Pittsburgh Synagogue Attack Discussion Thread

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE: Amanda Henderson of the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado:

At the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado our hearts are breaking with the Jewish community at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and with our Jewish family who has been experiencing an increase in anti-Semitic hate and vitriol over the past several years. Hateful and violent rhetoric must stop. Our leaders must lead. This is the time to stop pitting one person against another and to work for freedom and thriving for all.

It’s difficult to find words to describe what happened today at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, but we’ll use this space to aggregate local responses and news updates on what appears to be the deadliest attack on Jewish people in American history. This is a tragedy with enormous social and political import that we’ll all be unpacking for some time. Both Colorado U.S. Senators have expressed their outrage and sympathy:

If you would like to give in response to this tragedy, we suggest the Anti-Defamation League and HIAS.

  1. As a Pittsburgh native I am shocked and saddened by the attack on the Tree of Life synagogue by a deranged hate filled murderer. I know the Squirrel Hill neighborhood well – I had an apartment there about a mile from Tree of Life my senior year at Pitt.

The response from Pittsburghers to this horrific event has been overwhelming. The blood donation centers are full with people donating not Jewish blood, or Christian blood, or Muslim blood, but human blood, because at the end of the day love will prevail over hate.

  2. Today, I feel Jewish. My mother's people, the family that converted but were still ostracized for "the taint in the blood", buried in segregated cemeteries,  the ones that were marked as "Hebrew" on the ship's manifest coming over the Atlantic, the ones left behind, who didn't convert, who didn't try to pass, the ones who died in the camps, the ones who cut themselves off from their heritage and culture, changed all the family names, denied their history, all to try to "fit in" in antisemitic America.

Nothing new under the sun. Trump has normalized hate and Naziism, he has made it acceptable to hate for religious differences, for too much pigment in the skin, for being from another country seeking asylum from gangsters and terror.ists  He has reached back into the worst cesspools humanity was capable of, and why? Not out of any deeply held beliefs on his own part, but for political power and building his base.

    1. crying I'm sorry, M.J. I thought of you and Elliot immediately when I heard about this. Then I wondered what that idiot in the Oval Office thought about it. Of course, he had nothing to do with causing it. Just ask him.

      1. Some hardcore anti-Semites would say that Trump himself is compromised and corrupt, because of his Jewish son in law (Kushner).

Progressive Jews, on the other hand, criticize Kushner for being silent about the Charlottesville mob, about his father in law proudly proclaiming his "nationalism" and promotion of every white supremacist dog whistle. Kushner's own grandparents were Holocaust survivors, and Kushner's stance is one of silence and tacit acceptance of Trump's policies.

After the Pittsburgh synague massacre, Jared Kushner has been silent, still. His wife, Ivanka, has spoken out, in the ways you'd expect her to.  Whatever decency the $resident shows is probably due to his daughter's prompting.

        1. Hardcore anti-Semites can come up with explanations of nearly ANYONE being compromised by intention or by manipulation.

          • By self-identification as a Jew.
          • By activity, such as going to a synagogue for an activity, even it if were as benign as this week's "naming" ceremony for infants.
          • By profession (those money-lenders).
          • By political belief (she favors immigration by Soviet Jews).
          • By tourism ("he went to Israel.").
          • By objecting or arguing against the truth (as found in Protocols of Zion and its ideological offspring).
          • By stereotyped personal appearance.
  3. Sad reality is that these shootings have become so common people that people barely give them much thought anymore.  There are no easy answers, but we have to keep looking for preventive solutions.
