Mike Coffman Forgets What Mike Coffman Said Earlier

  • by: Colorado Pols

Congressman Mike Coffman (R-Aurora) responded today to the controversial public release of the Nunes memo with a statement that seems to forget what Mike Coffman said himself about a year ago. First, today’s Tweet:

Coffman is notorious for changing his position on issues faster than you can click on a link,  and he’s been all over the place when it comes to taking a stance on investigations into potential collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. Coffman did indeed call for an “independent counsel” in early 2017, but that was largely so that he could say that any investigation should also include the Obama administration.

More importantly, Coffman’s call for an “independent counsel” came several weeks after the Congressman said publicly that the FBI itself should be investigated in the wake of the resignation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

In his statement today, Coffman says that the American people should “reach their own conclusions” after reading the Nunes memo. This might be good advice if it weren’t coming from a man who quite strikingly reached a conclusion about investigating the FBI last February.

  1. Why would you ever counsel Americans to NOT learn the facts for themselves and make up their own minds? What kind of fascist groupthink does the Democrat Party engage in nowadays? Unbelievable, Colorado Pols!!!!

    1. Would Rep. Coffman (and your humble self) agree that we should read both this memo – prepared by people under suspicion in an investigation – along with a similar rebuttal by either Dems on the Intelligence Committee or FBI/DOJ career officials?

    2. The poo-flinging flying monkey appears . . .

When did you ever give a flying fat Fluffy about facts, fluffhead?  This memo would have set a new record for fact-free fiction if Trump hadn’t already done that personally himself (daily).

You’ve got no shame, and even less brains . . .

    3. Moddy, ask that question of Coffman. A year ago he did not say people should "reach their own conclusions," he was telling them what to think. Now he is saying the opposite. That contradiction–hypocrisy–was the point of the diary, a point that went clear over your head.

  2. This memo has to be a sick joke.

We already know the circumstances of Steele's involvement with the FBI on this matter are not accurately described in the memo. We already know that the memo misrepresents/omits the requirements of FISA re-authorization (namely that the previous warrant has to be shown to be producing results). We know that the Steele memo was not the beginning of the investigation on Page – a fact even admitted in the memo itself. In fact we know Page had previously admitted to being improperly involved with Russia before he ever joined the Trump campaign.

We know from the public minority response (not yet its own classified response, which Republicans are blocking) that the representation of McCabe's testimony that the FISA warrant request would not have been made without including the information from the Steele dossier is misleading. (Hint #1: the information was corraborated elsewhere; hint #2: "of course we would never submit a warrant without including that piece of intelligence – we wanted complete representation") We also know that the memo falsely states that the FISA request failed to note the political origin of the Steele dossier.

And we know that the memo does a stupid-lousy job of name-dropping in a transparent attempt to tar every figure in the FBI/DOJ who has decided in favor of the investigation.

Finally, much is made of the "bias" against Trump. What is bias, and what is sheer horror at having seen the evidence? There has never been a Democratic head of the FBI – they've every single one been Republicans, even the Democratic appointees.

  3. Moddy, what about your beloved "due process" (which does not walk hand-in-hand with the actual requirements of the Due Process Clause)?  Last time I was in court, both sides got to present evidence.  Allowing the release of lickspittle's memo and denying the release of the rebuttal is the antithesis of due process.  But, alas, you are just a fascist in poor disguise.
