There are a couple of nice maps showing Colorado wind & solar potential.
Interesting article, but old news in general. The Rocky Mountain Institute (www.rmi.org) predicted a few years ago that the country as a whole could get 75% of its energy from renewables by 2050. The remaining 25% would come from natural gas.
Unless I missed it in the quick skim I did, the article doesn't talk about impacted communities, like Craig, that could be hit hard by a rapid phase out of coal.
I felt really sorry that all the whale oil processing workers lost their jobs when coal and oil displaced them. I guess then you believe we should still be whaling, so Cape Ann, Mass. could thrive once again?
The wind blows incessantly in Craig and it has great solar potential. There are other industries that can and should be developed in Craig, and it is one of the responsibilities of government to help its citizens make transitions when society and its economy changes.
There is no sane reason to prop up a dying industry…particularly one that is so deadly to the planet and its inhabitants. Coal is a poisonous resource that should be left behind as soon as we can manage the transition. That POV is not an attack on anyone, particularly, hard working Americans with families to support. It is simply the truth.
We cannot save everyone from their future…but we can try. Let us rescind the trillion dollar tax cuts for billionaires and create new industries and training for displaced coal miners.
But I guess that's a waste of tax payers’ money…in some peoples minds.
Craig's not really doing so hot right now as it is, is it?
Might have something to do with American utilities taking 11.4 GW of coal fired power offline in 2018.
Maybe not.
Craig has been working to change its economy for a few years now. Under Obama, there was money for coal-centered communities to explore alternatives. Kentucky communities, and people from Moffat County explored alternatives, made recommendations, including emphasizing artisanal textiles, recreation, tourism.
Craig is looking at: cannabis industries
Phasing out coal and going to solar , wind, other renewables
Anschutz will build his long Transwest transmission line in 2020 near Craig, pulling wind electrons from Wyoming to California. There will be jobs making that line.

I am curious this morning if anyone still does not believe the President of the United States is prepared and poised to take control of the government and establish himself as a strong man dictator?
Well, there is a little thing called the Constitution in hi s way, Duke. And even the Federalist Society judges would stand in his way.
I believe he might take that step. He is surrounded by sycophants so they won't stop him. Only Congress, the courts, and the American people will stop him now. Perhaps his dangerous overreach needs to happen.
The "will he" and "won't he" speculation is interesting.
The silence of Republicans in the Senate and House is growing. After complaining, passing legislation, and even joining in suits to limit Obama's "executive orders," what will they do about a whole-hearted willingness to disregard Congress as a separate branch of the government by way of a "national emergency"?
Yep, if *rump in his 8 minute address tonight declares a "national emergency" to allow the use of troops to build the wall without funds specifically allocated by Congress, then, yes folks, we'll have a constitutional crisis on our hands.

Marcos's point is that you CANNOT win the Democratic primary without a broad, national network and lots of money. That is why the primary is starting right now.
His related point is that IA & NH are now insignificant as far as influencing the primary is concerned. One or another candidate may win each of CA, TX, VA, MA & NC, so the question becomes: Which candidate can consistently win second?
Actually, AOC is probably too young for 2020 but she should be just old enough in 2024.
AOC, at 29, can't run for president until 2024. The Constitution says you have to be 35. Of course, when she's 35, Dave Barnes will complain that she's too old.
Cowardly Republicans are hoping *rump does declare a national emergency so they can save face and end the shutdown.
Trumpty's big speech got great ratings, but very poor reviews.
Every mainstream cable channel carried it. Here's the big takeaway: He did not declare a state of emergency. No martial law, no constitutional crisis. He was playing chicken, and playing for attention.
He gave the same speech he'd been giving since 2015 – all crime in America starts in Mexico, all drugs, all rapists. They're all bad guys and we need the wall to keep them out. He stared at the teleprompter the whole time, did not look at the camera. Very weird affect, like a high school speech student trying out his speech in front of a mirror. No connection with his audience.
And the price has gone up. It's now $5.7 billion for a "steel barrier". And the wall will pay for itself. Ummmm. No. If he was hoping that the American public would see his speech and say, "Wow! I see the light! $5.7 billion, what a bargain – you've got my support, President Trump!."
Nope. Don't think so.
