As CNN’s Chris Cillizza explains:

This may be the most important paragraph of Donald Trump’s presidency:

“Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, claims that then-candidate Trump knew in advance about the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower in which Russians were expected to offer his campaign dirt on Hillary Clinton, sources with knowledge tell CNN. Cohen is willing to make that assertion to special counsel Robert Mueller, the sources said.”

Holy crap.

Let’s take a quick step back for some context. The June 2016 meeting between a group of Russians and the top brass of the Trump campaign, including the candidate’s eldest son and son-in-law, has long been at the center of questions — from special counsel Robert Mueller and others — about whether there was any sort of collusion between a foreign country and the Trump campaign in 2016. When news of the meeting first broke, Donald Trump Jr. insisted it was a brief and unimportant gathering focused on an obscure adoption law that the Russians wanted changed.

For his part, President Trump continues to insist that he knew nothing about the now-infamous “Trump Tower meeting.” But as Philip Bump agrees for the Washington Post, Cohen’s words are really, really, really bad news for Trump.

    But the explosive report, if corroborated by Mueller’s team, could potentially expose the president and his team to additional legal risk, according to experts.

    “The significance of this report will depend on the facts,” said Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. attorney from eastern Michigan. “If Trump was aware of the meeting in advance and encouraged it to go forward, then he could face criminal exposure under a number of different theories.”

    Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and the Trump campaign chairman at the time, Paul Manafort, attended the meeting, billed as an opportunity for a Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, to share damaging information about the Democratic nominee for president.

    Hmmm, Manafort — where have we heard that name before? Oh yeah, the guy that is facing decades in jail if he loses his cases currently under way.

    But as Nutter likes to say:

    “Of course, for some, even if Trump is caught on video talking Russian to Putin, they will not care,” added Zeidenberg, who served as deputy to independent counsel Patrick Fitzgerald during the George W. Bush-era investigation into who leaked CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity.

  4. I, for one, want the Feds to slow walk the indictments. One a month for the next 12 months. Get at least 6+ convictions. Slowly build the case against Eric.
