What you can do to fight back this week (August 6)

In the end, the threats couldn’t hold them back.

This weekend, students gathered at the Colorado State Capitol to march in support for reducing gun violence across America. Part of a nationwide March on the NRA, they joined thousands of students and other Americans concerned about gun violence to call for real solutions instead of rhetoric and finger-pointing.

Someone didn’t want this march to happen in Colorado. Organizers received a chilling threat that gun rights “are worth more than your life,” which caused some organizers to consider cancelling the event. No one would blame them if they had cancelled. Threats of physical violence have no place in our politics.

But they didn’t cancel. The march went forward, the students responded to the few counter-protesters who showed up with respect, and in the end the event was a huge success. Once again, progressives in Colorado proved our ideas are stronger, and our courage is greater. Once again, the next generation did something to give us all hope for the future.

Thanks for being a part of this fight for our shared values, week after week. We are making the difference. Here are more ways to take action for the week of August 6:

9to5 Colorado: Denver Meadows Residents Demand Urgent Support From the City!

Denver Meadows Mobile Home Park is set to close on September 30th 2018. Residents, 9to5 staff, and attorney Komal Vaidya were able to successfully push back the date of the park closure from June, we were able to stop the rezoning, we filed a collective lawsuit, passed a 10 month moratorium on the redevelopment of parks, created a mobile home task force and so much more. And now we need the city to act to support residents in the case that they cannot stay in their homes or live in a new mobile home community.

Canvass in support of Ingrid and the People’s Resolution

Join Ingrid Encalada to Create A Path to status through the People’s Resolution, which is being circulated on behalf of the four women living in Sanctuary in Colorado. We’ll be canvassing nearby local businesses and faith communities to ask for their endorsement of the Resolution and engage the community!

Conservation Colorado Conservation Scorecard Party

Join us at Anythink Library to celebrate and educate yourself about YOUR state representative’s voting practices. This is a free and exciting chance to learn something new while making sure that state policymakers are representing YOUR values in office. At our annual Scorecard release party, we will examine and converse around the voting actions of two well-known state legislators, Faith Winter and Beth Martinez Humenik. We will have an open discussion about priority conservation bills. Food and drinks will be available for guests. Come with an empty stomach and an eager mind!

Save the Ales Beer Festival

Save the Ales, one of Denver’s most affordable and eco-friendly beer festivals, is back. It’s vital to our health, our economy, and many of the recreational activities Colorado is famous for. Remember: no water means no beer! Caring 4 Denver Ballot Initiative Launch

MCA Denver is taking a leading role to support the Caring 4 Denver Ballot Initiative that will improve Denver’s ability to address mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention. Why? It’s partly because it’s an issue that affects us more than most. We know that creatives are about 25% more likely to suffer from mental health issues, a statistic that was made palpable for us this past year when we lost one of the shining stars in the Denver art community. Mostly, we believe in the importance of a place that creates a sense of belonging because we see art as a crucial part of caring about the well-being of our city as a whole. This event will launch our support and we’d love to have you join us, learn more about the ballot, and get involved with the cause.
