .

. . . but by then, I suspect, Mizel was well into the habit of paying for any of his pleasures.

  2. Wall street billionaires are laughing off the threat of a shutdown.  I guess they make money either way

    DOW 26071.72 +53.91 (+0.21%)

    NASDAQ 7336.38 +40.33 (+0.55%)

    S&P 2810.30 +12.27 (+0.44%)

    10 YR. T-NOTE 2.64 +0.28 (+1.07%)

      1. I've started seeing articles discussing how the Fed should raise their target from 2 to 4%

If the yield curve inverts (short term higher than 10 year), that is a signal for a recession.  I have a 2.65% 5 year CD that I bought last week.

I just hope we don't see a return to the stagflation of the '70's.

  3. Urgh. Our "Fake President" wanted me to keep babies in utero for what? another few months? Years? Shit, they lived in my basement until they were 25 – isn't that long enough?

“Right now, in a number of states, the laws allow a baby to be born from his or her mother’s womb in the ninth month. It is wrong. It has to change.” — so said Donald Trump today

He wanted to say "torn from his or her mother's womb", but I guess that reading a teleprompter is hard.
