The chair of a large Trump-backing organization hopped on conservative KNUS radio yesterday and warned U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) that he’d better put an even tighter embrace around Trump.
“I think he’d better start supporting the President’s issues when it comes to border security, and fighting against illegal immigration, and supporting the president on all of the important issues that the president got elected on, but specifically illegal immigration,” said former Colorado Springs lawmaker Ted Harvey, who chairs the Committee to Defend the President.
I left a phone message for Harvey asking why he’s critical of Gardner, given Gardner’s 91 percent pro-Trump voting record, including Gardner’s major votes for three Trump-backed bills to kill Obamacare and his vote for the Trump tax bill.
Harvey didn’t immediately respond, but the former director of Colorado’s Republican Party, Dick Wadhams, countered Harvey’s position in a recent KNUS interview, saying Gardner has always been there for Trump.
“Okay, [Gardner] voted for, and was a day in, day out defender of the tax cuts,” Wadhams said recently on KNUS. “He has been a defender of deregulation. He’s been the defender of Trump’s foreign policy. So, tell me, where has Cory fallen down, as U. S. Senator for Trump?”
Commenting on this month’s election, Harvey said on KNUS that Republican candidate for governor Walker Stapleton had “no campaign” because he didn’t “run on any of the major issues that mobilize grassroots conservatives to get out and work their butts off to win an election.”
And U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman of Aurora was “demoralizing” die-hard Republicans in his district by “actively campaigning against the president.”
“We are going to have to find candidates who will passionately and articulately defend the conservative platform, and, I would argue, defend the president and the policies that he is pushing,” continued Harvey on air. “And then we will have the opportunity to win elections.”
Harvey has long taken a hard line on illegal immigration, once saying he opposed a path to citizenship (and in-state tuition) for undocumented young people who came to the U.S. as children.
Harvey founded the Committee to Defend the President, which was first set up as the Stop Hillary PAC.

Oh please … The Coffman campaign showed the power of standing up to the *resident 4% of the time. I hope Cory Gardner will proceed to improve on his 91% agreement, as that will make for a clearer advertisement.
As it is, the 91% in only that low due to Cory being willing to sanction Russia, a yes vote for a nonbinding resolution on giving Congress a voice on national security tariffs, a no vote on the Trade delegate, and a no vote on warrantless spying.
Absolutely. After all, the embrace got Cindy Hyde-Smith elected yesterday. (I know, CO is not MS. I am being facetious.)
Perhaps Ted Harvey is positioning himself as the pro-Trump alternative to Cory should Gardner drop out or face a primary challenge from the right.
Sure GOP. Listen to Ted Harvey and ignore the polling saying Trump was a big part of why you lost 2018. Crow's attacks on Coffman for voting with Trump 96% of the time had no affect at all. If Gardner goes all in with Trump he'll win by a number that is a multiple of the Square root of -1.
Biggest source today, by far, of illegal immigrants in the country is people who overstay visas. Trump says and does nothing. There also is an influx of illegals coming over our largely unguarded, 3,000 mile, border with Canada. I recall that most of the 9/11 terrorists entered the country from Canada. Trump ignores the northern border.
Despite all the loose talk about a "wall" on the southern border, one could reasonably conclude that Trump actually supports open borders. Ted: if you're listening, what's your take on these facts?
I recall that most of the 9/11 terrorists entered the country from Canada.
I too recall that. And I find it amazing that no one in the administration says a word about that. Why aren't we building a wall along that border?
“Where has Cory fallen down as a U.S. Senator for Trump?”
Funny, I thought Gardner was supposed to be a U.S. Senator for Colorado, a state that has soundly rejected Yammie-pie not once, but twice.
