Let's have it: what will happen with healthcare reform in the Senate ?

You polsters are a pretty politically adept bunch.  Show us your smarts by predicting what exactly is going to happen with healthcare reform in the Senate.

Harry Reid says it might not happen this year.  Lindsey Graham says the bill is dead on arrival.  Lieberman, being from insurance capital of the world, clearly states he’ll fillibuster.

Are there even 60 votes ?  Being a former Senator just over a year ago does Obama have some sort of secret strategy to get it through, or is he laying low ?  Is Harry Reid incompetent, or is he in the bag with the health insurance lobby ?

Was anybody else impressed with Nancy Pelosis’ vote counting ?  I was.

Anyway, I want to know what you all think.  Discuss.  Enlighten me, I have a steak dinner riding on this ; )

Whats going to happen in the Senate with healthcare reform ?

  1. The bill has the clearance to go through reconciliation, and if those trying to get the bill through see too big of a roadblock, they’ll use it.

If they do, they’ll have to fight through challenges to sending the whole bill through reconciliation, and I expect at some point there could be rulings from the Chair stating that “this is the way it is”.  Not quite the nuclear option, but close.  Republicans passed several measures this way when they were in charge, and the end of the procedural world didn’t occur then…

    1. Here in Ohio, most people I talk to are for health reform but against the public option.

The solution is simple. Increase support of HSAs…offer some tax incentives and create a pool for those that can not qualify for health coverage.

          1. be watered down into meaninglessness.

However, in committee the good bits from the House version can form the backbone of the “compromise” version. And the bad bits from all around can conveniently disappear.

And brand new bits can be added (such as no health insurance, ever, for people with pre-existing conditions such has having the name Joe Lieberman or Lindsey Graham or Michelle Bachman). I can dream, can’t I?

            1. Joe Lieberman, Lindsey Graham, and Michelle Bachmann will remain themselves long after we’ve perfected anti-cancer drugs and an immortality serum.  We’ve got to limit our costs somehow – treating incurable conditions like those seems a good place to start cutting.

          2. I fully expect the initial Senate bill to be everything that Max Baucus can make it – that is to say, virtually useless.

What remains to be seen is who gets sent to the conference committee.  If it’s Baucus and Friends, then we’re going to get a craptacular conference bill.  If it’s a mix of more liberal types and Baucus, or if Baucus gets shut out entirely from the conference, then the conference bill will look more like the House bill, probably trimmed down a bit.

Then the fun starts.  The conference bill cannot be amended, and there is only a single cloture vote allowed for it.  It is rare to have a cloture fight over a conference bill, but the GOP will try.  Don’t know how the reconciliation rules work on conference bills, but I’m guessing both sides will try to push the limits (in opposite directions) – the health care bill is just too important if Democrats want to continue in the majority after next year.

            1. you just suck all the fun out of it.

When you go fishing do you grab the fish with a net instead of letting it squirm around on the hook and then flop around on the dock?

              ANd you are correct sir.

Though my third layer of bs above was intended to reference the conference committee.

              1. I haven’t fished for ages; something about cleaning fish isn’t healthy for my breathing, so I don’t bother harassing the fish – I’ll buy it after it’s processed.  Sucks, too – I actually liked fishing for what little I did of it (discounting the obligatory fishhook injury…).

I actually find the procedural maneuverings to be “fun” in the same way that watching chess matches or golf is “fun” for some people; there’s a lot of strategy to be had.
